I finally understand why I react more viscerally to a movie when I'm watching it with my wife/mom/sister/friend. Thanks for explaining this, I thought it was just random that I'm ambivalently emotional when watching a movie alone, but much more engaged when watching in the company of someone else.

And I balled when I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Some really great films being listed here that I could easily add to my list. A few people have mentioned The Wonder Years. This was a childhood favorite of mine I used to always watch with my father around dinner time. I kept seeing it show up non Netflix so started watching the series again recently and it is fantastic - just how I remember it really. I actually got choked up on a few episodes in the 3rd season. When his Math teacher dies, Jack says "goodbye" to his daughter who is grown up, and Winnie dumps Kevin and moves away. Rough few episodes.

Someone mentioned music having this same effect when sharing it with someone else and I wholeheartedly agree. I get a similarly intense emotion connection when showing someone new music as I do when sharing film.

It has a lot to do with projection - when I am with someone experiencing a movie or song for the first time I put myself in that mindset of interpreting it through their eyes as a virgin experience. It's almost more like you are experiencing the other party watching the movie more than you watching it with someone else.

"The Wonder Years" is an awesome show. I know of no other program that more successfully captures the spectrum of emotion experienced in navigating one's way through adolescence than "The Wonder Years". If you can make it through the entire series without ever getting choked up, there's got to be something wrong with you. I'm reminded of that that line from "Mad Men" where Don Draper describes nostalgia as "pain from an old wound" and that's how I feel when I watch this show. "The Wonder Years" just strikes such an emotional chord, it can be absolutely hilarious sometimes and utterly heartbreaking others.

It's interesting how the show seems to grow with you. When I watched it as a kid, I identified with Kevin and his friends. As an adult, you can understand why Jack came home from work so grumpy. It's interesting to revisit the show as your perspective in life changes. To anyone reading this who hasn't already seen it, I definitely recommend checking it out. I give it a solid 10/10 rating.

Heat is one of my favorite films.

When I'm in a fun mood, I pop Cannonball Run in. Plenty of one liners and gags, I always seem to spot something I hadn't seen or heard in the movie before.

I think it's fair to say that I've never watched a show quite like this, and I don't think we'll ever see something quite like it again. The way that this show approached its subject matter - not shying away from what makes us human - elevates it into the highest echelon of television for me. The stories that were explored - love, war, fear, hate, religion, selflessness - it's something that I think even heavy hitters such as Game of Thrones, The Wire, Breaking Bad, etc. cannot achieve. Its also the ultimate you're feeling shit series, "but look at these people carry on even succeed and make a go of it anyway"
