Rio vs Cartagena
So I'm planning my first trip out of the country on August 27 thru September 3. Can't decide between the two cities. Going right after the olympics. I know conversational Spanish. And will take some Portuguese classes before I go. If I pick rio, I will be staying at impanema inn. Will be taking about 1500 us for spending money(no pros lol). Which do you think I will have the best time at? Rio has a lot of landmarks I know of and activities. About me black male 30 muscular build, with game. All feedback will be appreciated. Especially on Cartagena, don't know that much about. Thanks!

RE: Rio vs Cartagena
I went to Cartagena last year and I’m going to Rio next month.

Cartagena is like a Spanish speaking New Orleans. Touristy and compact. Nice for 2 or 3 days to tick off your bucket list.

Rio seems to offer more diversity. Two other things that make Rio very appealing right now is the favorable exchange rate and temporary visa waiver for the summer.

I hope this helps.

Go to Rio. Cartagena is only good for prostitutes and it gets very boring after 2 days.

I was in both within the last 3 months. I concur with the posters above. Rio is the best choice. Though it's a pretty short trip, it will be good if you study some Portuguese, it pays off big time. If you're conversational Spanish already, you'll pick it up fast.

I've been to both. Cartagena is nice, don't get me wrong, but you can exhaust it in two days. Rio has a lot to offer, especially Copacabana and Ipanema. Be warned, though, that Brazil is surprisingly expensive.

I would say rio. In addition to rio being more interesting, i think girls there are less racist and more likely to be intrigued by dating a black dude.

Good looks for the info, I was already leaning toward rio anyway. Anyone know any places or hot spots in or around impanema?

Re Rio keep in mind that's 6 days after the Olympics there ends. That could be a good time to go to take advantage of the improvement made for the Games. Or you could be right in the middle of some serious unrest given the already bad economy there which will only be exacerbated with the Olympics.

I agree with the posts. Cartagena is nice to visit, but I went there with a local Colombian woman from Barraquilla (which I don't recommended going to unless it's to their carnival). Rio has options for game, but for the beaches, I prefer Buzios or Cado Frio. They are 1-1.5 hours from Rio and safer too.
