For some reason when I have a steak knife and fork I always end up in a position where I'm using my main hand to eat with the fork, but my offhand is holding the knife with my forearm resting on the table such that the knife is pointed blade outwards to defend the food.

I do it without thinking about it, yet I've never actually had to stab someone trying to steal food off my plate, so it's a bit of a curiosity.

I never used fork nor knife when eating before coming to France (We would use spoons only, or have the mother cut meat/fish for us, since we eat in Senegal in the same huge plate). It was not really easy at first.

I use my right hand to eat with the fork for religious reason (eat with the right hand). But it's not really a problem since I am pretty proficient with my left (ambidextrous in writing)

I usually don't care about this, until I see Anglo people eat rice dishes, or even freakin' fried eggs with a knife and fork. Why??? Use a spoon!

And one other thing in the correct way to use chopsticks: pick up your damn bowl. Don't leave it on the table, then hunch over trying to pick up a grain of rice or a strand of noodle like an idiot.

This also reminds me of another observation of mine: the Brits have amazingly complicated table manners for a people with such shitty foods. What's their best contribution to world cuisines? Fish n chips?





I reckon they come up with so much crap to distract people from their horrible foods. When you are getting scolded for not holding the bloody fork right, or for your elbow brushing the table, you may not notice that you're eating meat and two vegs yet fucking again for 10 nights in a row!

I think I can give a pretty qualified answer given that I'm from the UK, South Asian and very familiar with East Asian food and cultures.

Indian food isn't meant to be eaten with a knife and fork - how the fuck do you eat this with a knife and fork? The food is designed so that you break the flat bread and use it to scoop up food.



For meat dishes the meat is already cut into chunks.



If you have rice dishes, you use a spoon or fork - some south Indians eat rice with their hands. In India restaurants give you a spoon and fork.

The rice eaten with chopsticks tends to be "sticky" rice - it sticks together and it's easier to pick up with chopsticks. It would be very hard to eat long grain rice with chopsticks. Also, in a lot of rice or noodle dishes the protein is already cut into smaller pieces.

As for knives and forks, the knife is meant to held in the right hand, and the fork in the left. I went to an etiquette class with a lot of Americans who come from pretty well backgrounds, and a surprising amount of them didn't know how to use a knife and fork properly.

A lot of Americans don't even use a knife to eat to eat certain dishes. I remember an American relative cooking breakfast for me and only handing me a fork.
