Agree about black metal, but from what I can tell is was outside of the US primarily, but has pockets of fans in the states. I saw the rise of it, with my first Napalm Death show in 1990. I was speaking more in terms of mainstream metal, particularly Limp Bisquick, Lincoln Park and the douchy rap metal acts from the mid-late 90's. Metal bands and metal artists wanted mainstream appeal, so they blended with alternative sounds/genres, and the result was pure shit. Technical playing became passe and frowned upon, as limp-wristed 90's beta artistry became the norm. White boy melody replaced technical chops and precision. Metallica is the best example of this. You were a dork if you had a guitar with a Floyd Rose. The 90's were largely like an episode of Friends, and music suffered as a result. In my opinion the beta-ization of men in the 90's was 100x worse than anything that ever happened in the 70's. I think metal has settled into a nice spot, not as big as it once was, but full of great new music that pays homage to the core 60's-70s-80s sounds.

Today this is what I think of when I think "metalhead":

Bro, do you even listen to metal? You named Manson and Cradle of Filth as metal bands that metalheads listen to. What sort of metalheads do you hang out with?

Unless you're 16 and in high school, I am seriously wondering where you got the idea that we all hang out, slit our wrists and shit. Emo was about 10 years ago. Even my emo sister dropped that shit.

Most metalheads I know are older, hold professional positions (or play full-time) and don't walk around in parachute pants, cut their wrists or do any of that teenage bullshit you just tried to falsely attribute to our music.

agree about Pantera, I was going to mention them in my post. Even though they hit their heights in the early 90's, they came up in the 80's, and their best records are very early 90's. Sepultura is another example just like Pantera. Tool is great, and probably the best mainstream example in your list(who also came up in the 80's). The others are more underground/diehard groups. My point of reference is mainstream, when metal was as big or bigger than any other type of popular mainstream music, like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, radio bullshit, etc. Its hard for people to comprehend that, if you didnt grow up in it. I am comparing this to when Ozzy, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Judas Priest, AC/DC, etc were bigger in the 80's than most mainstream musical acts today. That was really the heyday of metal. King Diamond was bigger than most pop groups you hear today. While there was still great metal music in the 90's, it was much more underground, and lost the mainstream appeal.

^ I was 1 years old in 1990, so I didn't grow up in the heyday of metal, but I think metal has undergone a few renaissances since early 2000. My frame of reference is skewed because I grew up in a household where mom and dad would listen to hiphop and R'n' b and other mainstream stuff.



But on the flipside, I've seen many bands come and go. What's great about metal is that sub-genres can blossom overnight and be gone in 2-3 years. Remember metalcore? That evolved into Deathcore then Djent and now just about every metal band has decided to get their chops up and become technical.

I think metal still has a lot of reach. For instance, my mother knows who Tosin Abasi is. Animals as Leaders isn't even a big band, but when the music's good people who would otherwise not be interested in it will find it.

Scenesters are usually in high school or college and hang out with other scenesters.

I rarely meet adult scenesters. They're usually into punk, live in Brooklyn and have huge trust funds so they can afford to buy"legit" punk gear and pretend to be poor all the time. Think crusties.

If you go to a metal concert, of course, people are wearing all black and band shirts. I don't do that, but people will wear band shirts to concerts because where the fuck else can you wear a band shirt and not look like a high schooler? Honestly, if you see a guy wearing parachute pants in 2016, he is probably:

A) Redneck/trailer park kid
B) Jugallo
C) Retarded

The hard rock of the 1980's was pussy music. Those guys made music and got lots and lots of pussy. I was a teen in the 1980's. Lots of girls wanted to get backstage with Motley Crue, Poison, and Guns and Roses. I don't think this is what you meant by "pussy music" though.

It changed when grunge took over. While hard rock was about "girls, girls, girls," grunge sang about child abuse and social justice baloney. It changed when social justice warriors realized they could get their message out with hard rock. You had groups like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. The icon of grunge committed suicide at the height of his career. Most of the 1980's hard rock icons are still alive, in spite of lots of self-destructive behavior.

I also think it changed when Clinton become President. The hard rock of the 1980's was a reaction to the conservatism of Reagan and Bush. When Clinton became President, there was no conservatism to rebel against. It was also in 1992 that MTV started to cover politics with their "Choose or Lose" baloney. They invited Clinton to talk to 18-24 year-olds, and he did.

Remember in the early 1990's, MTV still took the M seriously. It was a music channel. MTV pushed the hard rock bands of the 1980's big time. They pushed grunge big time as well.

I suspect MTV could be as responsible for the rise of grunge as much as anything. Interestingly enough, the hard rock of the 1980's has actually stayed around longer than the rock of the 1990's.

Pantera is my workout band, I play all their albums back to back when I'm working out and nothing gets me more hyped and jacked and ready to pump! Yeah Pantera came up in the 80s, but I feel like they didn't really sound like a cohesive band until 1990, and Cowboys From Hell. The glam rock shit from the 80s might as well be a totally different band. I think their 4 albums from the 90s are all pretty much classic though.

KISS was huge too and really brought a lot of the showmanship and made their concerts an over the top spectacle. Van Halen was huge and kind of a crossover pop/metal hybrid. Both legendary pussy magnet bands.
I know Dimebag Darrell was a huge KISS & Van Halen fan too, reminds me of this tragic story.

But, It's what all the mainstream 80s Hair Metal guys were doing at the time, and that's what many bands thought they had to do to get noticed until the entire genre changed around 1990 and everyone changed their look and sound up. Sure metal was bigger in the 80s, but I think the 80s is actually when metal became pussy and the 90s snapped it out of it. The 80s Metal had become too goth, and faggy and the men were all wearing skin tight leather and latex and shit and looking more effeminate than the women. Just like how Nirvana brought in the grunge era and alternative rock style, the metal genre advanced the most in the 90s with guys like Pantera I think. Maybe it wasn't as big and mainstream, but that was the appeal of it that made it feel more authentic and rebellious.

Glam rock type stuff (Motley Crue, Ratt, etc) is hard rock, not metal.

The 1980s saw metal (actual metal) explode, from NWOBHM & other bands with a similar sound. The obvious ones were Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon, etc but there is no shortage of high quality releases, many relatively unknown, during that time period. Angel Witch, Mercyful Fate and Venom laid the ground work for Satanic/occult themes. Venom with their focus on abrasive and extreme music laid the ground work for basically all extreme metal that came afterwards. By the time we are at 1983-1984, speed/thrash metal is still finding its feet, and Venom-worshipping bands like Bathory and Hellhammer are putting out what later become formative influences for 90s black metal. Bands like Death, Possessed and Insanity by 1985 are pushing thrash to new extremes, sparking the first wave of death metal. Thrash metal and power metal (the balls-to-the-wall riff-fest kind like Savage Grace or Liege Lord, not the faggy keyboard sings about fairies crap) dominate from ~83-89 before death and black metal start to rear their now fully-developed heads.

In other words, a lot of huge things happened in the 80s, classic names established themselves, sub-genres were forged, and none of it had anything to do with glam rock, Kiss or Van Halen.

Then while grunge takes off as the new popular 'hard rock' the metal underground explodes with all sorts of death and black metal styles. I don't agree that Pantera is a result of any of this, nor did they influence metal's direction. You're right, I agree with all that. I'll stand with your analysis! I'm really just showing my bias for the 90s music since that's what I grew up on. When I was younger I think I kind of looked down on the 80s music as being old and faggy, but I'd probably appreciate it a lot more now. So when do you think heavy metal became pussified?

I think the mainstream face of it got pussified, sure, and the same can be said about punk too. The rise of scenesters mainly, once it fell victim to brainless trends that drop off the face of the earth a few years later, it attracts a type of 'fan' that is completely a different beast to the standard metalhead. I'm not sure how much social media is involved, but it's certainly a big part of how these scenes spread like wildfire and a million imitation bands cropped up. Buying mp3 downloads from myspace or wherever is a lot less investment than tape trading, writing to an underground label for a catalogue, scouring the 'We'd like to thank' sections of CDs for new bands to check out, etc.

Many metal musicians suffer from depression, alcoholism, violence, inferiority complex, anger, whining, bi-polar syndrome, ADD, and about every mental illness you can think of. From the first note that rang out in the song 'Black Sabbath', until the present day, metal musicians have done everything they can to portray themselves as bad-asses, when the truth is that they are nothing more than a bunch of little boys and girls who hide behind their guitars.

Not to mention the simplicity of their music. They think they are so fuckin' amazing because they can shred. I would challenge any of these musicians, however, to be disciplined enough to sit down and play a violin concerto, piano sonata, Caprice, Nocturne, or sit in on a jazz trio. Then they would know what it's really like to overcome their pussiness and act like real men or women.

The sad thing is that metal - all metal of any kind - is so steeped in the industry, the commercialism, the image, and the personification of 'tough' (whatever the fuck they think that is), that they have forgotten that it's about the music. And don't think for one minute that it's never been mainstream. It's always been mainstream - just marketed differently to appeal to a different crowd. For every band out there that is actually musically credible (i.e., Dream Theater), you've got a bunch of screaming, lazy, and boring musicians and songwriters who actually demonstrate little to no imagination, creativity, or innovation in their music.

It happened around the time when the lyrics became unintelligible and guys started listing off bands they listened to to show others how tough they are instead of listing things they have achieved or hope to achieve.

Also, if you look up the lyrics in most songs with the screamo vocals, they are usually pathetic whiney nonsense about how there is no point to anything and how the person singing can't get anything they want, nothing goes their way in life, all the girls they obsess over bang other men while ignoring them, and all of these things are making them want to commit suicide like 2 of the other kids from their nondenominational Wednesday evening youth group already tried to do.

Compare that to a band like Disturbed or System of a Down which does not have the whiney clear vocals contrasting with the unintelligible screamo vocals being belted out by some emaciated metrosexual with ear gauges and you'll notice a difference in the lyrical content and themes. Going even further back in time, you can also compare a music video like Knives and Pens by Black Veil Brides (skinny emo kid aesthetic that tries to throw in every taboo at once for shock value but just winds up looking sloppy and needy to its already desensitized viewers, whiney vocals, embarrassingly sad lyrics probably about some problem that could be at least partially solved by being assertive and learning to say no) with a music video from an old metal band like Rock You Like a Hurricane by the Scorpions. Very different feeling you get from both of these.










The tragedy is that the instrumental skills of the musicians involved have probably actually gotten more impressive than they were in the old days but most of them are such pathetic sissies that I wish that they would hide behind a curtain or something and not have any vocals at all. Just do the instrumentals only and have a couple of contemporary dancers in period costume roll around on the floor in front of the curtain. Even that would be better.

As a humorous example, watch both of the following videos all the way through and ask yourself which one makes you feel more masculine, hopeful, pumped, ambitious, ready to go out and do stuff, etc. Which one makes you feel more like a man and more like you want to go out and do something significant when you listen to it?:









It's funny because the obvious answer is Spongebob even though his song is explicitly about rejecting adulthood and remaining a child indefinitely. The big difference is that the Suicide Silence guys are just trying to attention seek and make others notice them, therefor making their happiness and success entirely dependent on the charity and empathy of others (like helpless pre-pubescent children) whereas Spongebob is basically saying that he is going to do his thing, captain his own ship, and lead the way regardless of what anyone else outside of his tribe, where he is treated with respect and plays a needed role, thinks of him (like a damn man). In a song about being a child, Spongebob displays more admirable masculine traits than all of those tattooed metalheads combined who are, in their own pathetic way (if you look up the lyrics - they are embarrassing), are telling others to do what Spongebob is actually doing. Aesthetically and stylistically, Spongebob's performance also gets me more pumped whereas Suicide Silence's performance just makes me want to give up on everything because we're all completely alone, life is utterly hopeless, it's all ultimately for nothing, and nobody within or outside of the cosmos will ever care.


TLDR: When did heavy metal become pussy music? - Around 2005. Maybe earlier depending on when Hot Topic became big in your locality and whenever people started pretending to be satanists to try and intimidate people instead of getting stronger to do so. Seriously, read the last 2 paragraphs and compare the two videos. I could not make the point better.

In my view, it is unwise to get into a style of music (or almost anything else) only because girls claim to be into it. I am including Christian metal chicks in that statement because I grew up with Christian metal too and actually went to youth group every Wednesday evening at a church where some of the kids who had formed a Christian metal screamo band of their own would perform on a stage that the church had set up. As you might guess, the lyrics were unintelligible but it was probably stuff about Jesus or something. All of the kids at that youth group were into screamo and Christian metal. I watched one kid who had sat in the desk next to mine in biology class a year or two prior get baptized there. Back when we were in biology class together, he had told me he was a theistic Satanist.

Anyway, Christian metal chicks are as raunchy as any other metal chicks, the only difference being that they are also trying to appear marriageable at the same time by feigning remorse for their past sexual promiscuity and/or the sex that they are now engaging in with you because they are having a moment of weakness and (only temporarily) reverting back to the sinful ways of their tortured past. That's what she will tell the dope who marries them later when he comes home from work to grab something he forgot only to catch her screwing another man in their bed who is the real biological father of the kid he has been raising for the past 5 years and whom he will have to pay child support for in the ensuing divorce.

I have personally witnessed Christian metal girls from my church youth group in high school fucking in a megachurch that we went to during a trip where a bunch of youth groups from around the state met up and spent the night (they were not even trying to hide it). And as for our home church, the word was that every girl at that church had done it in the church itself or in the woods outside during youth group.

It also seemed that most of them had some sob story about getting molested by a stepdad, uncle, or some other trusted male adult. It just doesn't seem statistically possible that 80% of all the girls I ever knew in high school were molested so I suspect that most if not all of them were making it up as part of a pity thing to get the sympathy and attention from the devoted beta male followers of nondenominational Cuckianity (not to be confused with old school Christianity) while getting bent over the pews by whoever just happened to be there at the right time. I even had a girl try to get sexual with me inside of that same megachurch and during the same trip. It may sound great but bear in mind that these chicks were damaged individuals so it was not as awesome as you might think. And, of course, it was America so most of them were also fat.

Above average girls were weird.
