Ironically most "metalheads" I see today who listen to the likes of Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, and 'extreme metal' in general tend to fall into the camp of nihilistic, wrist slitting, emos.

I'm sure not all metal today has this 'vibe' (I myself wouldn't know because I listen mainly to rock and metal from the 80s and before - like Iron Maiden, Priest, Megadeath, Dokken, Skid Row and others).

Metal may have always had something of an "outcast" chic, but in the past I think metal was associated with more of an outlaw, rebel aesthetic.

While today it's idea of "rebellion" has been watered down into the same camp as the typical emo/goth/social outcast subcultures; something for a bunch of nihilistic, suburban, virginal, millenials to "identify" with in high school just for the sake of negative attention.

Any idea why this is? My only thoughts are that it dates back to the "grunge" genre of the 90s and the entire "alternative rock" schtick which followed, which likely had a big influence on metal as well. The lyrics in a lot of extreme metal are of the same garden variety content as the grunge/pop punk schmaltz too - except we just have some guy screaming or growling about how much he hates himself because his girlfriend dumped him instead of singing about it in a high pitched nasally voice.

I've noticed this as well, punch of emotional pussies with haircuts designed for tumblr.

I'm considered a millennial at 29 but me and some of the other metalheads were the most rowdy, drunk, violent and ignorant motherfuckers at my high school.

I feel like younger millenials need to be considered a new generation they suck so terribly. It's cool less competition but fuck em.

There are only 3 things a metalhead should feel in front of others: anger, hate, and the effects of alcohol and drugs.

While self-loathing can be the topic of many metal songs, most are about pride, overcoming overwhelming odds, and general badassery.

I think you're thinking of "nu-metal" and its offshoots, as demonstrated by your connecting it to grunge and alt-rock. While certainly there are subgenres that cater to that sort of introspective pity, the vast majority does not have the same spirit.

Too much compartmentalization in metal to come to that conclusion.

The crabcore horseshit with the fairies with the comb-over hair and ultra deep V-necks and autotune vocals is for little kids. Of course it's pussy music. the audience is 15 year old scene girls who cut their wrists horizontally.

On the other end of the spectrum you have hardcore which is full of machismo and bro douchebags who drink, do drugs, and fuck scene bitches. The varsity footbal team of heavy music. Nothing pussy about that.

Heavy metal from the 80's dressed like queens sure - most people in the 80's dressed gay as fuck. That said, 80's metal bands were the epitome of Alpha Male. Not giving a fuck, making tons of money, partying and doing whatever they wanted, and fucking tons of girls all the time. I'm not sure if we'll ever see a time for metal like we saw in the 80's.

1. 10:1 Male to female ratio at any gig
2. Basement dwellers who spent more time listening to Sabbath than gaming girls.

There is lots of garbage music that is fast and "heavy" but is not heavy metal. Unfortunately most people cannot see the difference.
