There's serious talk now of requiring visas for Americans/Canadians:

Only Britain and Ireland have opt-outs from the 28-nation EU's common visa policy and the European Commission must decide by April 12 whether to demand visas from countries who have similar requirements in place for one or more EU state.

Washington and Ottawa both demand entry visas from Romanians and Bulgarians, whose states joined the EU in 2007. The United States also excludes Croatians, Cypriots and Poles from a visa waiver scheme offered to other EU citizens.

"A political debate and decision is obviously needed on such an important issue. But there is a real risk that the EU would move towards visas for the two (Americans and Canadians)," an EU source said.

Whether such a step was practical, however, was in question given that it would seriously undermine the EU's vast and lucrative tourist industry. The U.S. and Canadian missions to Brussels were not immediately available for comment.

The discussion, prompted by U.S. and Canadian refusals to waive their visa requirements for holders of some EU member states' passports, will take place on Tuesday, just over a week before U.S. President Barack Obama arrives in Europe on a visit that will include trade talks.

Trade negotiations between Brussels and Washington are at a crucial point since both sides believe their transatlantic agreement, known as TTIP, stands a better chance of passing before Obama leaves the White House in January.

Obama is due to visit Britain before meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a trade fair in Hanover on April 24.

"There are major question marks over TTIP, no one could now say exactly how it'll go in the end. We'll see if we can get Obama in Hanover to commit to more of what we want," said one European Parliament member tracking TTIP.

Every time the EU makes statements like these, they always back down like the cowards they are eventually.

Back around 2004 when the USA introduced fingerprinting for all visitors, the EU said they would do the same for Americans visiting Europe....nothing ever came of it.
12 years later all Europeans visiting the USA are still fingerprinted, Americans visiting Europe are not.

Russia, China, and some other "rogue" nations are able to make harsh threats to the US and follow through.

The EU however, has never followed through on a threat to the USA and probably never will.

Mercenary is spot on - it is embarassing and pathetic, but nothing will happen. Most European politicians wouldn't dare to make life harder for Americans, because many of them are simply servants of the US government/industry elite, in various ways.

If they don't want to be under our control then maybe they should stop accepting our money and stop asking for our protection.

The E.U. knows they are weak, and getting weaker. They have zero leverage and are negotiating from a position of weakness. Of course they won't get favorable deals.

It's not really that much of an imposition acquiring an ESTA before travelling to the States.

It's the price one pays for allowing millions of potential Jihadists to be running around Europe with EU passports.

The Americans know the truth and so do we, begrudgingly. It's why we accept it and never "retaliate" with equal measures.

The ironic thing about this is that the EU countries without visa-free access are newer members from the East - Poland, Romania - which aren't accepting the migrants while the visa-free Western European countries are bringing in millions of migrants and already have given passports to known terrorists.

This is how backwards the western world is these days. It's not just Europe either.

Even the U.S. seems to restrict decent law abiding immigrants and foreign visitors the most and holds them a higher standard whereas if you can polevault over a fence, hide behind a truck's paneling, or tunnel your way in you're all good and a protected class.

To be practical with mass radicalized Islamist migration both in EU and lesser extent USA, Canada and Mexico likely the only system that would work is a live Biometric System with fingerprints and Voice and Facial recognition even DNA and if you are willing to submit your biometrics and DNA to a Trusted Travellers program for background checking and verification then no Visas - otherwise complete suspicious persons treatment with detailed FBI, DHS and Interpol database checks before allowed entry.

When Hungary entered the EU, tens of thousands of welfare mooching Gypsy riff raff immediately flooded Canada, that's why they imposed restrictions on certain countries. The EU can go fuck itself.

Who says they don't want to? Of course they benefit from this, otherwise it wouldn't happen in the first place. Ask the common people and most will probably state they wouldn't need either from the States; but America is and always has been popular with Western Europeans since the end of WW2, so on the other hand the very same people don't mind the additional hassle they have to go through when visiting the US. It's a "vicious circle" that's not going to be broken up anytime soon.

I'm not seeing this as a big deal.

No one in the EU is going to sacrifice their relations with the USA and Canada to stick up for Romania and Bulgaria. Even if they impose some bullshit visa, so what? It's the fee that counts. I suspect it would be "de minimis."
