The metal crowd, despite their apparent angst, were always the most respectful of my venue, staff & patronage. I've never hear as many "please & thank you's". Despite how much I hate their music, as a businessman I welcome them with open arms.

I'm a stealth metal head, you could say.

I could name a laundry list of names, but I don't think that's really necessary. But I've been listening to metal for over 10 years now. Probably my favorite genre.

Guys at metal shows are usually quite friendly.

I've been to probably 100+ metal shows (used to work for a radio station) and never gotten "beaten" or anything. I've had dudes truck me, knock me down, help me up and later became friends with those same guys.

The metal scene is a lot like the RVF in that people say what ever the fuck they want and can be pretty non-pc but they're usually fundamentally cool people once you get to know them.

I'm confident I could walk into any metal show and walk out with at least 1-2 new friends. Contrast that with the club scene or the rap scene and it's just another planet.

I do think aggression is a part of the appeal but metalheads probably have a lot more in common with stoners than they do with, say, extreme sports fanatics or anything. Whenever I've met any "famous" metal musicians they're down to earth and the sort of people who hang out with their fans and will swap guitar tips and all sorts of things with you.


They're very easy going people.

Metal is pretty "open" to women. the skill cap that comes with metal music is so high that if a girl can play bass, guitar or drums at that level that people don't really have an issue with it. People (SJWs) want metal to be this misogynistic genre, but it really isn't.

I've seen girls in the pit and guys are pretty conscious of them and don't beat them down or anything.

Metal is probably one of the last genres around where there is still a strong sense of community. SJWs can't stand communities like that.

Been listening to punk, metal, and hardcore for 16 years now and I love the music. Ballsy, fast, energetic, and among the few music styles left with testosterone.

Their respective scenes are incubators for some pretty retarded ideas, but the music is awesome.

I think there's also a culture at metal shows that other genres don't have, and there's generally speaking, a more talented performer than other genres.

I like all types of music, but metal is by far the genre where I feel that most performers are exceptionally talented (Animals as Leaders, Mastodon, etc)

It has been said that if you appreciate Metal, you're most likely going to be more intelligent.
Which stands to reason as I'll get to in a moment, but first let me say that I don't attend concerts, so the following is about the music only.

In order to appreciate good Metal, you'll have to have an appreciation of rhythm, tempo & melody.
Any old fool can throw together a dub-step type song with a computer or some trite remix DJ shite.

But to compose a meaningful Metal song? That takes actual talent for both song composition & musicianship.
Which brings me to aspects of Metal which allow it to surpass all other forms of music (save orchestral music - which Metal is partly derived from).

- The aforementioned rhythm, tempo & melody. That most pop-music songs only last three minutes & are so derivative of each other is rather laughable.

- With an average time-frame of five or six minutes (if not ten minutes) for a Metal song, you'd better have a song that has distinct changes in rhythm, tempo & melody.
- Then once again, the length of Metal songs being on average of five or six minutes is to the genres credit. No easily nibbled bits with Metal. You're going to have to chew on that bastard instead.
- Not for Metal the same 3/4, 4/4 beat. Time signatures in Metal can range across - 3/8, 7/8, 5/8, 7/16, 5/4, 3/4, 6/4, 12/8, 5/16, 15/8, 9/8, 11/8, 6/16.
- The fact that a pop song may have only three 'streams' of music at a time (vocals, lead instrument & back beat), whereas a good metal song can easily have five or six (vocals, two lead guitars, bass guitar, double bass drumming & standard drumming).
- Unlike most pop-music, the content of Metal songs is not trivial shite either. War, politics, corruption, religion, social issues, all add gravitas to Metal music.
- Then finally, the actual & legit musicianship. See Tool, Mastodon & Gojira to name just a few.

Metal in general is a respectful culture as far as people's demeanor goes and live show behavior. As I said earlier, I believe this has a lot to do with the fact that the music is the outlet and expression. Someone who listens to metal is able to vent frustration, anger, stress, and all other negative weight via the music.

When I'm angry I listen to loud ass, heavy, angry music and I feel better. The activity that goes on in my brain when listening to it gives me a cathartic release. I've never been a violent person, a drug user, or an overly aggressive asshole because this music I've listened too since I was a kid has kept me on the level.

That being said, hardcore and punk can be very different. Hardcore especially. For music that talks up respect, morals, brotherhood, and values, the modern crop that are into hardcore is full of a lot of scumbags. They fight for the sake of fighting, gang up on kids who are outsiders, trash venues and get them shut down, and generally loaded with a lot of shitty people. Machismo in modern hardcore is a problem.

With other types of music you are more likely to get a lukewarm "Eh it's okay" reaction while with metal people will immediately go either hot or cold when you play them a song.

Metal isn't mainstream anymore because in today's music/arts/culture scene it's seen as uncool and cheesy to express emotion and an artistic vision in a direct way; instead it has to be expressed in subtle and runabout matter. Any sort of honest expression of the artist's feelings has to be covered up with layers of irony and self-deprecation. You can see this with a lot of the hipster indie rock that is popular these days. The hipsters themselves are actually a perfect representation of this sort of music only in human form - always trying to appear to be too cool for school and trying to appear above it all cause it's vulgar to actually appear to care or show passion for anything. Metal is the opposite of all that - it's bombastic and expresses emotion straightforwardly in naked form without coating it in irony whether the emotion be aggression in a blazing trash/death metal song or sorrow and melancholy in a ballad. I've always loved all of that about metal but I appreciate it even more in today's climate since today's culture is very much against any sort of over the top expression of an ego in any form (look at the hate Donald Trump gets) and expects people to play nice.

Whilst i wholeheartedly agree, there are exceptions to the rule.

Guys like dallas green and thomas oliver make pretty honest music, i don't mind some indie folk or rock once in a while, there's a time and a place for everything.

But i agree, there's nothing quite as powerful as metal and everything leading up to the genre:blues, blues rock, rock n roll etc

As a metal head, the first thing that comes to my mind, by reading your post is:
-Need to separate the heavy metal waters.

From what I understand your post is more directed to what I would call a new wave of heavy metal, largely influenced by more "extreme" bands and American thrash metal "revivalism": the metalcore bands, and bands like tool, mastodon, lamb of god, etc (that have a sound that I do not appreciate).
As a heavy metal purist, I would not call these bands "Heavy Metal" or "Metal", even though their sound is similar, but this is me being a purist and elitist. Also, even though the crowd seems similar, from my experience it is quite different. It is much younger and more influenced by the old school thrasher stories:

Anyways, talking about "old-school" heavy metal and bands such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Saxon, Manowar, Manilla Road, Gamma Ray, Sepultura, Accept, Death, CAGE, Grave Digger, Iced Earth, Immortal, Sabaton, Savatage, Agent Steel, Slayer, WASP, etc...
First of the musicianship is, in my opinion top class.
The pounding of the drums and bass, the dual (and sometimes triple) guitar attacks and high pitched vocals just make my ass hair stand up and clap. The solos, the leads, the riffs, the pauses, the intensity, the speed, the lyrics... I feel it's magical. This kind of stuff makes arenas stand up and scream!
The lyrics (when you understand them) talk about different subjects: God, death, Satan, rebirth, zombies, vikings, blood, gore, metals and different hard materials, fire, occult, pirates, heroes, tyrants, oppression, fighting for what you believe in, space, drugs, beer, violence, traveling, engines, motorcycles, cars, planes, boats, guitars, fear, courage, history, mythology, vengeance, etc.

All of this stuff appeals to my (inner nerd and) need for a "testosterone" fix in this homosexualized society.
Have you ever noticed how rock music has become gayer, softer, and more "colorful"? What kind of bands do you have today that you can compare to the heyday of Rolling Stones, Doors, Motorhead, etc? I not only mean musically, but also in attitude.
Instead of Mick Jagger throwing TV's out of the hotel room and fucking shit up, we have hipsterized, slim fit rock.

As I see, gay people don't need their "testosterone" fix, and have stood away from heavymetal (even though there are lot's of gay people in metal - Rob Halford for example). This leaves Heavy metal as the last bastion of masculinity. So far it has been impenetrable from gay agenda, SJWs and typical leftism. We have plenty of good old material to listen to, and we like to search for new bands, so we are not fed music via radio/MTV. Metal fans are not prone to their favorite band jumping ship in the name of social justice and will punish the bands by not buying their stuff and not going to their concerts.

When I go to a concert, I don't go there for the mosh pit, i go to see my favorite bands play their songs, sing with them, do air guitar, bang my head, raise my fist, drink beers with my friends and have a fucking good time. No more, no less.


So, to sum it up:
-Natural Testosterone boost (I lift more, and run faster and longer when i'm listening to metal)
-Cool list of covered topics (lyricaly and naturally the music follows - There's no happy music about death)
-Good musicianship
-Brotherhood

I agree and I don't think it is being a purist. It's the same as calling Kanye and Drake hip-hop based on the fact they rap, but they're not from the same background and they're not part of what most call hip hop. I guess the same could be extended to Lil Wayne and others.

I listened to some of the bands mentioned on first page and Metalcore and I don't see and feel metal. Metalcore apparantly is an evolution of hardcore punk and punk and metal are two very different scenes. Punk found it's spiritual successor in Grunge. Metal is fundamentally value positive and optimist even with the dark lyrics, Punk is fundamentally value relativist and pessimist.

It's the same with Nu-Metal and it's worst proponents where you think if they stop their screamo and just sing normally and if they take away the electric guitars, you essentially just have some angsty guys singing ballads.

I mostly listen to various folk metal group at the moment and there is a lot innovation there, much more in tune with metal roots.

I'm more devil's advocate than an opposing force at the moment, I feel that we need to explore the effects metal(aggressive rhymic music of all types) has on our psyche. As GS states above, and I welcome his thoughts on why he believes this a positive, this music is cathartic.

See, I've cone to define masculinity as a calculated projection of energy. I've been using myself as guinea pig the past two months and find with metal in my musical diet I'm burning through my passion connecting with the music(the relativity factor is a nice high) and I'm rather listless the rest of the time. The energy has been expended without my having anything to show for it, and Ive been wondering if in these moods is where the victim complex was born. Still have my past to fuel my anger and no angry energy left to make things happen; most don't trust themselves with their negative emotions and for me they're critical to my work. I wonder if the great men of the past valued peace not for its own sake, instead with the knowledge they'd have a full stock of vital energy when it came time to lay down the law.

Since I discovered music I've stuck with metal only branching out recently as I began to question it's influence. Started the greater half of a decade ago with Venom, descended into Burzum & Electric Wizard territory. From there Nokturnal Mortum, Graveland, Absurd.. far from the SJW whining that dominates most of the metal market. And that it does, watch any interview of a metal musician & most of them will virtue signal as much as they can get away with. I don't know show culture which may well be different, metalhead online however are only different from hipsters in that they prioritize shock value.

If you feel it would benefit your project I'd be glad to offer my voice to the project. More than being a dissenting opinion I've a background with metal forums, a history of compulsively researching bands(to avoid SJW,) and an association with a prominent BM musician whose since shunned the genre. I was in deep with this musician's fans and seen where people you'd expect to be radical anti-SJW were only for show. I've also iindependently studied the various genre's origins/influences and the history(suitability?) of rhymic music for the Western man. Just don't pin me as an anti-metal preacher, I haven't sold my collection yet.

The fact that a band like Nokturnal Mortum with their subject matter can be one of the most popular active black metal bands simply could not happen in an environment that SJWs could also exist in. The general attitude of the scene towards Nazism/white nationalism/supremacy in lyrics & imagery is to ignore it and focus on the music.

As for the discussion above re elitism in metal (eg, metalheads typically having love/hate responses to songs with little in between; metalcore not being metal, etc), I think elitism is just inherent in metal, ever since it grew an extreme underground scene.

I gotta be honest, I used to be into way more intense music, such as metal, but that was when I was a teenager. I had a lot of rage and emotion. Now I'm more mellow. The most hardcore stuff I might listen to is techno (and I don't mean it as an umbrella term like 'edm' - it's a subgenre of its own).
Also, pardon my ignorance, but aren't mosh pits more common in punk rock rather than metal concerts?
