I've a thing for black chicks and hence, always wanted to visit Africa.

My objectives: get a tan, get drunk and fuck. Nothing too fancy, I reckon.

I only have about a week and Dakar seems to be the best option for that endeavour, at least logistically (I'm based in Europe).

Has any of you guys been there and can give me some info/ feedback?

I was there when I was 21 and not into game. I remember the girls selling is stuff on Goree Island being very interested in us. There is also an awesome surf spot at the club med and on the island as featured in the movie "endless summer." I did not go into Dakar city much, but stayed out on the beaches which had good surf. Language is French, so it wouldn't be my first choice in Africa for game. This was 2002. I look forward to the trip report OP.

Few Senegalese will speak understandable English, unless they belong to the street-sellers intl wandering tribe...

In any case, safety has to be your first concern. Personal, and health-related, too. And of course, Dakar is a sandy, sad and bare dump, too... Enjoy (or probably not).

Ivory Coast would have been a much, much better choice...

Senegal has (among Frenchmen who know Africa) a bad reputation for tourism (except a few isolated beach clubs) and (lack of) culture... its capital Dakar is totally third-world, with dusty roads and old derelict small buildings... also, Senegal has bad rep for underage sexual acts and tourism...!

Ivory Coast on the other hand was, and probably is again, the powerhouse of Western Africa. Its interesting, vast and nice capital is (probably with Accra) the best of the region, with modern areas... just a few days ago for example, you had many French businessmen (and Carla Bruni!) having a party in the great Hotel Ivoire... So, yes, if you want to travel to Africa, I recommend Ivory-Coast's Abidjan! (civil and ethnic war is totally over in Ivory Coast). Gaming in Hotel Ivoire is some exotic stuff indeed. Best possible experience in W Africa!

Regarding women... if you like young, slim and eager (for sex and gifts) Black women, Ivory Coast is obviously quite the true poosy paradise. Easy indeed for a (not very poor) Westerner to get a sweet 19 y.o. round-assed Ivoirienne... Just be careful with both Aids and Malaria, and try learning French...

Africa is also very high on my list. I am still torn between the girls in West Africa and the nature in East Africa. It will either be Ivory Coast + Ghana or Ethiopia + Uganda next year in January. If I had more time I would do the naughtynomad West Africa trip from Senegal to Nigeria.

Thanks GS! I will keep that in mind. I chose Dakar mainly because I had some miles to burn and because it is so easily reachable form where I live. It's not like I'm fascinated by Senegalese culture or whatever.

It's a joke, for French expats in Africa, to see unsuspecting tourists going to Senegal, where Ivory Coast obviously has so much more to offer (Abidjan five times more modern than Dakar, Ivoirienne nature much more diverse and green, Ivoiriens people more cultivated in general)...

And do keep in mind the sexual-underage and gay(boy)-tourism stigma that Senegal brings to Western tourists... Basically, only reasons to go to Senegal are, working in charities or seeking underage boys (plus, some people interested in the slaves-history locations on Goree island)

Do be careful, in any case and any W African country, with Aids, petty thefts, and more than anything, with turista-inducing meat or street food, and sickness-bearing mosquitoes!

(Note: unfortunately, islamic terrorism has just landed in Western Africa, too, with the terrorist attack on Abidjan beach a few days ago - be advised that the intended target probably was the best-of-Western-Africa' Hotel-Ivoire)

Note2: Be aware that, in Africa, "la machette n'est jamais loin" (machete is never far from hand)... don't piss off people.

Also be aware of the (sometimes enforced) Yellow-Fever vaccine requisites, coming back from those W Africa countries. Like, a Senegalese border officer at the airport might ask for your yellow-fever certificate... in this case, quietly bribe him 20 usd.

Who cares what some expats think of a tourist? It's not a good idea to write off an entire country just because there's sex tourism, otherwise we could just write off almost all of SEA.
I wouldn't entirely avoid Dakar. Senegal is closer to Europe, there are better and cheaper flight connections, no visa hassles. Dakar (1 million inhabitants) is less hectic than let's say Abidjan with 4 million people, so it's an acceptable destination for an African first-timer.
Also, HIV rate in Senegal is at 1% (Cote d'Ivoire 7%).
Senegal immigration do not check Yellow fewer certificates, I asked two friends, an african and a westerner who visit frequently. They've never been asked to show any other documents than a passport.
Last but not least, I wouldn't advice to bribe a government official at the airport. First, the passport control area is very small and densely packed. You cannot bribe anyone without everyone seeing it. Second, the country is politically stable and police officers are not as bent as in other countries on the continent.
Having said all that, I have no doubt Abidjan is a more exciting destination than Dakar.

The stigma of "pervs going to Senegal for underage sex" is not a totally-unbased or little-known thing. In France, it is a well-known fact, many legal cases have been brought to Justice, resulting in France passing laws to prosecute, in France, this kind of bad travelers!

Well... someone I know (me??) did just that. 20 dollars. Grant you, it was ten years ago... anyway I doubt the country has changed very much since... Africa is not exactly SEA or EE, things don't change... no way bribing has disappeared from Africa in a few years.

Man, the officer will bring you to a small non-descript office to take your money. He won't do it in the open, in front of colleagues and travelers. Not for fear of getting fired, but for fear of having to share the money...

You're the first Westerner I ever heard saying: "I wouldn't advice to bribe a government official in Africa". All French expats advise just the contrary. Nothing would work in W Africa without bribes and "donn larzen" (giv ze monee)...
