No its not safe for the most part. Just look at homicide rates, Bogota isn't as bad as some other Colombian cities like Cali but its still worse than 95% of other places.

Some will say that it is safe if you stay in certain areas. To a certain extent this is true but if a motorbike can stroll up with a gun and rob you of everything in broad daylight in a 'safe' area, I'm not sure how you consider it 'safe'.

For me a safe place is a place that I'm not likely to be killed. In Bogota I wouldn't disagree with the above that you are more likely to be robbed than in many other cities. If you give up your stuff, you're highly unlikely to be killed though, so for me it is safe enough, although I wouldn't disagree if you said it was unsafe, especially for people who aren't street smart.

Bogota in day time felt safe everywhere I went. At night even just at the edges of Zona T I had my guard up immediately. The empty wide dark streets with graffitti everywhere makes it look like Escape from New York. As long as you don't wander the streets at night outside Zona T or Parque 93 and take an Uber straight to your nightlife venue you'll be fine.

"In 2016, the murder rate in the capital (Bogota) was also historically low at 15.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, down 6% from 2015." - from some article.

Chicago, IL homicide rate is almost double for 2016 as a comparison going above 28 per 100k people. Though it is contained much more in the bad blocks.

Safety in Bogota is always a topic of conversation. Definitely need to keep your guard up, it's easy to get caught in a bad situation....happens more when you least expect it....or you disregard that voice in your head.

Perfect example is what happened to these 3 seasoned U.S. Marines back in February...I know exactly where they were staying a nice serviced apartment/hotel in Parque Virrey....they just got suckered into a situation they did not see coming....

Ventured off into a lower/middle class neighborhood (Galerias) with some prepagos.... a no go barrio for military personal. I am sure they are in deep shit with the military and there wives!

Yeah I have..trust the people that live their like newgame and Trully Mars. I think you only have a conceptualization of the scale of violence and the ironies until you live there. Plus street smarts can take some people a long time to develop. I know everyone likes to think they are street smart but if you've lived in a safe place you probably are not. You have no conditioning for it (speaking from experience). I feel like over time I am slowly getting there but I still don't have that awareness of people that some locals have.

Costa Rica is definitely safer, I don't think you'd want to be on the wrong side of San Jose but overall its significantly better. Decent place to get your feet wet for sure.

Wow what a story, I've partied in Galerias before, I wouldn't say it's a dangerous area but you definitely have to keep your whits about you down there, which these guys obviously didn't. A couple of funny things in the article did stick out, apparently there's a burger bar called "The Ugly American" haha and aguardiente is classified as a "highly intoxicating Colombian liquor"!

Interested in moving to Medellín. Some questions for you who have been there:

1. How is the air quality? Does it feel refreshing when breathing outside or do you get asthmatic symptoms?
2. Aircons. Are they used in houses and apartment buildings? Or can you do without them?
3. Is it safe to rent a house if you prefer that over an apartment? Or are you at risk of break ins and robberies?

Also, how about buying prescription drugs like Adderall, Modafinil, Diazepam, Anabolic Steroids etc...is it possible to do so in Colombia without a prescription? Especially interested in stimulants (Amphetamine, Methylphenidate etc - but not Cocaine).

1. Sometimes it's ok and other times it's horrible. I highly recommend avoiding the city if you have asthma. It's in the top 10 most polluted in Latin or South America (don't remember which).
2. Most people live without; it's almost always a comfortable temperature.
3. I'd personally only stay in a house in a community with a doorman or at least a gated community with lots of neighbors. In the last few months I've heard of several house robberies and burglaries(without doormen) and one robbery/extortion.

I don't usually do drugs recreationally. Mostly for productivity. Cocaine is also highly cardiotoxic.

If you go up the mountains the pollution will be way better. However, depending where you go there is a whole lot of construction going on with the people escaping the city and all the construction causes dust if you live close enough. Also, on the outskirts surprisingly most roads are dirt other than the main roads, so there can be a lot of dust in the air if living near a busy dirt road.

Adderall is one of those things only available in the US I believe. You can get anything with no script in Colombia, unfortunately they don't sell it.

Adderall (or some other amphetamine variant) is available in a lot of countries, just under different names. Good to know they don't sell it in Colombia though. Do you think ordering it on the dark net from the US would go through customs? Perhaps I could get a local Doc to write a prescription for me first, just in case.

Is Medellín really as tough to bang as the US? It must be much worse than Bogotá, Cali and other Colombian cities then? Like, 5x as hard. Is it like Thailand in terms of amount of foreigners?
