RE: Workplace Trends 2016 (Infographic)
The amount of boomers vs millennials is massive. At my current company it's mostly dominated by 30+ somethings. My age group is very very small in comparison to other folks.

I find it interesting they predict a baby boom from my generation, though I think they think the demand for "maternity leave" means people will have lots of kids. No dip shits, it means lazy folks want to have a 9 month vacation.

I don't see more women in my age group having lots of kids unless there is some massive war and deflationary spiral that makes it cheap to have a family again.

Automation of jobs is on the rise. Unless the boomers leave the economy on mass there will be more competitive pressure on the younger generations for fewer positions.

Personally I'm looking at the freelance option, but I'll need a few years experience before I can go out on my own.

The automation of jobs scares me the most although it's irresistible.

Just think about which massive skill set one must have in the near future to impress the employer but concurrently they want to lower the cost of talent. Yeah, good luck Generation Z tard

There won't be any baby boom in our generation, but I think economy has little to do with this. It's mostly because more and more young women will choose a Sex & the City lifestyle over that of a wife and mother.

Companies will hire back old boomers. Of course and they already do in the form of non-exec director/consultancy roles...nice big pay cheques for doing very little. Decreasing the amount of 'cream' that is shared in the form of remuneration for the rest. Nice graphic but it puts a very positive and slightly dishonest spin on the potential future of the office workplace.

Unlimited maternity leave, huh?

If only there was some sort of arrangement where a woman doesn't work a vapid corporate job and instead stays home full-time to look after the children...

Correct. And old boomers will return, due to near-zero interest rates wrecking their retirement plans.

It's trickle down - except with bird shit instead of money.

Can one of our elder members explain to me the hiring policies barring "Boomerang Employees?"

I'm mid-twenties and have seen quite a few Boomerang Employees. I thought this was commonplace. They leave to explore other pastures, realize they had it better, and then return to the company. In specialized positions it makes sense to rehire someone who already knows the culture, position, demands, market, etc. Am I missing something, or were employers just pissed at people leaving?

RE: Workplace Trends 2016 (Infographic)
The mere aesthetic and tone of the infograph is giving me motivation to finally exit the working world. I'm currently reading a book on the mindset and psychology of successful financial traders, and hoping I can put it to use in a couple of months.

My main gripe with the image is it completely overlooks the overall realities of the current service economy: that the majority of the work force will either be in "information and intellectual content industries" (tech, finance, marketing/advertising, design, entertainment, ect) that pay well with cushy benefits, with the intellectually anointed working in chic offices and remotely, or in low end medial labor (waitress, bartender, nanny, warehouse worker, ect) whom largely serve those in Info and Content industries. The only non Info and Content industries that are really prevalent, and that that pay well I can think of is Healthcare (it seems like everyone I know is involved in healthcare, either directly or tangentially) or legal services. Also with the massive increase of consolidation across all industries, there is a burgeoning demand for mostly useless middle management, who's main job is to displace responsibility and blame from higher ups. This graph seems focused on those in Info and Content and Mid level stooges (though it mentions automation). There is no photo of a guy working a manufacturing device, farming pigs, installing some plumbing or copper wiring, non of that. It's all people in an offices. I guess it is to be expected the person making is would be in the intellectual content industry, though there is no mention of the lower service workers which shows how out of touch the person making this must be.

Most of the young guys I run into are not getting into office jobs or management, I don't even find young men in IT support. I find most people my age (mid 20's) in warehouses, doing basic logistics (moving and shipping), or retail. I almost never see a younger tag-a-long apprentices with an electrician or plumbers either, but I've not kept my of an eye out. I live in a cosmopolitan city in the USA, so it could be skewing my perceptions of things, but it seems like a lot of the inequality that people point out is a consequence of the modern western service economy and consolidation of companies, so you don't have small middle-to-upper-middle-class business owners anymore that were the main drivers of the economy 50 years ago, and instead of have slew of paper pushing fall men (and sadly women).

The infograph is clearly focused on the anointed going into chic offices, with rubber stamped progressive values and opinions, and ignores the barista at the hip-organic-free-trade-coffee-place with little hope of advancement in society. The Barista will also share the same progressive values as her wealthier customers in an ironic happenstance. I've been speculating that much of the culture war is a manifestation of the Service Economy doing battle with the remains of old fashion capitalist economy, in which the anointed and what amounts to their servants team together to try and destroy the values of traditional america that still makes their living in a more old fashion way (small business, farming, manufacturing, ect), but it sounds 2Marxist4me.

I don't know where there getting this idea of millennial driven baby boom, as actual birth rates in western countries have been in free fall for over a decade, with countries with sustaining populations or growth is usually due to immigration.

Also this maybe off topic, but does the "Gen X, Y, and Z" label annoy anyone else, as if the Boomers have to define all the other generations relative to them?

Most of my generation are considerably lazy and have a fairly poor work ethic coupled with declining social skills. A few have a strong drive to succeed, but there's a strong majority at my college who are aimless and simply have no idea what to do with a college education.

If they're expecting more talent at a lower cost, they're fucked.

Strong post!

For the words in bold, I would say that it is a matter of opinion. For instance in my closer social circle almost everyone went straight into an office after they graduated or plan to do so. In my world aren't any craftspeople so to speak.

And of course the millennial driven baby boom must be a joke. Maybe I can not judge accordingly but if I look at my circle of acquaintances who are at the end of their twenties, they have by far other plans than get married or make a baby. They want to relocate, they want a long vacation / journey around the world, or they are doing their doctoral thesis and so on.

Recently I asked a friend if it is not the right time to make his girlfriend a baby. For me as an outsider everything seems to fit. They know each other long enough, they don't have financial problems etc. But all I got was a "Not yet."

Wouldn't call myself an elder but formerly in boomer time and before that a man would stay at a company for a long period of time for better prospects, internal network, decent salary increases each year and at the end of it all a final salary pension. Commitment and loyalty were rewarded. This is now not the case and people chop and change employers primarily due to it being the only way of gaining a sizeable salary increase for the level of work you are doing. This is all generally speaking of course. In my field of work employees leaving is not discouraged as they go into industry / other multinationals yet retain their old contacts at said previous employer who become clients/providers etc. They then return and the commence business again at their old 'new' employer and the cycle starts again.

There is nothing I hate more than 'regular feedback' and I would be classified as a millennial. While regular feedback on the surface seems beneficial, in my experience, 100% of the time it turns into micro management. In my ideal workplace, everyone just leaves me alone unless I'm missing my targets. Luckily I work for myself. I think I would be fired fast and often in the current work place climate.
