RE: Bogota - How dangerous is it?
The sarcastic posts here are somewhat unhelpful. The OP asked a legitimate question. I've always wanted to go to South America, but i've been turned off by the reports of the crime.

I've never been, but the standard advice of:

1. Don't flash expensive gadgets
2. Don't go to the dangerous areas
4. If having to go to dangerous areas, make sure you do it during the day.
5. When going out at night, make sure you pack cash and have a card ID (driver's license, etc). Leave your credit/debit cards and passport at home. Cut the amount of cash you have in your wallet and put some of it into your shoe. Find a private place to get more from the shoe bank when you need to get more.

It might be worth to get a cheap burner phone instead of using an iPhone as well. The ultimate solution to all of these problems however would be to avoid nightlife and be in bed by 10pm. But that's no fun no isn't it?

1. Watch who you hit on. Colombians go out in groups.
Guys there get jealous. I had issues with guys there
even when girls in their groups hit on ME. lol.

2. Stay in the nicer parts of town.

3. Show no/limited sign of wealth.

4. Be polite and respectful.

5. Be alert. Do not accept drinks from strangers.
Keep money in front pocket. Do not show it off.
Bring cash + copy of password. Maybe 1 CC.

You should be fine....I went to colombia 7 times from
2010 to 2012. The economy there is probably hurting
more with the fall in commodities.

I def feel much more unsafe there compared to asia.
You should be ok.

Cali I felt was the most ghetto. Medellin the nicest.
Bogota is nice but more populated.

RE: Bogota - How dangerous is it?
Thats a really good tip, dont just go up to random tables and start hitting on the women if theyre with guys, it really is a different dynamic down there as people go out in mixed sets and they sit at a table, the waiter brings them their drinks (beers or bottles of rum, guaro, etc). Its not like in other countries where singles go to the bar or club in small groups and openly mix, also, in most clubs, you cant walk up to the bar and order a rum and coke or whatever, you sit your ass down at the table and wait for your server, if you want rum and coke then youll have to buy a small bottle, thats just the way it is. Some places will have mixed cocktails like mojitos and margeritas but they a lot more than a bottle, about $6-8 as opposed to about $40-50 for a 750ml bottle with soda and ice.

Colombians stay at their tables and dance there, things get a bit looser as the night goes on, so when everyone is drunk at 1am you can start mixing but play it smooth. Overall Colombian dudes are pretty cool, some will even link you up with their girls, offer you drinks, etc. However, they can be jealous and if some random drunk gringo saunters over to their table uninvited and starts hitting on their women, they could take it the wrong way.

Bogota and Medellin are the best night game cities where you have all you can drink ladies night bars like Babylon which are better as they attract groups of single women, Cali is the worst in my opinion for night game, not only because is so salsa-centric, but youll rarely see groups of single women out along, they almost always have guys with them.

God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!
