I feel safer having a shield, especially if the person breaking in ends up swinging a sharp object around in my direction.

I keep a Riot Shield (used for paint-balling) and a metal baseball bat on the wall adjacent to my bed + many others blades of assorted sizes hanging up as decorative pieces.

You can pick up a shield relatively cheap, mine resembles the one below.

I've heard from a couple folks (including the great Gordon Liddy) that the best weapon for an untrained user is a baseball bat. It makes sense to me as it's the rare weapon where the immediately intuitive way people have of using it is also the most effective way to employ it.

And in self-defence-hostile states it's also one of the more plausible non-weapon weapons you can have "lying around", which is why I suggested a cricket bat for the UK or the colonies.

Keeping the other assorted paraphernalia around also helps. Having a cricket bat in your car in Australia can be considered illegal in and of itself, but if you keep it in a sports bag with some cricket balls, a box, a helmet and some kneepads then the attending police are not going to start diving into your sporting history.

I've read one can use an invisible weapon in the form of a protection mantra:
for example, Om Krim Kali.
or this mantra: Om Namah Shivaya

When you are confronted by an enemy, you just chant one of these mantras,
and he will not be able to do anything.
But you have to believe in this, and practice it for a while, I guess.

A dog is head and shoulders above anything else as it's proactive.

The rest of the weapons are reactive and you need to be aware and able to respond.

The only drawback with a dog is that burglars can throw over some food laced with poison or sedatives and your dog is man down.

Here in South Africa, it's quite a problem. I caught a guy breaking in to the house opposite last week, the neighbour was screaming at 8PM.

It's a weekly occurrence here and people are generally blase towards guns.

That being said, a dog is still the best option with electric fencing and an alarm system.

Humans, myself included are usually slow to respond.

They broke into my uncle's house a few months ago and burned CDs outside their windows. The fumes put everyone to sleep for a good while. My cousin who is a light sleeper was out for the count too.

For the sake of argument, a gun remains the best option but there are too many paranoid people in South Africa who aren't intelligent enough to handle a gun (Oscar Pistorius, looking at you).

Anything else isn't good enough because it draws you into their range. They usually have guns, crowbars, knifes; motherfuckers here are armed to the teeth when they do home invasions.

Then you have hijacking outside your house where you need some pro driving skills and awareness as to if you're being followed.

Good excuse to ram the back end of your bar into the attacker in both the above situations.

Self defence in South Africa is on a whole other level.

I wouldn't live there, flat out. Shooting up a bunch of bad-guys or running them over? Even if you win you lose on some level.

True story, half of self defence is either running, avoiding certain areas or crossing the road when someone looks off.

Probably why we have the best mercenaries in the world.

This is residential crime, not even farm self defence, which is absolutely mental.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
Well, today I had to make a spear for another purpose (to retrieve some fruit up a tree) and instantly remembered this thread.

So I decided to do a quick simulation with nothing but what was in the kitchen with me.

I grabbed a full tang 7" blade pointed knife out of the knife block, a broom... but there was no string of any kind on hand.

Lucky for me, I had 2" wide sports bandage on myself. Perfect for tying the knife to the broom stick as it compressed and held it in place solidly. If you were to prepare it, you'd cut a notch down the end of the broom stick so the knife sits "in" one half of the dowel for added rigidity.

Anyway, it took around a minute to cobble up. Too long if someone is already in your house.

It would have been very effective to use for defence, allowing easy rapid fire thrusts because the broom stick was light... and with the brush still on the end, it was a good stopper to prevent it from sliding out of your hands with the bonus of being able to quickly sweep up the mess afterwards.

It would have been useless for any sort of clubbing due to length and lack of mass.
It requires both hands to use.
It would have been useless if the intruder got past the spear point, grabbed the shaft and just went at you with a knife.

So my takeaway from all this is that if you want a spear, make sure you have a backup knife for close quarters... which is difficult since you need both hands for the spear (no shields either for you shield-boys).

2 tips:

1) Don't leave your knives hanging around in plain sight. They are easily accessible by multiple intruders. Always assume at least 2 people with 3 being very likely if there are gangs in your area. Sidenote: if you ever come home to someone in your house and you call the cops, always mention they are in the kitchen armed with knives. It'll be the difference between cops rocking up an hour later for a burglary investigation vs heading out immediately for an armed assault.

2) If you're going to use your bulky shield, don't plan on also using your baseball bat because the shield will just make it harder to swing. Use a knife with your shield because it'll get to the point where the shield gets grabbed and you will be in very close quarters where a knife is the only option. Also I think you mentioned paintball... a paintball marker would fuck anyone's eyes quick from a distance and beats the shield.

3) Use your fucking brains, train and test, at least so you can get some reactive muscle memory, sharper instincts and fear control in the very unlikely event that something does happen.

A dog is great defense as long as it is trained to do so. At the very least any dog will bark and/or whine when someone is entering your home even if it's just a lap dog.

May sound absurd, but I think a chainsaw is a great non-projectile home defense. The sound alone makes it terrifying especially indoors. Tell me you wouldn't turn and fucking run when breaking into someone's house if you hear that ripcord then a wide open throttle saw.

Get some.

Dodgy

You're not getting a paintball marker in Australia without a gun license, which means if you have a gun licence then there's not much point buying a paintball marker, blinding some idiot and then being sued. I might add that a paintball marker is a firearm in Australia and the use of it is governed in the same way as firearms. You are literally better off killing a home invader with a .303 than blinding some hood rat with a paintball gun and having your life torn to shreds as little Johnny ghetto sits in court is a lovely borrowed suit with his oversized mirror shades and his walking cane.

Should we leave aside the "multiple intruders arming themselves with your cutlery" as absurd since if they were going to resort to lethal force they would have brought their own weapons with them?

Seriously, Jack. I don't know why you chose to make an account in a PUA forum only to bare your ass in a self-defence thread, but it's gone from amusing to pitiable. You clearly have no grasp on the subject other than what you can conjure out of an imagination fed by what's being revealed to be an extremely limited pool of life experience. Even your "common sense" advice is poorly grounded and easily laid bare.

Stop spending your life trying to impress strangers. Make a new account and start getting advice from guys like Travelerkai. When you listen you learn. When you talk you teach. And if you have nothing to teach then all you end up teaching us that you're apparently a slightly angry, lonely and very insecure young man.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
Didn't read the entire thread but read the OP and much of this last page. All great ideas.

I will say one thing though, if you live in a part of the world where there is a high chance that someone breaking into your home could have a gun, even if it is not visible or you suspect otherwise for some reason, only pull out your weapon as a last resort if you feel you could be killed. Otherwise I recommend trying your best to let the robber take what he wants quickly and letting him leave.

You can look up the story yourselves of the NFL player whose house was being robbed that went downstairs with a machete. A man of that physical ability, for the most part regardless of combat experience or high level skill with a machete, can for the most part win a fight with an intruder or at least get him out of the premises. Also some might say NFL players aren't exactly warriors in a direct sense but I have a strong reason to believe he could have overpowered just about any man hand to hand. I've boxed a smaller and less powerful college football player and it wasn't pretty, and this guy wasn't near the level to play in the NFL.

This guy came down with a machete and was shot and killed. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

If you live in a place where the intruder might have a gun then either have a gun yourself or use any other weapon as a last resort. Holding a phone in your hand making it obvious that you've phoned the police is probably a better solution than many other things.

Focusing on some serious gaming and personal development for the next few months. Will be taking PMs though.

p.s. Fuck off too. And before you get emotional, know that I'll enjoy laughing at your next time waste of a rant.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
I have been following this thread with interest and wow, there are a ton of great ideas here and the debates have been amazing. I would like to offer the following for what it's worth:

1. I don't think it is possible to find the "perfect" weapon. Everything that gets factored in to the situation means that there is no such thing as perfect, much like the perfect diet, workout routine, or female weapons are similar in that it is the best one for you under your particular set of circumstances. Legality, skill, ease of procurement, etc, etc, all factor in and what might be perfect for one person at one time can change depending on all these factors.
2. Some people on this thread are really playing the " what if game" a little too hard. Now, nothing wrong with good planning, but in debates such as this one the playing the "what if game" can rapidly lead you down the road of focusing a bit to much on scenario's that are certainly within the realm of possibility but not really probable.

That being said, I don't like knives as self defense weapons simply because I am not trained in there use. I remember an idea I was taught in the military was that knives should be avoided if possible in a stand up face to face fight. The reason being that 99% of people wilding knives are not trained in there use and if you cannot flee a knife attacker it is better to face them empty handed because you have two hands versus their one. Central to this idea is that defender has some degree of experience in grappling and the attacker falls into the 99% of individuals out there that have no formal knife fighting training.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
I said it before in passing but I'll emphasise it specifically.

Ending up playing knifey-spooney with some hopped up crackhead in your living room is something you need to do everything in your power to avoid long before the scumbag ever picks your house to rob.

Even if you rent, there are ways to reinforce your doors and windows. If you're forced to live in a shitty part of town or a part of town bordering a shitty part of town then you should factor security into your choice of house or apartment.

Some of your options are portable and require no holes to be drilled. This for example:

If you're willing and able to make permanent alterations to the property (long term lease with amiable owners) then your options are less limited.

With this in mind, you're either going to need the appearance of high security or you're going to want to make your weakest looking entrance the most fortified one. Johnny Scumbag will obviously pick the easiest looking entrance and by the time he's broken his shoulder trying to get in you'll be awake, armed and yelling to him that the cops are on their way.

Any apartment above ground level is a piece of cake. You have one entrance to deal with (unless there are adjoining balconies at the complex).

On the ground floor you have windows. Options for dealing with this will depend on what allowances you have to drill/cut/etc.

Houses are harder but far from impossible. For renters the best option is to fortify the main entrances and whichever bedroom you use. For this approach a sensor alarm system in the other rooms is a must since if you're a deep sleeper then someone could access the house through the windows only for you to wake up, unbar your bedroom door, go for a piss and bump into them.

Basic home security systems are now affordable and portable, so if you're worried about getting into a knife fight with a local crackhead then you really owe it to yourself to exhaust every possibility PRIOR to actually having to stick someone in the guts with whatever knife, fork or spoon you managed to snatch out of the dishwasher at the last second.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
I have a kubotan handy which is great if you've ever boxed before, You will be fast but still have skull crushing or eye popping power. That would be an ideal backup weapon.

Primary I'd go with a Latin machete or kukhri as others have mentioned. Still maneuverable but like crocodile Dundee says, 'now that's a knife'.

RE: Best home defense weapon (excluding firearms)
While firearms might be excluded, there are a lot of jurisdictions that are much more lenient about owning deactivated or replica firearms. Of particular interest would be any wartime rifle with sturdy bayonet mounts.

The guy down the hall doesn't know it's not a real gun, and even if he tries his luck then he'll find out that the bayonet on the end is a very real weapon.
