The answer to both questions is: Nothing about this is supposed to make sense. This is a show of force, intended to strike (or reinforce) fear in people.

In the clip with Henry Rollins I posted above, Rollins sums up his impression of NK as "poor people who are scared of their government." He likely understates the case.

At 12:30, after concluding his prepared speech, Warmbier takes "questions" from reporters. His responses are obviously scripted and memorized, written by someone who is both completely committed to the NK regime, and not especially proficient in English.

Incredibly, there seems to be no written transcripts of this "press conference" online. Here then is Warmbier's response to the first question he is asked, about why the Friendship United Methodist Church assigned him the task of stealing the poster:

Peculiarly, not a single MSM outlet has referred to Warmbier's ties with Israel. Until his last hours, Israel and the Jewish community kept silent about Warmbier’s Jewish identity, his Zionist affiliation and his visit to Israel. Maybe this silence is more revealing than anything else.

Warmbier hid his religious and political background, trying to pass as a Christian, a member of a Methodist church in Cincinnati. Now why would he lie about this, and why would the media cover this up? Don't you think it's weird that the MSM didn't bother to check out his real background?

I'm going to guess that the N. Korean secret service busted him for petty crime then upon further interrogation, found out that he was lying about his background, and this was enough for them to suspect he was a spy.

If you believe that Birthright is some sort of secret Mossad training camp, you're fucking insane. I was Jewish before I converted to Catholicism and went on birthright. My experience (and by the way, everyone else I know had the same one) is that the program was largely an excuse to be with a bunch of young, horny Jews and end up hooking up with those of the opposite sex.

Yes, there are Israeli nationalist parts of the program, no doubt. Yes, there are segments in which Zionism is exalted as part of the Jewish life. But some sort of secret indoctrination program? Nobody's saying it's a Mossad training camp.

If Mossad isn't using Birthright to look for potential help, they're negligent in their jobs. I've never heard anybody say that Mossad was negligent in their jobs.
