I can't imagine why anyone takes the words of any government at face value. Let alone the worst one currently in existence.

Seriously, why? Someone brain damages some poor fucker and we still feel comfortable repeating their original reason for incarcerating him like it's a fact?

What next, taking the word of some drugged out bum as reliable testimony? Frankly that'd be a lot more credible because at least he's just some drugged out bum, and he doesn't have malicious intent in his words.

I think taking state propaganda at face value is fundamentally a form of lazyness, and that the continuance of evil is primarily a byproduct of humans at large failing to think, which is the most common form of lazyness there is.

This is a murder victim, not a thief.

The funeral was held today.

According to the BBC, there were over 2500 people present.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40372080

Towards the end of the article, they say that Warmbier's family did not want a thorough autopsy done. My first reaction was, "Why the hell not?"

Something seems to be going on here, and I'm getting the feeling that our government is trying to bury this story as quickly as possible. Why? They (like everyone else) know this kid was murdered, but the more that news gets out, the more people are doing to want retaliation.

The sad truth is that there is not much we really can do about this. I get that. Maybe some more financial restrictions, and things like that. But the truth should still come out.

^ Probably because they already know the answer, as we do, and they see little point in having his body chopped up before the funeral. Not everything has to be (((they))) and Zelcorpion stuff. The poor bastard just got killed by some psychos who are well overdue a brutal overthrow and Saw-style punishment, it's a shame the Nationalists didn't win the Chinese civil war, and there's little else to say.

I have no real idea what they must be going through but to lose their child must be agony. Guessing they just want to put it behind them as quickly as possible.

I doubt Trump will forget. NK is clearly on his mind, if only as a piece in the (not going to say how many dimensions) chess game with China.

Quintus,

Do you suspect that NK will hold prisoners in reasonably good health and then poison or otherwise torture them within an inch of their lives before sending them home?

It wouldn't surprise me.

I honestly wouldn't put anything past this regime. Those of us growing up in the West can't really wrap our minds around just how programmed the people in that country are.

They are raised from infancy to believe that we--the US--is responsible for all the evils of the world. They blame us for literally everything. The whole system encourages militancy, fanaticism, and racist bigotry. That's another thing that's a big, dirty secret about Korea. They view foreigners as inferior, including the Chinese and Japanese.

They are pure fanatics. Read about the DMZ "Axe Murder" incident in the mid 1970s. You can find it on You Tube. I visited the DMZ once as part of a tour from Seoul in the mid 1990s. That's when you realize this is no joke.

The country produces nothing of any value. It can't compete on the world stage. So what they do is commit crimes: literally. No other government in the world does this. None. The government actually helps rob banks (electronically), commit insurance fraud on a massive scale, deal drugs, counterfeit currency, and kidnap innocent people to use as language teachers.

Honestly I wish we had never gotten involved in that miserable war in 1950. We should have let those bastards all fight it out among themselves. But in those days, our government assumed that all communist nations were acting in concert, and all were controlled by Moscow. We now know that wasn't true.

And we're stuck there now. And the thing is: what the hell do we get out of South Korea? Nothing. In fact, we're bankrupting our own country, and impoverishing our own middle class, to make those people rich. South Korea likes to play the role of victim ("Oh, poor me, we're victims of Japan's colonialism"), but they have one of the highest living standards in the world.

It's a bloody sham. Those pricks all deserve each other. We should just pull out of all these places and let these dorks pay for their own defense. Then they'll find out it's not so easy when you have to spend 25% of your budget on defense.
President Carter tried to get out of Korea in the 1970s but he was basically blackmailed into staying. Our country is stuck in places like Germany and Korea for no reason other than to play the games of empire.

I don't trust either one of them. Neither North nor South Korea. They're cats of the same stripe that deserve each other. South Korea would stab us in the back in a heartbeat. When we were trying to negotiate an armistice to end the war in 1953, South Korean president Rhee deliberately opened up all the POW camps to release the North Korean prisoners. That was his way of trying to torpedo the armistice negotiations. He stabbed us in the back. I suspect that if we ever tried to leave now, they would pull something similar.

American David Sneddon, who went missing 12 years ago, was reportedly kidnapped (in China) to teach English to Kim Jong and/or his children. Think about how motivated you be to do that job, teaching English to your captor for twelve years.

This is what happens when you let Born Again Crusaders go to NKor to save Commies for Christ Today.... They send your dumb ass home in a Coma or a Body Bag... not like the Canadian border where you can "accidentally" hike across it and come to the USA to stab cops in the Neck chanting Allahahu Wackbar - or some Snowbordie grunge begpacker broads stumble over the boarder to the Great White North with signs "Will Bang for Weeeed - Nookie for Cookies and Milk Duudes!"

You have to actively and arrogantly cross over a border surrounded by Mine Fields to get into NKor with militant commies trained to hate us at the risk of their own families being imprisoned if they do not follow orders to the letter of the Dear Leaders wishes.

Sad and Dumb.

I'm grateful his comatose corpse of a body wasn't used as a vector to deliver some mutant ebola plague cooked up in a clandestine NK lab.

The parents lovingly and sympathetically pulled the plug. They probably had lobotomized him while enslaved.

Unlike Japan, which merely borrowed ideas and language from China, Korea is a peripheral nation that is used to being completely and utterly dominated by the Chinese in terms of official ideology and foreign policy. Korea's mode of national independence is to be protected and shaped by a larger country, whilst leeching off of it. Today the US rather than China fulfills the role of dominant power (for the ROK), but we see that Korea considers itself open to accommodating Chinese needs as well. Much of the Korean economy depends on China and their new liberal president just cancelled the THAAD deployment. I respect Korean culture and ethnic unity, but it must be said that their nation's way of going about the world is rather womanly -- one day they are with you, the next they ditch you.

When Trump remarked that Korea used to belong to China, he wasn't totally off the mark (northern Korea has been under direct control of the Chinese court from time to time), but he was also giving the country a warning. It's one they probably won't heed.

"Maybe in the US, where young, white, rich, clueless white males routinely get away with raping women,"

What a spectacular display of ignorance.

Further proof that feminism is a form of mental illness.

Quote:Warmbier: Professor fired for saying he 'got what he deserved'

Otto WarmbierReuters
Mr Warmbier was jailed for 15 years for attempting to steal a propaganda sign
A Delaware college has severed ties with a professor who said a student who was held by North Korea and later died "got exactly what he deserved".

Kathy Dettwyler sparked a backlash on Facebook when she wrote Otto Warmbier was "typical of a mindset of a lot of young, white, rich, clueless males".

Mr Warmbier, 22, died a week after he was freed by North Korea, where he was serving 15 years hard labour.

He was medically evacuated earlier this month and died in a coma.

Ms Dettwyler, an anthropology professor at the University of Delaware, criticised Mr Warmbier in a post on her Facebook page, blaming his parents for what happened to him.

Mr Warmbier, fourth from right, is seen shortly before his arrest
"These are the same kids who cry about their grades because they didn't think they'd really have to read and study the material to get a good grade," she wrote.

Will we ever know what happened to Otto Warmbier?
"His parents ultimately are to blame for his growing up thinking he could get away with whatever he wanted."

"Maybe in the US, where young, white, rich, clueless white males routinely get away with raping women," she continued.

"Not so much in North Korea. And of course, it's Otto's parents who will pay the price for the rest of their lives."

Mr Warmbier, an economics student from the University of Virginia, was accused of trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel.

North Korea said it released Mr Warmbier on "humanitarian grounds" and claimed the student had contracted botulism, a rare illness that causes paralysis, after he was given a sleeping pill.

But a team of doctors who assessed him in Cincinnati said they had found "no sign of botulism" and that Mr Warmbier had suffered "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause.

Otto Warmbier's father, wearing his son's jacket, told reporters last week his son had been treated "brutally"
Before Ms Dettwyler's post was removed, it was shared by thousands of users, including some who said they would not send their children to the university because of her comments.

How harsh is prison in North Korea?
How did Otto Warmbier's holiday end in his death?
The college said in a statement on Sunday it would not re-hire Ms Dettwyler to teach "in the future".

The school said in an earlier statement that Ms Dettwyler's comments were "particularly distressing and inconsistent with our values".

"We condemn any and all messages that endorse hatred and convey insensitivity toward a tragic event such as the one that Otto Warmbier and his family suffered," the school said.

Not so sure about that. I see bushy hair and whiskers, but no pony tail.

I'm not surprised it was a professor in feminist anthropology. That's the intersection of crazy and evil.

UPDATE: I do think there's a morsel of truth in what she wrote. IF (a big if) he did what he was accused of, he shouldn't have been so naive when dealing with a totalitarian government. If she's making the point that Americans are ignorant about oppression in other societies, including North Korea, that is undeniable. If his parents and his culture led him to believe that the world is unicorns and rainbows, then that's partially on them. That's a charitable reading of her post, I know, given her rant about 'young, white, rich, clueless white males' and rape. (She apparently included 'white' twice in this list.)

Half of the point with OWs entire incident is that we have no idea what he actually did (if anything). Since the lack of due process and pathological lies from North Korea makes any official claims worthless.

Yup. I can't believe people honestly say "Well, he stole a poster....NK wouldn't make such a lie, they would come up with something better".

No, they wouldn't. They have no reason to come up with a "good lie". NK gives zero fucks. They don't have to explain or justify shit to anyone, they don't have a boss. This was a message to the US.

Just to add to Cattle Rustler's post.

Strategic forward thinking with respect to lying is pretty much a unique Anglo trait. In other words when Anglos construct lies it's done with a greater level of consistency and coherence in order to stand up to rigorous scrutiny. On the other hand, there are cultures that aren't so forward-thinking, including when it comes to lying. Lies, often crappy ones, are told with the expectation on the liar's part, and out of hubris, that ithe lie will be believed and on the recipients' part that it won't be challenged.

I found this to be very true in SEAsia.

It's basically expected for people to make up retarded lies that make no sense, and then you are just supposed to go along with it because calling them out would cause everyone to lose face.

It's fucking stupid and another reason why Anglo culture is better than others.

That's interesting. I wonder if it has to do with language.

That's a subject I've become more interested lately. How language shapes our thoughts and brains.

Isn't English (and similar languages) relatively utilitarian and kinda boring? Asian languages seem to be more expressive and flamboyant. Italian seems to be more suave and romantic.

Qualifier: I don't know shit about languages, so I could be totally off here.

^ I think it has more to do with Confucianism than language. Although, Confucianism has left its imprints on languages. For example, honorific speech in Japanese and Korean languages. Honorific forms go way beyond what we call formal speech in western languages. Anyway, although Confucianism is no longer the prevailing philosophy in Asian countries, it is where the concept of not questioning authority figures such as leaders, bosses, age-superiors comes from.

I'm more surprised that people fell for their word right off the bat. No questioning or nothing. The west should teach more critical thinking skills and less soy eating skills.

Education in Asian countries focuses on rote memorization as opposed to critical thinking. It wouldn't be unreasonable to surmise that in NK that a large portion of the education experience is indoctrination.
