^^Honestly all I do is brush it back or to the side with a badger brush immediately when I get out of the shower. After it drys a bit I run my hands through it give it some volume. People think I must be using something but I never do.

I've been wearing my hair the same way for years though so it is more or less trained to stay in its place.

I wish I could do that. I have the thickest hair - probably in the entire world, ever, and a very straight hairline. It is fairly limiting. I'm always considering growing it out, as I think that having enough weight in it to push it back behind my ears may be the only way to get it to behave. It is a conundrum though, as I've always subscribed to the 'long hair is for chicks and queers' school of thought.

I can't hate on long hair. When mine was long it was a pussy magnet. I would get chatted up just walking across the street. Military life makes this impossible now.

What I really want to get on the subject of now is winter coats. I spent last winter on the east coast and never needed anything too heavy. It's starting to get cold up here now and I am without a stylish winter coat.

I want something longer than normal. Preferably.

Navy surplus pea coats are the way to go for a good every day coat. I got mine 5 years ago for £20, new, and it still draws compliments regularly. It's a great coat, very warm, stylish, and I can get plenty of layers underneath if it is bitter out.

For formal wear I inherited one of these Turnbull and Asser overcoats from an uncle who goes through clothes like there is no tomorrow:

If you don't want to spend too much old spice works just fine. Used to use it up until recently. Available most everywhere Walmart, Target, etc.

Get it off Amazon. Much stronger hold, but still feels just as natural. Key with pomade is that you shouldn't use too much.

Give Suavecito regular hold pomade a shot - cheap, water based, and effective. Amazon. Firm hold is kinda clumpy.

Shoutout Lush. A few months ago while traveling somewhere cold AF I needed chapstick. I was walking around the mall and smelt LUSH a mile away, started looking around and saw that all the products had clean ingredients. I bought the "Lip Service" chapstick and love it.

I ended up buying a few other products and enjoyed them but felt they were overpriced and over-fragrenced. Often times you can make your own products using just the key ingredients. For example I bought a $10 LUSH face mask that gave me 3 uses. Instead I could buy a large bottle of ACV for $6 and a bentonite clay container for $7 that would get me 20 uses (and be more effective).

In their defense I appreciate the great ingredients and will be gifting LUSH to girls. It's a good way to say "I value beauty" and "love organic natural shit I see on RVF."

That hair gel is the ONLY product I buy.

I do a honey and lemon face mask occasionally but it's kind of a pain in the ass.

I've written about it before here, but I've been having great results with a homemade pomade.

It's super easy to make (you just have to melt and mix and the ingredients), cheap, highly customizable (fragrance, hold, shine), non-irritant (even on my sensible scalp), lasts forever.

This is the exact one I have. It's more expensive than it was when I bought it 5 years ago, as you'd imagine. I got mine from a surplus too, rather than Amazon. Since it's a US model, you should be able to find one at an equivalent price. Heartbreakingly, £50 is pretty much $50 at the moment.

You're welcome, buddy.

It looks pretty good for what it is meant to be. By that I mean: it broadens your shoulders, the large lapels with the collar turned up give you depth and make you look physically larger. I tend to wear it open, with my hands in my pockets - this allows you to create a taper for yourself. Fundamentally though, the pea coat is a practical item, and looks it. It is blocky, there's plenty of room in the arms, right down to the cuffs, to get the extra layers in, and there's no real taper to it.

Personally I like that - I think it is possible to look over tailored, and think that highly tapered/tailored casual wear makes you look pretty faggy. Tailored coats look great when they are long, and formal. Short coats with a taper tend to flare out around your arse and hips, and make you look like a poof. You don't want material bunching tightly around that area in my opinion, better to wear something open that is deliberately less shaped, with something more flattering underneath, than to look like you've tailored yourself all the way down - you just look like a narcissist. There's a time and place for that - with formal wear. If you can't leave the house without a tapered tshirt, tapered jumper, tapered coat etc, then you may look fashionable, but to me that always looks overly contrived and attention seeking.

I shop once a year for high quality clothes that will last me a long time irrespective of price(so I buy a few articles of clothing I know are good) and sparingly buy a jacket, belt, or shirt a few times in the year if I see something nice. With shoes I buy a pair every time one of the 4 pairs I own fall apart or become unusable(day, night, gym, formal).


Key to building a good wardrobe is that it's a slow process and should take you a few years in order to transition yourself into a timeless look. Everything you buy should be something you will always wear irrespective of what year it is. So unless you have lots of excess money to blow it'll take you a while.

Went to a thrift store today to look for a shirt for my Pablo Escobar Halloween costume.

Found a nice wool burgundy blazer. Didn't buy it but I'm thinking about going back and getting it. It's not a loud pice, but definitely unique. Price: US$15.

Fits well around the shoulders and arms. Minimal padding, casual pocket. Would only have to tighten it a bit around the waist.

Would you wear?
