The teacher was fired and sent to jail for statutory rape, and after he came out of jail after a year, was put on a permanent sex offender list. The older sister stuck by the guy and married him, and they now have two children. The guy obviously, has had a very hard time building a career and finances for them have been hard.

The younger sister, now 10 years later, is asking for advice on how to make amends. Says she has tried repeatedly to apologize, but the older sister has refused to talk to her for 5 years, and will not come to any event in which the younger sister is present. Emily's advice was to put it bluntly - you're fucked and never going to be forgiven. Some commenters inthe posts below the article said the only way to would be to buy forgiveness for a very large sum of money, and even then, would probably still be rejected.

This is an example of a jealous younger sibling, in a moment of youth, permanently fucking up someone else's life for very trivial and fleeting reasons.

That woman should publish her story in a major outlet -- maybe Emily Yoffe can help her get it into Slate. She should describe clearly the evil insanity of consent laws that make a dangerous criminal and lifelong pariah of a 22 year old man who falls in reciprocated love with a 17 year old woman. She should then devote her life to becoming a paralegal assistant who works for lawyers that file appeals on behalf of such defendants; she should make sure that every i is dotted and every t is crossed on each such appeal. She should testify before Congress, and any and all state and local commissions whose business it is to consider these terrible and life-destroying laws.

After she has done this for at least a decade -- devoting essentially every waking moment of her life to the endeavor -- she should come to her sister and her sister's husband and humbly beg them for forgiveness.

The state is all about making money. A man of a house/family deals with the matter. If someone is killed, the law deals with it!

Its only turned to a Nanny state cause women don't turn to ther man for help cause she is on her own so she turns to the state and calls a policeMAN. A man living on his own will deal with the matter himself!

I found out that only about 70% of the people that get a law degree are still working in the field afterwards. (i.e. they can't find a job that would pay more than something outside of working as a lawyer.) And many of them are not even earning enough money to be able to pay off the $100K+ in student loans they took out to be able to go to law school. I know a number of people that ended up far worse off after law school as far as income because, unless you have an in with a law firm owned by your family or in the top few percent at a top school, everyone else ends up working as a contractor for $25/hr from time to time,OR ends up working as a Assistant District Attorney or Public Defender for $28K/year.

The fact that he'd put this stepdaughter's word before his own flesh and blood is what I found most appalling. Rape and sexual molestation are the most heinous things she could've accused her stepbrother of short of outright murder. I'd tell that stepdaughter that if I found out she was lying, their would be dire consequences to pay!

Horrible but believable. He said stepdaughter, so probably the biological daughter of the mother. The mother was probably totally on her daughters side, and possibly well indoctrinated on feminist rape culture. The dad being the beta cuck he is had his balls owned by his wife. The wife pressured him to go against his son and he did. I buy it.

This is a lesson that people need to have drilled into them: never invite the law into your life, and do everything you can to avoid its attention.

Every week it seems like Reason Magazine has a new story of some parent worrying about their schizophrenic child, phoning the police, and then the child winds up dead. Then you have situations like this. While I certainly don't want to bash cops (heck, I'm even planning to attend a friend of mine's police graduation later this year), the fact is that when you invite the law into your life you're throwing away your fourth amendment rights. Invite them into your home, and you're offering them a chance to search it.

Do you know all the laws covering knives in your district? Is the organic milk you bought legal? Is there something suspicious but innocuous that could wind up with you being put under surveillance?

I wish that weren't the way of the world but it is. Avoid the law, courts, and lawyers if you possibly can.
