Judges, Doctors, Police officers, etc are among those positions because they genuinely make life and death decisions. If she worked in IT, marketing, fashion, etc that level of trust and accountability isnt there to the same degree.

That says, I've never assaulted a random person while I was drunk. I've never tried stealing someone's car keys, especially someone I didn't know, and didn't go trampling around in their car. This woman is about to become a neurologist. She would have executive power over someone's brain and body, possibly with only trained professional underlings that may not be able to countermand a bad decision of hers. Everyone makes mistakes.

However, I don't see how this can be misconstrued as a mistake or simply being an asshole. I've never found alcohol to change a person's character, just reveal what was within. This girl had zero respect for this man. Zero respect for the consequences. Zero respect for his property. Zero respect for the people that ordered the Uber. This is something deep within her soul. Would she spitefully snap and do something wrong with a patient? I would hope not, but I can't predict the future.

Her superiors have to approve, to medical boards, that they recommend her for being a responsible enough individual to be in charge of someone else's life. People with loved ones, children, real issues. Would you sign off on this creature, having seen what it is capable of?

Say it: "Yes, I recommend this woman to have complete control over a patient's life, to do no harm, and stake my reputation on it."

I wouldn't. But, it's not my call.

Mass communication is a fact of life now. Anything you do has the potential to stick around and haunt you forever. Sometimes, even when you think you have your bases covered. Sometimes, it reveals what you intended to keep behind closed doors. Sometimes, it's going to hurt, and going to hurt bad. Sometimes there isn't a good moral reason for it. It's okay to be mad about that. But, it's shouting into the wind to argue the consequences of physics.

It's called being a doctor. Doubly so if you're a specialist like a surgeon. I've met enough of these guys to get pretty appalled at the superiority complex going on in many of them. As a group they really, really don't think of themselves as mere mortals, and there's precious few who have a bedside manner, social skills, or emotional intelligence much better than Josef Mengele. Some I've met in specialties have been positively Aspie, and that's just the women.

I don't know how it is in the States, but in South Africa our medical board demands that doctors must 'uphold the dignity of the profession.' I suspect that American boards probably have similar rules.

In other words, you can lose your license for things you do outside of work, if it tarnishes the profession in general. If you are a habitual criminal or drunkard, and even if it has nothing to do with your work life, provided it reflects badly on doctor then a board is allowed to strike your name off the roll of practitioners.

A lot of what we doctors do is reliant on patient's trusting us, and if a doctor is running around ruining the public trust, that makes every doctor's job more difficult. We are already struggling with public trust in general as more and more patients abandon western medicine for homeopathy and other 'alternative' healthcare options.

It was strongly implied in my medical training that as a doctor in public, regardless how far we are from our workplace, that you are still a doctor and what you do outside of work can have implications for your professional status. I'm pretty sure this Indian doctor was aware of this too.

Let's face it, medicine is not a profession you do, it's a profession you marry. You are always forced to be a doctor - some specialisations are more intense in this than others, but if a patient phones you at 2 o' clock in the morning for advice, you still have a duty to look after that patient. If someone collapses in front of you in the supermarket, then there is a duty to assist that patient, even if all you can do is call an ambulance. Being a doctor is not something you are allowed to switch on-and-off.

Some branches of medicine give a greater degree of control than others but ultimately your priority in life as a doctor will always be the practice of Medicine with a capital M, and it will always overrule other priorities such as family, religion, social life, etc. If that sounds tyrannical, then you are in the wrong profession.

So far the board hasn't taken any action, it's all coming from the hospital and university. Considering how quickly they acted, this probably isn't her first offense.

Full disclosure:

1. I know people who know her. For anyone who has sympathy with this girl, I can confirm from primary sources that she has a huge entitlement complex.
2. Regarding Indian women, I fully agree with Kaotic. This was something that surprised me when I came to the US: why were these girls who were stupid, hadn't accomplished anythng and sometimes plain ugly thinking they were goddesses. Their princess Jasmine complex is insane.
