Or any other major U.S intelligence service, really. I'm a college guy who's planning on double majoring in Arabic(including studying abroad in Morocco), a language which I've heard is in high demand from several intelligence agencies. If anyone knows what further qualifications would be useful for working in such places, or what their workplace culture is like, I would appreciate their input. These agencies pay well and they seem like interesting places to work.

Well, since the CIA website says not to tell anyone you're going out for it and they do incredibly extensive background checks, I'd say your best bet is to pick a new dream job.

FBI, like all government agencies, seems to hire a lot of women. I was watching the san bernandino shooting investigation most of the footage looked like this:


I know many college women seem to get scooped up into cushy government jobs. I think they're all worthless. It's become a 'diverse' 'equal opportunity' incompetent shithole IMO. I'm to the point where I have a really low opinion and am suspicious of any government worker.

I'm sure they have some smart people but I get the strong impression all government jobs are now hiring based on your minority status. So as a white male your only hope might be telling them you're a fag. Don't mean to be so hateful but literally every branch of government I see on tv it's entirely women.....just my opinion as an outsider.

I'm Indian, not white. I wouldn't call a job intercepting and translating ISIS communications worthless...I'm not trying to work in some bullshit HR job. Hopefully by the end of two years of Arabic study I'll be fluent enough to apply for some kind of translator job, which generally pay well.

The CIA has a notoriously stringent selection process. Many applicants are so embittered by the end of it that their whole perception of 3 letter agencies changes for the worse. Works for some people but not everyone.

Of course if I got to do cool guy shit outside of their bureaucratic temple of doom cubicles (like Special Activities Division) I'd definitely be interested. That, however, usually requires an extensive military background in special operations.

Agastya,

Working in the intelligence world can be of great value. Also, you don't need to be gay as someone else suggested. And there's no problem with seeking advice on here. The CIA goes to universities and grad schools in DC (and other places) all the time for info sessions. That's not too different from what you are doing here.

Like most good jobs, it comes down to fit, competence, and a bit of luck.

I would suggest you do the following, given what you have already written:

1. Really master Arabic (there's a difference between proficiency and fluency. Try to get closer to the latter. That's where the real value is).

2. Read vociferously on the Middle East since that's the region you seem to be interested in. Not just the news, not just RVF (much of the analysis on Middle East threads is wrong), but works of history, philosophy, and political science. You need to get that region and its culture in your DNA.

3. Read a ton of stuff about the intelligence world. Not only the juicy fiction stuff but also academic works. There's a lot of work done in political science and international relations on this. I had a bibliography on intelligence that I will try to locate (I think it is on my old computer).

4. Consider going to for an MA in International Affairs (SAIS, Georgetown would be good options) but only if you don't have to take on a lot of debt. These programs have become very expensive.

5. I've read your posts in the past and you seem like an intelligent guy. I think you can move beyond a translator's job and you can get into the higher echelons of these places if you work hard and get lucky.

6. Don't do drugs. They always test and it is automatic disqualification.

7. Stay in shape.

8. Absolutely no crimes. Parking tickets are okay.

Women are much more to deferent to authority than men. It's no coincidence that women are actively sought for government positions especially those where abuse of power is very likely.
