Hey guys,

One thing that always annoys me in some clubs is the insane music volume. Especially on the dance floor. Does any of you use any sort of protection? I don't do night game that much, but if I were gonna do this 3-4 times a week, I would definitely want some sort of earplugs. I would feel really lame wearing them though...

Use silicone earplugs like the ones in the picture, then the music doesn't get so distorted and you can hear what people say, compared to normal foam earplugs.

I used to roll with http://www.earpeace.com/. They are inconspicuous and limit the volume just enough.

This thread exemplifies why I love this forum. In nearly all music venues I've been to, or bars/clubs as well, I've heard all kinds of negative feedback and ridicule from people who think that's it's weird that I'm wearing ear plugs (or in many cases for bars/clubs that I fashion my own ear plugs out of paper to at least have some protection). Yet here, every response has been a solution and there's not one single question as to why you would want to protect your hearing. Further, I've now been exposed to products which are probably better than any of the earplugs I'm currently using which I can probably carry anytime I go out and have a better chance of hearing people over my current solution(s).

My only other comment is that the most damaging spectrum for your hearing is the treble/high pitched sounds. There's many places that have loud music but the treble isn't out of control and there's plenty more places with the overall music not crazy loud but the gain is so high on the treble that my ears hurt just getting near to stepping in the place. I avoid those places like the plague or wear earplugs. I'd much rather lose out on a club slut vs. my hearing long-term.

Don't have them myself but I've been looking at getting some ETY Plugs by Etymotic. According to the technical specification:

I use cotton/beeswax from http://www.earplugsonline.com. Excellent for sound and comfort, in clubs and around city. Free shipping. Real peace and quiet can be attained with shooter's earmuffs over the earplugs. People probably assume I am playing an iPod.

This part of Philippines has no laws against noise. Living in the city, I am surrounded by howling dogs. A filipino might silence his dog, but very rarely. I have only seen that happen once, in a restaurant.
On the streets, we have thousands of motorcycles running without mufflers. Mufflers are not required outside of Manila and Cebu, so about 25% have been removed or rodded out. This boosts power by reducing exhaust backpressure. The louder the better.
Karaoke is a local favorite, preferred at full volume from 7 pm to 2 am. Hearing protection is a good idea at all our karaoke clubs and all the dances in the park.
If not for abundant sweet young pussy, I would not come here.

I had mz earplugs custom made for my ear lobe and ear canal from some type of silicone or rubber, they are very comfortable, hard to notice, you can also go through that route, although I expect that kind of thing to be more expensive in EU.

@FilipSRB: I know about those, a lot of my colleagues have them at work. They're anywhere from €100 to €200 from what I hear. Just for clubbing, I'm probably gonna go for something cheaper just because I don't need them to be an absolutely perfect fit. I don't stay in the club for 12 hours a day

@AneroidOcean: I agree with you and if you think about it, it makes sense. In general, people on this forum seem to have made a strong commitment to improve their lives and health can't be overlooked in that regard. I'd happily trade all my club-lays for good hearing throughout my life. With that said, the bright orange foam ones look a bit silly and I'd much rather not be "the earplugs guy". Thankfully, there are many solutions here.

To me it seems like there's an extremely simple solution to this issue.

Don't go to clubs.

There are plenty of other types of venues you can go to, even at night, if you don't want your eardrums blasted. Personally, I find the type of club where this would be necessary is an overrated experience as it is.

I don't go to clubs but I use those when I am around my buddies subwoofers. They're small and hard to notice. They can be a little difficult to get in at first but they get easier with time.

If you want maximum protect for an extremely loud event I'd go with these. If some chick asks why you're wearing hearing protection im sure you can think of something to explain it that will also be a DHV. There better options out there like getting them custom made from an audiologist but the solutions I mentioned are fast and simple. Good luck with what you decide.

Don't ever neglect you're hearing to bang some 6 and I'd recommend getting a hearing exam once a year so you have a baseline.

If you want the best of the best, meaning the best protection and still being able to enjoy the music and have a normal conversation, search for otoplastics. They need to be custom fitted and will be pricey. I think they'll set you back around $80 (don't know exactly, my employer at the time supplied me with them).

It's worth it though. They fit like a glove and have a membrane that filters only the highest volume sounds. You'll be surprised by your new ability to clearly hear people talk across the dancefloor.
