I mean, who knew that a country with the most heterogeneous population on Earth (and well over 800 languages spoken), could be so violent? Go figure.

This place really seems off the charts in terms of violence, at least from what the posters here are describing. Certain cities in the U.S, Mexico, or where have you might have incredibly high murder rates in specific areas, but the violence in PNG seems to be dispersed across the country? You can't use your cell phone in the street without someone stealing it? What the fuck?

Still would absolutely go for the nature at the very least.

I wonder if the Indonesian side of the island (Irian Jaya) is as fucked up as Papua itself?

I admit that part of the reason I want to go is because I grew up playing Carmen Sandiego - the original DOS version - and Port Moresby was one of the cities you could fly to.

Well so far its been a bitch even getting there. Yesterday I took a 15 hour flight from the States to Hong Kong, only to find out my bags wouldn't be checking through all the way to PNG. As a results had to go through immigration/customs which caused me to miss my flight.

Thats unfortunate. Seems like unexpected complications are par for the course for these sorts of destinations. Thanks for the update, would love to hear your experiences once you arrive.
