Hey Roccker, loving your diary.
Your stories are very real, and a great reference for any other guys thinking about a first visit to Manila.

A prediction from me:
After you return home, your first thoughts will be "whew, that was a big job, but I got through it ok".
But after a while you will forget about the time you were sick and the tedious logistics, and think about returning.
Then you will start to think "how can I do it better next time?".
And you may think "I wish that I had visited some more places, so I have a better idea where I might like to stay next time".

So again I suggest that at the very least you follow my suggestion in post 46, and look around a bit more in your last few days there.

My favorites were 11 14 15 17 22. I plan to meet all of them again and perhaps doing a bit more than just going to condo.

I agree with Antipodean, after a few months back home you may begin to miss Phils. Sure, it is safe and clean back home, but it's just not the same. They probably scammed you on the price. This is common in the 3rd world. If you had questioned them they'd have probably shown you a very expensive bottle when in reality they gave you the cheapest one they had. Best practice is to ask for a specific alcohol brand that way you can have an idea of how much it will cost and / or request a menu. Every place has a menu. Many won't want to give it to you but they all have one.

I'd be shocked if any single drink costs 10+ Euros anywhere in the Phillipines outside of perhaps a 5* hotel.

Keep in mind that some places in Makati/The Fort are playgrounds for the upper class in Phil. Wouldn't surprise me if they'd be willing to pay higher prices in order to keep 'a certain crowd' out of their watering hole.

Same may apply for parts of Boracay and Palawan. A few years ago, I was in Boracay walking along the south side of white beach near Osom bar and my girl at the time claimed to have seen Anne Curtis.

Go to Airbnb and search the different areas to make a direct comparison. Splitting a unit with someone else can halve the price sometimes. Staying longer term can drop the price too. The following are ballparks for condo units.

Makati/Greenbelt and the Fort will tend to have more expensive food and drinks available if you want that, but they also have cafes, bars, restaurants, supermarkets with the same prices as everywhere else.
Remember, many of these places are national chains with standard pricing.

Transport costs are the same.

The only places I remembered seeing raised food prices across the board were secluded areas, especially islands. I was at Arecife island off Puerto Princessa and prices were at least 30% marked up. Considering they have to import everything, I thought that was pretty reasonable.

QC far far cheaper to live than both Makati and the Fort

As far as comparing Makati to the Fort, I would say that better value is to be had in Makati. Tons more bars offering Happy Hour deals in Makati, more options for Supermarkets, i.e Rustans, Landmark, Cash n Carry.

I personally think the Fort is sterile and lacks atmosphere, no sense of community...not for me, give me the hustle and bustle of Makati Ave, Ayala Ave, Jupiter Street, Paseo de Roxas anytime

And if you want to pay upwards of P500 a drink hit places like Prive....complete rip off....I can avail of an open bar for 3 hours in a 5 star hotel in Makati for P695......
