Yes, definitely. Also keep in mind, if you're ever put in a position where they want to question you, they will try to put you in the most disoriented state possible. Knocking on your door at 5am or 11pm hoping that you're just waking up and not fully alert yet. They're gonna try to disarm your logical brain and you'll be pumped full of adrenaline with your mind going "wtf is going on?!" You'll notice their loaded guns holstered and you'll want them to see you as a likeable guy.

Your instinct is to want to talk with them to disarm any confusion they might have. You have to fight that instinct. Don't be surprised that despite knowing it deep down, you won't be able to utter something as complex as "I respectfully decline to answer any questions." If you can't say anything else, just say something simple as "Lawyer" until your senses come back.

Here's the story:

Just happened to me the other day. I invited this girl to a beach fire with a few of my friends for a chilled out night. We're having a good time, she's sitting next to me slightly separated from the rest of the group. In hindsight, I should have:
-Kept escalating. She was still being warm to me when she said it, and wasn't physically rejecting me.
- Said something like, 'I don't want to stop (touching you), but if I'm making you uncomfortable I will.'
- Never let it get to this limbo point, I should have escalated enough the first time I met her to get the boyfriend card before spending more time together. As someone else said in this thread, I was stuck in conversation-land before this night.

Anyone have other thoughts on what I should have done?
