Aging Spain passes population milestone as deaths surpass births

Spain's population has been shrinking since 2012 due to net migration as recession and high unemployment encouraged people to seek better prospects abroad. Demographers say the crossover of the birth and death rates could accelerate the decline.

An exodus from the countryside has also left many small villages abandoned or with shrinking elderly populations.

Spain, one of many European countries facing a shrinking workforce and increasing burdens on its social security system, has the 10th oldest population in the world, with an average age of 43.2 years.

That is projected to move up to fourth oldest, with an average age of 50.1 years, by 2030, according to a United Nations report in July.

The country's large elderly population could play a significant role in the Dec. 20 general election, for which center-right Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has courted old people's votes by protecting pensions.

Europe is the continent most affected by an aging population. The U.N. said 34 percent of its population would be over 60 years old by 2050.

Increased immigration could help reverse the trend and hundreds of thousands of people fleeing Syria and other war-torn states have been flocking toward Europe. The European Union struggled to agree a plan to share out just 120,000 of them.

This is not a "Spain" issue. It's a Western Europe issue, maybe even a "West" issue as a whole. Encouraging immigration would most likely not be enough.

We must change the system and prepare the transition. This has to be it for the welfare state.

If we are to arbitrarily add third world migrants then (not talking about Polish) ... Frankly I do not see where it would improve, they would burded the system more than actually improving it, and the jobs they could potentially do are increasingly scarce, too.

This has only been an issue for a few decades. Perhaps that qualifies as 'long', but declining birth rates only began with the transition to democracy and accession to the EU and NATO. Before the last generation or two families would have 5+ surviving kids. Today you rarely see more than two.

What's in store?
In brief, the Re-re-conquista.

A small tangent: have you ever wondered why Al-Qaeda chose the date of 11 September as the operational date for their plan to bring down the World Trade Centre? It was not to provide the media with the pithy shorthand of 9/11, I assure you.

It was chosen because another rather important event took place on 11 September, 1683: the Battle of Vienna, at which (after a dogged defence of the city by its inhabitants) the Turkish horde before the gates was routed by a Catholic army led by Jan Sobieski. Radical Islam sees itself as locked in endless combat with the West. That date was chosen to 'avenge' the loss at Vienna.

The Spanish Reconquista was also a long war with Islam, taking roughly seven hundred years, ending (coincidentally) in 1492 when the Muslims lost Granada. And while it pains me to say it, the Spaniards and Portugese did not fuck around with tolerance or attempting a gentle peace once the Muslims had been pushed out: there followed a long religious purge of forced conversions to Christianity or outright expulsion of Muslims from Iberia. This purge led into the Spanish Inquisition, which was similarly an attempt at rooting out crypto-Judaism in the Spanish population and which was basically forced onto the Papacy of the time. But its result was also a deeply Catholic country with no significant Islamic or Jewish populations in it for centuries. (Today there's roughly 3-4% of the population who is Islamic in Spain.)

The Reconquista was, to my mind, the only successful Christian crusade-ish endeavour ever carried out. Every other Crusade into Muslim lands failed mainly because the Christians were surrounded by hostile forces and were basically a small strip of land in Palestine. Spain was something different. And the Reconquista only worked because the Christians in Spain were prepared to dig in and fight the long war, and because that was roughly the last time a Christian nation dealt with Islam on roughly the same terms as Islam prefers to deal with its conquered enemies. There are still statues, in Portugal, of Gerald the Fearless holding up the decapitated head of a Moor.

The main point being: don't imagine that Islam has forgotten that humiliation, or that it won't try and take Spain back somewhere down the line, maybe soon down the line. That will all be seen as part of the "Caliphate to be restored", and there will be a horrible, horrible bloodletting there when it happens. As 9/11 tells us: Islam never forgets, and we should not either. Shit, I'm amazed there haven't been any Islamic bombings in Warsaw against some of Jan Sobieski's memorials ... although I guess that's a matter of 'watch this space'.

This thread reminded me of this article on refugees from a month ago that made me chuckle for its stupidity. The article is from El Pais, the biggest newspaper in the country and not some 'alternative media' source that some would instantly discredit.

This was published before the Paris attacks.

The Russians under Ivan the Terrible conquered and settled much of the area held by the muslim volga tatars with russians and his successors repopulated eastern and southern ukraine along with the pontic steppe as well as well as freeing georgia and armenia while expelling many of the muslim circassians and azeris, returning these areas to christian demographic majority. The Ethiopian Amhara reconquered many of the southern regions back from the muslim oromo and freed Eritrea from Ottoman-Egyptian Rule, establishing a large christian state again in the form of the Ethiopian empire. Other than that, there are no real examples of large scale reconquista, except for maybe Stalin's purges of minorities, which concidentally, happened to further increase the demographic dominance of russians throughout the USSR and Georgians in the Caucasus, since Stalin was extremely lenient towards those groups and towards the Georgian SSR. Stalin even tried to annex Armenia and some of the smaller Caucasian polities into the Georgian SSR by deporting their populations to Siberia.

Since Franco's death, Spain went from a Catholic fundamentalist dictatorship where wives loyally served their husbands and family, to a feminist dystopia now on par with Sweden.

Jokes aside, the most irritating thing about the 1st world birth problem is that no one talks about solutions. For everything else, everyone is pretty opinionated. But they just say "mmm yeah there is a birth problem", and leave it at that.

It's actually all pretty basic stuff, so low birth rates aren't a mystery, they are deliberately self-inflicted.

Spain need simply do the following:
- Expect and demand that their daughters get married by 20
- Publically call 25+ unmarried women 'leftovers'
- Declare virgin women to be more valuable that non-virgins (so women 'spend themselves wisely')
- Bestow awards on men and women with large families (as Russia is now doing)
- Rebalance marriage law to treat men and women equally
- Socially shame those who use contraceptives
- Add a hereditary component to parliament
- Erradicate all welfare

Do all that and I can guarantee no more birth problems.
