I have an idea as a musician and life long music fan. Having enjoyed the RVF movie and book clubs, is there any interest in an RVF album club?? The idea is to nominate a number of classic albums from various music genres per month. People listen to these and discuss. This will be a great opportunity to listen to music you might be unaware of. I would start by suggesting a list of some classic rock and metal albums. Then blues albums, even quality pop and prog rock and classical music.

So- any takers??

Sounds like a great idea! I had been thinking of starting a record collectors thread, but this might be just as well. Unfortunately, I think there's another thread like this somewhere on the forum, so you might want to look into that first.

Agreed, if someone can show this is a dupe, then please mods, lock or delete. If not I'll list five albums to listen to, all from youtube, and we can discuss them.

Nothing personal, but it isn't a great idea. Music is much more personal to people than movies and books.

I also started a music exchange thread where people could share different kinds of music. Maybe people don't like Jeff Beck as much as I do and got turned off by it.

I think the reason that thread didn't take off is because people don't generally care enough to listen to a band just because one person recommended them. They normally need a bit more reason to check them out. No offense Polymath, I'm one of those people and I know many other people are also.

Knowing that you're listening to one of the defining, and classic albums of the genre is one good reason to listen to an album.

I'm just wondering how this idea would work with so many genres of music. I think 'rock and metal' is way too vague. No way will people ever agree on five or even fifty classic albums. Maybe if it was split into smaller subgenres then it might work.

But then that creates the problem of loads of genres, loads of albums and it wouldn't work as a monthly album club. The only way I see it working is just as a list of classic albums from each genre of music. Rock and metal could be split up into

Early Rock and Roll: 50s and 60s.
Classic Rock: 60's and 70s.
Classic Heavy Metal: 70s, 80s.
Thrash Metal
Death Metal
Black Metal
Punk/Hardcore
'Alternative' rock 90s, 2000s
etc, etc.

I know some of these names are a bit lame, but these are just rough classifications to split music up by time period as well as genre. 'Alternative' rock is just meant to include all the rock music from the 90s onward, grunge, post-rock, whatever you want to call it.

I haven't even got started with the jazz, blues, classical and other types of music yet..

Most of the music I listen to is pretty old (pre-1980s rock mostly), and I'm interested in discovering newer stuff that isn't your typical top 40 stuff. Is a "classic" designation a must for nominated albums?

I'm down. What 5 albums would you suggest to start, Guitarman? Will it be only you deciding, or will submissions be voted on? Or perhaps, person #1 picks 5 one week, #2 picks the next week, and so on?

Ok, there seems to be some interest, so I'll give it a go. I will look through my vinyl collection tonight and post give classic, non top 40 albums from the early 1970's. 1970 -1975 to be precise, the pre punk era. I will also post ( if allowed by RVF) you tube links so anyone can listen to the album.

Only condition is that if you want to participate you have to listen to the album at least five times. I find that non top 40 classic rock / metal being more original than commercial in composition takes five listens. First listen you think " what the hell is this" then after five listens over the course of a few days " this is great!".

I love music that grows on you rather than being instant. In my opinion the quality of the music is deeper and more original.

After posting the first five choices an enthusiastic poster on this thread can suggest another five for January. I'd suggest downloading mp3 of the albums and listening on headphones during your commute or in the car. And as requested by Urobic, I'll include one Rush album!
