Question Question about countries views on Americans
I brought this up a while back in a thread but only got one response. Do other countries think America is a black and white country? As in there's only blacks and whites living here. My uncle, who is very hispanic looking, went to Germany about 10 yrs ago and said he was treated very good but they refused to believe he was American. It would make sense since American shows and Hollywood movies don't show anyone else for the most part.

Man,I think a guy must be very dumb and neutered culturally to think that America is only black and white."Everybody" knows (or should) that the US is a multicultural and multiracial country.

I hate to say that, but Americans often are the guys who don't know shit about other countries.I have friends who went to the US in Internship programs and heard things like: "There are cities with cars and streets in Brazil ? Do you guys have TV and Internet ? How can you be Brazilian if you are white ?Are you from Brazil?Great, I'm looking forward to visit Buenos Aires." Seriously.

That was before, now everyone knows that the US is White, Black, Hispanic and Asian.

I think that a lot of Americans are pretty ignorant geographicaly.

They asked me if I know how to use a microwave, A MICROWAVE.

Once I found a guy in Mexico that asked me where ARGENTINA was, he thought it was driving distance. A lot of americans think that south of the border everything is Mexico.

They also think that españoles are mexicans, they don't believe that there's a country in europe that speaks spanish.

So, as an American I might score easy points for being knowledgeable? I'm the kid who read the entire encyclopedia set by age eight. I come equipped with astonishingly broad general knowledge.

The Latinos know Hispanics are up in the states; nearly everyone knows someone who moved there.

I also find the Europeans here are very aware that LA, Texas, and Miami have a lot of Latinos. These days Europe has a lot more ethnic diversity as well.

Erm, what country do they belive the Spanish language originated in exactly?

And if they think it's Mexico then why do they think the language is called Spanish?

RE: Question about countries views on Americans
There's an american woman in one of the groups I'm member of in FB who wrote that "she saw a price in a currency she doesn't understand and has never seen" referring to the British Pound. She even went as far as asking "which country's currency is that" after someone told her it was the British Pound. No, she's not a teenager, but a grown woman who's a business leader in her community. I couldn't believe it and I wasn't sure whether she was serious or just joking.
Another staggering stat is that there are about 30 or 40 million americans who don't have a passport. And when the average Joe or Joette from say Nashville or some hole in redneck territory goes overseas, it's obvious and they're the ones perpetuating the stereotyped image of the ugly, ignorant, loud and obnoxious american who complain why people in other countries do not speak "American". Unreal. To be fair to them, their ignorance is not entirely their fault as the american media doesn't really encourage learning about the world...but that's a nother story...

RE: Question about countries views on Americans
To add to the laughable examples of ingorance of some people, the other night, i was with a buddy of mine at a bar chilling and they were showing the Gold Cup match between Guadeloupe and Canada and some dude asked loudly "what is Guadeloupe? is that a country? since when? seems like they're creating a new country every day." My friend turned around to answer his question and asked him, where he's from and he yelled, "YNC baby". Said it all...
