I would advise Estonia, high degree of economic liberty which does float my boat. A more common destination among forum members is Poland, which is not doing too bad either I believe.

"Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin. Real love involves real hatred: whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the sellers from temples has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth."

I am citizen of one of those countries, and honestly don't see the point in comparing them based on economy.
They are equally shitty, more less.

If you want to do business there, look at the population size and average income, or specific industries you are interested in.

There is a reason economy is bad here, and you cannot just compare numbers to comprehend the problems we have.

corruption, red tape.. MASSIVE bureaucracy, government not making any real effort to ease doing business, etc.
in Croatia until 2012 you couldn't even receive money via PayPal.

RE: Country with the best economy in Eastern Europe: Comparison of 9 countries
In Poland, we live in kind of economical paranoia. Actual government is called by themselves a liberal party, but they increase number of clerks in 8 years above 150 000. After 1990 almost all of state companies/factories were closed and/or privatased but Taxes grow, moreover there is very weak social support comparing to countries on left side of Elba River and very weak acces to free market. Most of factories already are assembly plants, which did not create anything. If you are emploee of huge foreign company or you owe it, you are priviliged becuse there is almost 100% probability that you will pay very small taxes. Reason of this kind of issues, i think this statement will be on behalf of all eastern and central european countries, is that almost all the time after 1990 post - communists or people controled by them were on charge. Another important factor is that from mid 80's our transformation to ,,capitalism'' were prepared and that communist parties had strange coalition of interests with banks and big international companies (now you know why western companies are paying low taxes and Donald Tusk became president of European Council). So after 1990 the richest and most influential people were post - communists, who didn't work hard for they money, but steal them by so called ,,privatisation'' which makes access to market a lot easier for western companies. Those post communist establishment who is now in charge, don't have any interest in allow people to establish new companies and create welfare. I hope that this post clear some things for those who ask about reasons.

P.S.: In one week we have election in Poland and I hope so that we will start clean this shit Whip

GDP per capita has always been a bullshit statistic.

It's even more useless when you consider that one of the main criticism is that it does not take into account illegal or underground activity.

You know how much shit goes off the books in Poland? I know other countries probably have a huge underground economy too. But really with so much underground, GDP isn't going to be anything near accurate.

Important is the currency of the country, EURO or local one, it has a large impact the first 5 years when such a country adapts EURO, like Lithuania this year for example.

It depends.. do you want to live there long term or just visit for a week?

For longer term, good rule of thumb would be capital cities (Budapest, Prague, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Warsaw, Moscow/St. Petersburg..)..

Quality of life is in reality only limited by the income of locals.
Though, job market and education suck terribly (maybe few top universities, if any?).

Overall, the best place to be in eastern europe is probably Prague, Czech Republic.
Super low unemployment rate, tons of history, loads of tourists, located in the center of Europe..

By all cost avoid small towns in eastern europe, because slavic aren't multicultural.. anyone not local is going to have hard time integrating, and on top of that there isn't any real incentive to try to integrate.

In large cities you have expats, business community etc. so you can have a solid social life there.

micky, in terms of what Czech Republic is better than Slovenia (Ljubljana) and Estonia (Tallinn) besides touristic issues? I mean real life level of locals, can they allow themselves to eat quality ecological food, allow themselves to have vacation near sea twice per year, etc? Do people from Czech Republic have more opportunities for such benefits than people from Slovenia and Estonia? Please explain.

Nice stats, Vanguard.

I'd add two key metrics:

* Cost of living. This could easily be calculated by dividing GDP per capita at nominal rates by GDP per capita based on purchasing power parity (PPP). A higher number implies higher cost.

* Some measure of recent growth (e.g., average annual GDP growth over last five years). A shrinking economy and a fast-growing economy are very different, even if their GDP per capita is similar. Poland, for example, has been doing pretty well lately.

Exclamation RE: Country with the best economy in Eastern Europe: Comparison of 9 countries
Hello! Look at this 2015 Global Hunger Index: http://ghi.ifpri.org/
So, according to IFPRI's list of countries, 5 out of 9 countries should be extracted from your list as poor. They are Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia.
And so, 4 countries should be left on your list. They are Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia.
What surprised me the most while reading this thread is that no one has mentioned Hungary as an industrialized country and that Hungarian economy is better & stronger than Croatian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Slovakian!

With the election of PiS's supermajority in Poland a lot of investors are getting cold feet. Honestly Eastern Europe only has human capital (knowledge) and low costs as a comparative advantage. With the brain drain only getting larger and larger this is an extremely unsustainable and retarded economic model that fails it's own citizenry in terms of their needs by not prioritizing national champions or home grown innovation that isn't imported from the west. This will only increase the one way traffic across the channel. Best to have an internet gig or work for a large multinational and not be too reliant on the local economy.

You need to explain your situation for anyone to provide useful infromation. What sector is your business involved in, does it rely on the local market, do you require financing, where is it headquartered.

And watch the attitude. You are being very demanding for someone with 6 posts.

RE: Country with the best economy in Eastern Europe: Comparison of 9 countries
In which of the following countries are blonde girls most attracted to men who eat watermelons? Please list the countries in order of pulling power gained per kilogram of watermelon eaten. Also indicate the average number of virgins deflowered per 100 watermelons consumed annually per capita, accurate to four decimal places.

1) Croatia
2) Czech Republic
3) Estonia
4) Hungary
5) Latvia
6) Lithuania
7) Poland
8) Slovakia
9) Slovenia

... it's the "ranking" troll. He's obsessed with rankings of Central/Eastern-European countries by blondes/legs/teeth/average salary/faces/etc. He's been asking for those lists for over two years already. For example, his threads about teeth: /thread-45702.html and Germanic-looking women: /thread-34121.html

WTF?
