Facing political pressure as a result of statements by US officials, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has taken an increasingly hard public line on foreign forces in Iraq, terming the deployment of ground combat forces a "hostile act".

"We have confirmation that Turkish forces, numbering about one armoured regiment with a number of tanks and artillery, entered Iraqi territory... allegedly to train Iraqi groups, without a request or authorisation from Iraqi federal authorities," it said.

The deployment "is considered a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty," it added.

A local Kurdish commander described the deployment as a routine rotation by Turkish trainers, but a subsequent statement by the Kurdish regional government pointed to increased Turkish activity.



Mosul, which is predominantly Sunni Arab, is a key centre of IS's self-proclaimed "caliphate", but an operation to retake the city remains a distant prospect.

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet said that Ankara was "establishing a base in the Bashiqa region of Mosul with 600 soldiers".

Davutoglu denied that, saying: "This is not a new camp."

Rather, it is a pre-existing "training facility established to support local volunteer forces' fight against terrorism", set up in coordination with the Iraqi defence ministry, he said.

Ankara's critics have repeatedly questioned Turkey's commitment to the war against IS, accusing it of being more interested in attacking the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which it has repeatedly bombed in Iraq.

Iraqi Kurdish regional president Massud Barzani sees the PKK, which is also a key player in the anti-jihadist effort, as a rival in the Kurdish world.

The Kurdish region is politically divided and competing factions have often used the war on IS to advance party agendas.



Abadi has repeatedly said Iraq needs all the help it can get to fight IS, but he is also walking a fine line between receiving that support and projecting sovereignty.

The Turkish deployment is just the latest in a series of challenges over the past week that have pushed him to take a hard line on foreign forces helping Iraq against IS, which overran large parts of the country last year.

Calls from two American senators for the number of US troops in Iraq to be tripled, combined with Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter's announcement that Washington would send a special forces contingent to fight IS in Iraq and Syria, put Abadi under heavy pressure.

Shiite paramilitary forces dominated by Iran-backed militias came out strongly against the US, and Abadi issued his own series of increasingly strident statements about foreign forces.

Some heartwarming news ... Besieged soldiers meeting their families for the first time in almost 3 years!

About 2 weeks ago, thanks to Russian Air support the Syrian Army was able to liberate the Kwereis Airbase just east of Aleppo. The Airbase was besieged by first the rebels and then ISIS for 2 and a half years (right around the time i started following this war). The Air-base was soon rendered non-functional due to consistent shelling.

These guys went through living hell. The only way they could be supplied was by in-accurate air drops. On top of running low on ammo, medical supplies and living off one meal a day ... they were being attacked by ISIS almost daily. Non-stop, by day , by night and by large suicide VBIED's intended on breaking their defenses.

ISIS actually entered the airbase a couple of times and these guys drove them off hand-to-hand with revolvers and knives. In the beginning, it was estimated there were about 1000-1200 soldiers and airmen inside.

Only 268 made it back!!

If these guys were American, they would have already been offered movie and book deals.

Watch them meet their families who by the way had no idea if theirs sons and husbands were dead or alive until like 3 days before the homecoming. I almost shed man-tears watching this.

I hope these guys get a nice and long all expenses paid vacation on the Mediterranean coast. Having said that ... I can't help but envy these faggots since brotherhoods forged in wartimes like this are unbreakable and last a lifetime. Wouldn't be surprised if some of these guys officially adopted the children of their fallen comrades.

Let us not forget that what Russia and President Assad are proposing is a ceasefire between Assad and those fighting him, and the formation of a coalition of all countries currently involved to defeat ISIS once and for all. Then after ISIS is defeated, that there be UN monitored and verified elections also including the diaspora so that the Syrian people can democratically elect the country's leadership.

The US, along with it the UK, France, Germany, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia flatly refuse these proposals as it means that Assad's name will be on the ballot paper.

NATO really is a pack of duplicitous bastards.

Every time the Kurds are at the point of cutting Daesh's oil supply lines, Turkey magically appears as the Jihad genie to push the Kurds back.

Everyone knows that ever since the US started its air-strikes, the balance of the war turned to Daesh's favour but this has largely been reversed by Russia's far more modest levels of bombing.

I follow RT as my main source of news, and since the Paris attacks I've noticed something very strange in their reporting of especially muslims and "refugees".

Over the last 2-3 days, they've had articles/videos:
1) "Attempted Murder" by German attacking refugee shelter
2) Rising Islamophobia in London
3) Mistaking Quran/Bible verses social experiment in Amsterdam
4) "Future President ?" / "'French Front National victory a warning to rest of Europe'" After French election result (Which was weird since Putin and Le Pen are on good terms)
and a few more examples of islam-sympethizing / Passive-aggressive digs at Europeans against the invasion. Meanwhile, zero mention of reverse crimes/troubles...they used to be a lot more in balance.

RT wasn't like this at all prior to Paris attacks, and I am trying to understand what is the purpose of these sort of reports, seeing as RT is very pro-Kremlin and usually the anti-MSM. The only reason I can think of, is that they want to attract Muslims and their Western sympathizers who think the Western Media are against them (LOL), to their side and increase audience, but it's still strange.

Babyboomers who are not ignorant politicians don't believe in Russia being a paper tiger. My parents remember the cold war days and they see striking similarities with then and now.

The only difference being is that we are open to attack because our supposedly biggest ally, the US, is inciting mass violence across the globe.

Only the young believe in fairy tales, where Russian ordnance cannot reach European cities. Russia would be hard-pressed to do such a thing because lets face it, the Europeans are friendly and welcoming of Russia in modern times and throughout history.

Their reporting on Russia's fight against ISIS is still top notch and very detailed and I've noticed have awakened many Americans/Canadians to the lies that are spouted in MSM here every day.

Russia Today is a propaganda piece. That doesn't mean it isn't worth watching or that CNN/FOX/NBC are better, because they are not, but it does mean that like Western media like to denigrate Russia, so does Russia Today if they can find something which can show issues.

Particularly because Putin has repeatedly humble bragged about how well he and Russia's muslims get along, particularly the Chechens. Putin is pragmatic and practical and wants to be seen as such. He wants to show Europeans, how poor their leaders are at dealing with muslims for example.

Another thing that can explain the very liberal slant of RT, and I believe this to be just as important, is that the journalists they have are American and European, not Russian. Consider yourself what kind of person would willingly and openly work for a 'hostile power'? Classic conservatives? Nope. Libertarian and liberal yep.

The kind of reporter who would want to work for Russia Today needs to be a special breed, someone who probably has some pretty strong convictions about 'peace love harmony'.

Lastly, Russia full well understands that liberalism is the language of the European youth. They speak a language that the young understand, then inject some of their more important viewpoints on Ukraine and Syria for example.

I find that alternative new sources altogether, for example, like the Unz Review with it's multiple different high quality alt left and right blogs and columnists or Zerohedge, offer the best analysis of news, in conjunction with mainstream news sources that are paid for corporations or state governments. That being said, even on these sites, many are sympathetic to Putin, not buying into the normal media kool-aid, but without having the overly weird liberal and minority stuff that RT sometimes has or vatnik like views of Russia's capabilities.
