Gents: If you want to give American westerns at their best an honest try, you can't really go wrong with anything by director John Ford. (Ford's genius extends far beyond westerns, but sticking to the topic at hand for now...)

Here are some of my Ford favorites --

Stagecoach (1939)
My Darling Clementine (1946)
Fort Apache (1948)
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949)
Rio Grande (1950)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Anthony Mann is another legendary director of American westerns.

A few Mann classics --

Winchester ’73 (1950)
Bend of the River (1952)
The Far Country (1954)
The Man from Laramie (1955)
The Last Frontier (1955)

Another of my personal favorite Westerns (and indeed flicks) of all time is Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo (1959).

The Delmer Daves original 3:10 to Yuma (1957), not the shitty 2007 remake, is also a great and memorable film.

As far as recent Westerns are concerned, I believe a great many RVFers would really love the HBO production The Jack Bull (1999), directed by John Badham and starring John Cusack.

The Ranown cycle: a series of movies directed by Budd Boetticher, starring Randolph Scott, and written by Burt Kennedy.

The best of the bunch is Seven Men From Now, with Ride Lonesome a close second.

Great Thread. I grew up watching random westerns on TV but eventually stopped caring. Got back into the genre after a couple days watching the Fistful of Dollars trilogy. This thread is just what I need when a Western strikes my fancy.

One film that qualifies as a western that is a bit strange but right up there with the classics is Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller. It's about a degenerate (Warren Beatty) setting up a whorehouse in a seedy old west frontier town. Plus it's an Altman film and Altman is a badass. It's violent, unconventional, and surprising.


Sergio Leone's Once upon a time in the West is a classic too.


I also recommend The Good, The Bad, the Weird This is a Korean western and an homage to Leone's stuff. It's a pretty fun film.

I'm a big fan of Open Range - Duvall is great as usual and Costner who I normally hate, is OK too. And it's probably got the greatest gunfight ever.

I also really enjoyed the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit.

The Magnificent Seven was good, and I've enjoyed Eastwood's older westerns too.
