If you want to rant, go ahead. However you are not that important for the administrators or whoever at your university to give a shit about. Perhaps the problem isn't them it's you? Ever consider that?

The work environment outside of certain sectors like oil and gas in boom times is quite inflexible and moves at a very, very slow pace compared to other countries. And I have worked in several.

Frankly, Britain has the most professional and reasonable recruitment environment I have encountered so far. So moving from Britain to Canada would be quite a professional culture shock. It's not that Canada is a "bad" country. It just is what it is. Companies outside of boom industries/times have a fairly inefficient way of hiring staff from a Brits perspective.

I have Brit friends in Canada who have also had big problems finding work. One girl in particular had massive trouble finding work in finance. She was repeatedly asked about her "Canadian experience". Now this girl had several years professional experience with investment banks in the City. But banks in Canada didn't want to hear about it. They only wanted to know about Canadian experience. If she had had experience as an Accounts Clerk at a fertilizer supplier in Winnipeg to banks in Vancouver it would have counted for more than her experience in the City. Despite London being the financial capital of, you know, the world...

But Canada is what it is. Nobody moves there to advance their career. It's more of a lifestyle destination. If you are expecting London style salaries and professional working environment in Canada, even in a big city like Vancouver, you are likely to be sorely disappointed.

Lastly. If you have Canadian citizenship "getting into" the US is much easier. Look up the T1 visa scheme for Nafta country professionals.

Bad Hussar nailed it. No one cares here if you have studied at Oxford or Cambridge university, they care about your experience in the country.

I think the underlying factor is that there isn't enough decent jobs to be had, so there is a lot of BS and screening taking place.

Countries like the UK and the USA have a shortage in skilled workers for certain sectors.

In Canada, (Toronto) I know many people making six figures and they haven't completed a post high school education.

I myself am strongly debating moving back to the UK.

I work with companies in the technology sector, and I can tell you for a fact that there is a serious dearth of talent in Toronto. If you have any sort of marketable skills, front end development, Javascript, Python, Ruby, mobile frameworks etc.. you can pretty much walk into a job. Canadian experience or not.

In fact, many people might not know this, but from federal programs, to provincial credits, Canada has very good incentives for startups and tech companies. If you are a technology entrepreneur, Canada is one of the best places to set up. The government sends you back in cash, almost 70% of the money you spend on salaries, whether you make a profit or not. If anybody wants more details about this feel free to PM me.

OP, I had a similar experience in moving to Toronto. I was educated in the UK but was getting pure B.S from agencies. People saying there were tons of jobs 'CHECK MONSTER!' but not a holla until some years down when I started to build up Toronto experience. Even now, I get email messages from scouts looking to fill positions.

As Scotian said, Toronto is not a fair reflection on Canada. If you are having issues in Toronto, bounce from that motherfcuker! Try the East like tons of the other RVF guys and you should find joy. Some say it's colder in the winter than Toronto but not as cold as the heart of those pallid and dull lizards that scuttle up and down Yonge St.
In all cases, if it's truly that cold, cuddle up with a BBW until spring breaks and stack that paper in the meanwhile.

Lots of posters hit the nail on the head. Canada's immigration policy is designed to get the cream of the crop in terms of immigrants, however, the jobs market is limited and preference will be given to Canadian citizens which is why you will see v educated professionals in menial type jobs. In one sense it is a waste of human capital but on the other hand, priority is given to Canadian citizens which is fair. One of the unexpected benefits of this policy however, as was explained by a professor of mine, is that the children of those immigrants tend to be among the most successful and productive Canadian citizens. The values of their well educated professional, hard working and risk-taking parents plus growing up in molded in the Canadian system combine to create successful citizens. I recall one stat is that the children of two immigrant parents are 50% chance of going to higher education vs 25% chance of a child born of two Canadian born parents.

Do you have any sites(.gc.ca or otherwise) to link to for this or similar programs.

Not a challenge. It has direct practical implications on some major decisions I'll be making next year so need to do my due diligence.
