Hi All,

I'm looking for a book or other resource that talks about and explains military command structures.

I'm interested in how the devolution of responsibilities up and down the chain of command works, and how the communications up and down the chain work too.

If anyone has any good recommendations that would be appreciated.

The Path to Victory by Donald Vandergrift

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

I definitely recommend Heller's book. Even though it's satire, it's so close to the truth that it makes a lot of career military officers, in my experience, very uncomfortable. Also, you might check out the books on this list.

OK cheers, but which of these books is like a "general's manual"? I'm looking for this more than novels that talk about the topic. Also I understand the basic descriptions of ranks and unit sizes, but I'm interested in the specifics of how responsibility and commands/reports vary up and down the chain.

Into the Storm and Every Man a Tiger, by Tom Clancy - each dealing with the ground and air campaigns of the Persian Gulf War, respectively.

This is a really great book, best Vietnam war novel i've read.
