I didn't even realize the change in nomenclature until I was thinking about it today - the gradual decrease in frequency of the term "hook up culture" until it was basically nulled out of use in the mainstream.

Was it a collective form of anti-slut defense since hook up culture makes it sound like women are actively involved in slutty behaviour? Was it a feminist initiative to give women something to grieve about?

Would love to hear other member's thoughts on the subject

Because it's easier to attention whore when you present yourself as a rape victim rather than a slut.

As we've seen, it gets some good clickbait.

That, plus we're riding a general wave of political correctness right now as 90's-born Millennials continue to get out of the leftist brainwashing factories known as universities.

Heartiste said it best: The goal of feminism is to remove all restrictions on female sexuality while maximally restricting male sexuality.

I'd disagree with that. The end goal of feminism is to make women responsible for nothing while dumping all of the consequences of their decisions on men. Sexuality is but one part of that equation.

RE: Five years ago it was called Hook up...
You're simply observing the cultural shift from Third Wave sex-positive feminism to Fourth Wave sex-negative feminism I commented on a while ago.

Fourth Wave Feminism is about cultivating Female Incels: old enough to vote, but emotionally-immature, morally-black-and-white, and mentally weak / fragile. Women have to become too scared to have sex with a man due to an exaggerated threat climate, and they'll be useful idiots for the cause.

This is the reason why nerd culture, formally the domain of the male incel, has become a feminist cultural battleground, and why online feminists seem obsessed with the cultural artifacts of children and teens.

The other day I linked to a comic where a Tattooed Dyed-Hair Feminist was sat at a children's table only to gush about which animated characters on a kid's cartoon show might hook up romantically with each other. Two days later, the Sara woman organising the protest retweeted an anti-Roosh tweet from a follower. On investigation, I was shocked at just how socially-awkward the original tweeter actually was: for all intents and purposes, 'she' was a sexually-repulsive teenage boy. There was a constant stream of unfavourited, unretweeted, unanswered tweets with the usually scatology - one simply said 'fart noise' - and 'her' interests were that of a 12 year old. No-one would be sexually interested in her. I'm convinced gender fluidity and 'uniqueness' is being pushed so the possibility of finding a sexual partner becomes impossible.

I stopped reading when I discovered her obsessing to no-one over the romantic relationships of the exact cartoon characters the previous day's comic had addressed.

These twenty-something 'Empowered Feminists' seem oddly-concerned by which of these formless, badly-designed colour blobs have 'feelings' for each other.

This this transference is what happens when they're immature and too socially broken to have adult relationships whilst having sexual urges. It distressed me to see the tweeter in question had access to a young child: this is a classic recipe for sexual abuse.

Female Incels. They're real, they're increasing, and this is why I expect violence from them eventually.

The end goal is to have complete power over men. It started as a cry for "equality", but will end with a demand for supremacy. The justification? They will say it's because men are such intolerant, horribly violent, sexual predators.

That is mostly how we're depicted in the news isn't it? Look at the front page of the NYPost every day and you'll find yourself saying, "Oh, there it is again. Horrible, monster man. Horrible, monster Father. Horrible, monster boss., etc."

Now the call for laws to put even more power over men into the hands of women. Even if you're squished into a woman because of a crowded train, she can take a picture, call the police, and you'll be in deep shit. And it's not even your fault.

Look what happened to Roosh in Montreal. Western women have gotten enough power to feel they are invincible and can do most anything to men with very little consequences.

It's going to get a lot worse before men finally wake up and start believing in themselves again. This forum is really ground zero for that, which may not get into full swing for several decades or more. Hope I'm around long enough to see positive changes in our society, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hook-up culture is not going in the direction women were hoping for.

I like to quip to female friends that the more they "win", the more men actually win. They want a career, cool, now we don't have to work to pay for two people. They want casual sex like a man, sweet, getting laid without any commitment just got easier. They want to be able to dress how they want, pose nude for Model Mayhem, walk down the street topless... awesome, we can check out the goods before investing any time. Obviously Roosh and others have been pointing out how this is going to harm everyone in the long run, but in the short run it's just teeing up game-aware men.

I think it is more to do with the fact that these women give up their best (sex) and get nothing in return from men (no commitment). They get the sex but they know deep down that it is commitment they want and rape culture is how the hamster rationalizes being pumped and dumped. That's why you go anywhere and say you're having NSA sex with a chick and people will often quip about how you're taking advantage of her. They know instinctively that we want sex and they want commitment. Now men are getting sex and the women aren't getting commitment so obviously rape.

I feel like it is still present in mainstream culture but we are desensitized to it. Tinder is talked about all the time as the hookup app (widely considered the most popular), marriage rates are at an all time low in America, so it is basically understood as a fact of life at this point. One could say our culture or current culture and it is understood that we are talking about "hooking up" rather than dating or marriage courtship.

Hookup culture makes it possible for men to get sex from women without giving much resources in return. Same reason that sex robots or prostitution are frowned upon. (Prostitution is still orders of magnitude cheaper than paying alimony and child support.)

We need feminism because men and women are not equal.

Rape culture made it acceptable to reverse consent after the fact. Not only was it beneficial, if the girl was caught in the lie there would be ZERO consequences.

Yes but how is that different than the "hook up culture" term that OP was referring to 10 years ago? Same idea, ie NSA sex. So what's changed other than the narrative?
