Why is the sex industry frowned upon in America?
When I was younger I always had a negative opinion towards the sex industry. I mainly saw it as a product of a decadent and feminist society, but as I've grown older I now view the sex industry as a "necessary evil" in today's society. My evolution in opinion started when I began reading up on the history of the sex industry.

Prostitution is ostensibly one of the oldest trades known to man. The sex industry flourished in Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and even in Europe in the middle ages during Christianity. Christian Theologian, Augustine of Hippo held that: "If you expel prostitution from society, you will unsettle everything on account of lusts." Essentially the same thing is happening in American culture today.

In many countries the sex industry is seen as perfectly normal and legal. It is pretty much legal in all of western Europe (With the exceptions of Sweden and Norway), India, Australia, S. America and Israel . Among eastern bloc countries, prostitution is mostly illegal because of old laws that were a relic of the former Soviet Union. To date, Nevada is the only state in America to have legalized the sex industry to a limited capacity.

As I see, it legalizing the sex industry would reduce the prison population, increase tax revenue, and improve the conditions of sex workers. I also believe it would as it would improve men's sexual market value because a lot of women use sex as a bartering tool in relationships. With that being said, certain forms of prostitution should be outlawed: trafficking or pimping of minors for example.

What are your thoughts?

Because of America's Puritan past.

RE: Why is the sex industry frowned upon in America?
1) A holdover from the United States Puritanical heritage.

2) The main thing a woman can offer a man is sex. Most women make blue-pill guys jump through hoops to get sex. Some women don't want to trade sex for money outright but they don't want to see other women getting that money so easily.

3) To echo the 4th paragraph, some women believe that the ubiquity of hookers could undermine the sex monopoly average women have over average men. Every dollar a man spends on prostitutes is one less dollar he can use to buy a girl a drink in the club(who had no interest in him but wanted a free drink). Fuck, he might not even sarge if he can just blow $200 to get his nut off without getting rejected. If a woman says she dislikes something most men will just agree to avoid ending up in the dog house.

4) Vice laws are just another way for the gov't to encroach upon and regulate normal human behavior.

Not so sure how much of it has to do with our Puritan past...

As far as I know, it was tolerated for quite some time (including the time of the Puritans), and there were even designated districts for it in some major American cities. Not sure when it all really changed, but it seemed to be around the early twentieth century.

Would be an interesting historical topic to study, especially the topic of just how and when it became so derided.

I hear I shouldn't believe everything I see on TV but in Deadwood and Boardwalk Empire prostitution was everywhere. In the wild west times and the roaring twenties you could buy a piece of ass just as easy as a whiskey. At one point the sex industry was alive and well in America.

You could also ask why the military no longer allows a large number of whore houses to be regular visitors on military bases or for those on active tour.

Instead you have the few women being fought over by many men, men who are trained to kill no less. I'm not sure that has been a good idea ever since.

It's America's puritan past sprinkled with some late 19th century racism.

Most vice laws originate during that time period. Basically politicians were terrified that blacks on drugs would rape white women and white women would wind up as prostitutes in Asian brothels. Despite our puritan past, drugs and prostitution were legal until around 1900.

Gun control laws as we know them now also originate in the post Civil War period where elite southerners wanted freed slaves disarmed.

Feminist lobby would hate open, legal, safe, regulated, cheap prostitution (and yes, all these are possible with health checks, temporary sex worker visas, and proper immigration controls). Tons of unattractive women would have no ability to get boyfriends or husbands.

Women would need to take better care of themselves and provide better value to get into relationships with men. It would also be a civilizing influence as at the same time genuine rapes and sexual assaults would decrease.

Sadly, none of these details are ever mentioned in the rare public discussions on the topic in North America.

For some "field data" on this, consider the following three general categories:

1. South Asia/Middle East. Fat women normal (outside of dire poverty), usually covered up, dating heavily stigmatized, attractive girls without some type of security often molested, men hungry as hell, higher crime rates.
2. North America and Western Europe. In between #1 and #3. Would describe more but in a rush to be somewhere else soon.
3. East/Southeast Asia, and I presume Latin America and Eastern Europe (haven't seen all them firsthand...yet). Prostitution mostly legal or de facto, prostitutes are hot and available, women also need to be hot to compete, most beta guys even usually get decent quality, crime rates lower (at least if you control for level of wealth)

All boils down to supply and demand (economics applies to more than monetary systems).

Every country in Europe (including the UK) should have a red light area like the one in Amsterdam. Let them smoke weed, have a shag and I'd bet those men wouldn't be prone to doing stupid shit for a week or two.

Thats around the same time American women were given the vote.....coincidence?? And prohibition followed immediately after. We all saw how well that worked out, didnt we?

Boardwalk empire gives a good example of the culture of the time pre and post women attaining voting rights. I know its fictional show but if you need a more accurate depiction look no further than the 3 part pbs series Prohibition.

This well done documentary is/was available on netflix this year and goes into great detail about how women's votes for prohibition created the greatest crime wave the US has seen proportionately in any era.

What are your thoughts?

Those are all great reasons why it will NEVER be legalized in the US to any real degree. The government and politicians have too much of a vested interest in maintaining the prison population. Political hypocrites have no problem using escorts on their own time (Elliot Spitzer and others come to mind), while campaigning on a crusade to wipe out "moral indecency".

These cowards would never publicly come out as pro-prostitution. Republicans that tried would seem weak on crime and anti family, immoral etc. A (male) pro-prostitution democrat wouldnt be towing the party line of poor oppressed women and would be accused of being pro-exploitation.

The only possible change I could see coming is a few ultraliberal cities taking a swedish approach of refusing to prosecute prostitutes and going exclusively after men to allegedly dry up demand. I can see this scenario becoming reality if brought forth by a feminist female democrat under a future Clinton led white house. So basically, this issue will never change if it is seen to benefit American men in any way.

This borders on a p4p thread, given the context of the forum.
