Parents of my immigrant friends are all wealthy, educated and have at least one of their children working for the government. This is no accident. Part of it is the high wages, low stress + holidays and pension so there is no fear of not having someone to look out for them in old age. The other part is that it offsets the other kids who are usually entrepreneurs of some sorts. Balance where the government siblings make $140,000 a year with benefits and are set for life. The family is solid no matter what happens. Up economy like now? Small business is booming. Down economy like early 2000's? Government jobs still get raises and can foot the bills of other family members. Build legacy, family net worth, etc.

Genius when you think about it, but Anglo Canadians have never been too good at working the system other than EI or Welfare.

Truth. Government wages in Canada are crazy. Here is an example for the same position across 3 places I've worked:

Deputy minister of natural resources equivalent, state of TN: $80,000
Deputy minister of natural resources equivalent, state of WI: $110,000
Deputy minister of natural resources, province of ON: $205,000

Yes, you are reading those correctly.

Also, I read somewhere recently that In Ontario? or the city of thunder bay the leading sector for job growth was...you guessed it, public sector.

Damn....

I have a couple uncles who worked government jobs. One was RCMP the other a professor. Both retired under 50 with full pensions. The professor married a younger moneyed woman after his divorce and just enjoys life (or so it seems).

RCMP uncle is a damn millionaire. His job had him involved with trucks and shipping so it put him in contact with the right people. Bought a few trucks and used his contacts to get contracts, ran those trucks as a side job while still pulling in well over $100K as RCMP. Retired under 50, sold the trucks rides the pension money in the bank.

Funny story, he was rarely in uniform and had no police car. But on his daughters first days of school (not his sons) he would dress in blues and take a cop car to drop her off.

After growing up, I think that just adds to the 'player challenge level' vs deterrent. My brother banged some girl who's dad was either local or RCMP K9. He tells a hilarious story of sneaking out of the house while trying not to alert the dog and says "I think the bang was even better because it was also like it was the italian job or something with the cop dad and the dog there, like I was a diamond thief, but with pussy"

Will add another thanks to the nonsense venue cancellation on Roosh's Montreal tour event, at the behest of small but vocal, mentally ill Canadian SJWs:

14. Although we have a Charter of Rights guaranteed "freedom of expression", that right ends where the leftist's feelings begins. As such, rather than go to the trouble of debating "obviously wrong" ideas the state must use all its power to censor any and all views that in any way challenge or contradict the borg collective of safe ideas known as progressive thought and social justice. Should the state ever fail to adequately protect a leftist's feelings, SJW mobs shall bully private businesses into censoring what the state will not.

Especially in the US, if the dollar loses reserve status the FED can simply suck up the excess liquidity by forcing the TBTF banks to purchase the toxic assets the fed has on its liability sheets. This will bring massive deflation, killing the stock market and housing market.

If the FED were to perform such an action, then it would mean our dollar would be backed by toxic assets which means the currency itself would become toxic, i.e. worthless. That's hyperinflation, not deflation. And yes the housing market will drop in value but only because the there will tons of shadow inventory of houses being held by the bank all trying to be sold at once before the currency loses any more value.

Harpert has been a disaster, with the worst econmic record since the Great Depression. The Liberals ran 10 straight surpluses, Harper's government had us back in a deficit position within two years and blew through every cent that had been paid off on the National debt by the Liberals. I don't know how anyone can support this government

Canadian politics have reached a point where I will simply abstain from voting. This time around the options are Harper, Mulcair, and Trudeau. All 3 of them are shit candidates if you ask me.

Even at the provincial level in Ontario it was between the worst premier ever in Wynne or possibly a bigger idiot in Hudak. We are the point where there are no legitimate good choices or even the "lesser evil" option. I rather just stay home then support any of these idiots.

I keep hearing this being parroted over and over.

How true is it all things considered? In 2008 the world plunged into a shitstorm and we barely even felt it here in Canada and still continued to plow money into all sorts of social programs.

I like the Liberals under Chretien and thought he did a good job and had a lot of Canadians interests under his platform but like Canada is famous for when we have a good PM people stop caring what they get up to and suddenly things go sideways.

I really can't see any other option besides Harper. The other parties have a good idea or two but a lot of their platform seems to be undoing things that were unpopular with the left under Harper.

I would get a laugh if the NDP and Liberals had to play nice in order to form a coalition though. I just don't think Canada is truly ready for leadership change. As noisy as the cities are, the rural areas still have conservative leaning values and they can be the deciding factors.

Sadly, the memes about how big and bad Harper is have turned me into an environmentalist hippy who hates capitalism! Damn the internet!

Am I correct in understanding that the left in Canada is, like the left in Australia, often out of power? What exactly changed? Because I see a lot of talk about their gains.

RE: Fundamental “truths” I’ve learned from the Canadian left
^ The left in Canada is more often in power than not. Most of the 60s, all of the 70s except one brief 9 month period, part of the 80s (until 84), from 93-2006 (albeit in those years the Liberals leaned a bit to the right at times, the government actually shrank in two years during the 90s after Canada nearly defaulted on its national debt). In any event, even when a "conservative" party is in power, i.e. 1984-1993 and 2006 to present, the Conservatives end up running deficits more often than not, and pursuing other left-wing policies that it's hard to tell the difference.

Australia is considerably more conservative in its roots (although the read recent ROK articles it appears to be in steady cultrual and fiscal Marxist decline as well).

As I said in the Trump thread the Chretien/Martin government was so successful because they leaned economically right and socially center-left. They slashed government budgets and balanced the books.

We are in desperate need of some government slashing here in Canada.

Chretien also managed to defeat the Quebec separation referendum, choke out protestors and defeat intruders into his own home while dropping hilarious Franglais musings and making fun of himself on political satire shows. He was the last of the 'great' politicians from the Trudeau Era.

I just keep crossing my fingers that Mike Harris will run again for premierof Ontario or prime minister

RE: Fundamental “truths” I’ve learned from the Canadian left
A lot can be said of Harper, and how much is actually true I don't know.

What I can judge of the man though is that he is not likely to sell Canada out. His family is as Canadian as it gets, his alliances are with Alberta and the west, and his terrible environmental track record appears to have been fabricated (no surprise).

On doing more reading, and also being a lifetime CBC fan, I can see why he is actively trying to shut it down. The CBC is imploding in its leftist Huffpo style glory. I would hate to see the CBC of my youth- non biased documentaries, nature of things and Street Cents- get into the whinging and bashing of everything except perceived social justice.

Not an excuse.

Canada had enough in the bank to weather that storm but Harper used the downturn to crack it open to spend and waste money to get his coveted majority.

Things were much worse under Mulroney's tenure. People may not know, or forget, but his tenue caused our country to go bankrupt. The IMF had to seize control of our books and many long standing government programs and assets were put in the toilet or sold for pennies.

The long standing surpluses came from the Liberals being forced by the IMF to gut and rout social programs and they cleaned house with slashes to almost every program.

Harper like his Con-man buddy Mulroney did, will leave Canada in dire straits, pumping a housing bubble that is government backed with a size of about $600 billion.

This is a good reminder to the Americans who think Canadian healthcare is "free".

The real price paid for the social welfare is sadly much more than just monetary.

Thankfully most of the people in the comments are against it. This is going to be a disaster with the worst government in the history of the province. The only reason that they won the elections is because Hudak was an idiot and couldn't capitalize on the countless corruption scandals. He also opened his mouths and scared the public/unions by saying he would cut 100,000 jobs.

I really hope that this "Pension Plan" doesn't go through.

@DR HOWARD and the proposed TPP will be much worse than NAFTA.

Wynne has a majority, it is going through. It will pass unless some complicated legal junk hinders it if the Feds have to harmonize something with CPP for employers.

I have no respect for hacks who peddle get rich money grabs to raise desperate revenues but then going around wasting $3 billion for subway trains that wll run through industrial parks empty of passengers.
