South American smokeshow slung into Sino slammer, supposedly smuggling snow
http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-upd...7463048355

We're going to have to start making a thread for all the chicks who get done for transporting non-prescription drugs across borders.

Quote:The beauty queen was travelling through China, on her way home to compete in the Miss World Medellin beauty pageant after winning the competition at the district level. She had gone to China to purchase items for her trendy boutique back home.

...Hadn't heard of alibaba, perhaps?

Quote:Family members had called to report the traveller had disappeared, but were shocked to learn she had in fact been arrested.
Chinese officials told the family Ms Lopez had been caught with “a large quantity of a banned substance” inside her laptop, local newspaper El Tiempo reported.
The woman’s family is now desperately trying to raise funds to be visit and cover Ms Lopez’s legal costs. She may now face the death penalty.

"Boutiques" in certain countries are always vanity projects subsidized by sugar daddies who want the ho to have something to occupy her time. Money pits.

If it was more than a few grams, she is a dead woman. Especially if it was something stronger than weed. The best case scenario would be a suspended death sentence, which is a 2 years probation (with deportation for foreigners). Problem is that I cannot recall a situation where they ever gave that to a foreigner before. If rich guys from the UK got the bullet or van, I doubt they will spare her either. Especially if it is alot of dope.

I'm sure a lot of politicians are going to run RVF-style SA game on her.

Lure her into fucking while she thinks she might get freedom..... Only to get pump and dumped, with a firing squad waiting as mandated.

The death penalty? Wouldn't she just be deported as she's not a Chinese citizen?

Also, if someone is caught with large quantities of drugs in China they can be executed? Wow, I guess China reaallly doesn't want to relive the opium wars.

Some of the guys nailed it (no pun) on putting these gals into boutiques to keep them busy and launder money via their laundry mats (boutiques).

She will get a pass, deported eventually as China is trying to make inroads in Latin America.....
These girls who run with the "wrong" crowds are "models" but they have never been to Europe or have done anything outsiders would feel is legitimate modelling. They are more or less prepagos and use the term model to hide the fact that they are prostitutes from their friends and family.

I don't blame the girls as they want a quick way out of poverty or more luxury in their lives by going with shady guys. This is nothing new. Nothing is free.

Things have changed in the last couple of years (from 2009):

British man said to be mentally ill executed in China

Quote:A British man convicted of drug smuggling in China has been executed, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Akmal Shaikh, 53, a father-of-three, of London, had denied any wrongdoing and his family said he was mentally ill.

The execution took place despite repeated calls from his family and the British government for clemency.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "appalled and disappointed". But the Chinese Embassy said Mr Shaikh had no previous record of mental illness.

Mr Shaikh's family made continued calls for leniency right up until the execution deadline, citing his mental state, saying that he suffered from bipolar disorder.

His daughter Leilla Horsnell said: "I am shocked and disappointed that the execution went ahead with no regards to my dad's mental health problems, and I struggle to understand how this is justice."

Brothers Soohail and Nasir Shaikh, who travelled to China to visit their cousin in prison and make a last-minute plea for clemency, said they were "deeply saddened, stunned and disappointed".

'Lethal injection'

In a statement issued after the execution, the Chinese Embassy said Mr Shaikh's rights "were properly respected and guaranteed" and British concerns were "duly noted and taken into consideration".

It said: "As for his possible mental illness which has been much talked about, there apparently has been no previous medical record."

A report from the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said that China's Supreme People's Court had not been provided with any documentation proving that Mr Shaikh had a mental disorder.

Mr Shaikh is the first EU national to be executed in China in more than 50 years.

Foreign Office minister Ivan Lewis said he was believed to have died by lethal injection.

His body will not be repatriated to the UK, and Mr Lewis said Mr Shaikh had been buried quickly "in accordance with the Muslim faith".

Mr Shaikh's family said he had been delusional and duped into a carrying a suitcase that did not belong to him when he was found with 4kg of heroin in Urumqi, north-west China, in September 2007.

His daughter has said drug smugglers in Poland convinced him they would make him a pop star in China.

'Inadequate interpretation'

Mr Lewis held last-ditch talks with the Chinese ambassador in London on Monday evening.

He said the government had made 27 representations to China in two years, and believed it had done everything it possibly could.

The execution made him "sick to the stomach", he said, and China "had a responsibility to adhere to the most basic standards of human rights".

The Chinese ambassador has been summoned to the Foreign Office.

In a statement, Mr Brown said: "I condemn the execution of Akmal Shaikh in the strongest terms, and am appalled and disappointed that our persistent requests for clemency have not been granted.

"I am particularly concerned that no mental health assessment was undertaken.

"At this time our thoughts are with Mr Shaikh's family and friends and I send them our sincere condolences."

Foreign Secretary David Miliband also condemned the execution.

He said the UK was opposed to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances, but also "deeply regretted" that his specific concerns in this case, including "mental health issues, and inadequate professional interpretation" had been ignored.

Nope. She is dead. China is just like Singapore. Zero tolerance on drug trafficking and is an automatic death sentence. Firing squad or lethal injection inside a white van. I have only seen locals get the suspended death sentences but that was not for drugs, it was for other stuff like politics or other serious crimes. They won't make an exception for her. If they do it will be a first ever. This all comes from that crackdown/strike hard policy many years ago.

If she was using the drugs but not transporting them, she would have a chance to get deported, but even then it has to be a tiny amount (like less than a few grams). Large amounts automatically equal trafficking and an automatic death sentence for locals or foreigners.

RE: South American smokeshow slung into Sino slammer, supposedly smuggling snow
This has been the policy since 1980 according to wiki. With only a modification in 2006.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_pu...t_in_China

Quote:Capital crimes[edit]
Main article: Capital offences in the People's Republic of China
The list of capital crimes includes counter-revolutionary crimes, such as organizing an "armed mass rebellion"; endangerment of the public security, such as committing arson; and crimes against the person, such as the rape of a person under the age of 14.[10] During the 1980s, "economic crimes" such as bribery, drug-trafficking, and embezzlement were added to the legal code.[10] Capital punishment in China can be imposed on crimes against national symbols and treasures, such as theft of cultural relics and (before 1997) the killing of pandas.[24] Executions under the pretense of political crimes are extremely rare and confined to persons involved in violence or the threat of violence.[10]

Thirteen crimes were removed from the list of capital offenses in 2011, including smuggling of cultural relics, wildlife products, and precious metals.[25][26][27] This brought the total number of capital offenses down from 68 to 55,[9] though many of the crimes dropped from the list were rarely if ever punished by the death penalty.[27] The Draft 9th Amendment to the PRC Criminal Law issued in 2014 reportedly plans to eliminate the death penalty for 9 more offenses. [28]

Capital punishment is also imposed on inchoate offenses, that is, attempted crimes which are not actually fully carried out, including repeat offenses such as attempted fraud. The recidivistic nature of the offenses, not their seriousness per se, is what is adjudicated to merit the capital sentence.[citation needed]

This.
It´s 1kg for opium, 50g for heroin and methamphetamines, etc.
They say she has been caught with “a large quantity of a banned substance”. Assuming it was drugs, she will receive the death penalty.
Drug trafficking is a capital offense in China and punishable by death.
In the recent past the PRC has executed French, British, South Korean, Japanese, Filipino, etc. citizens for that. They don´t make exceptions for some South American whore.

There is however at least one case of a foreign (Kenyan) woman caught at Guangzhou airport in 2013 for smuggling drugs who received the death sentence with two years probation with possible reduction to life imprisonment. It could be that the authorities have some mercy on people who obviously got played, not sure though as naturally it´s all pretty intransparent .

I was travelling through a Russian airport security checkpoint and was asked for my laptop by the Security Agent. She asked to turn it on, but I told her it was dead she scanned it with some device that looked like something cops use to catch speeders on the highway and sent me on my way. Afterwards I was quite confused, but I wonder if it was as in this situation and they were looking for drugs.

China doesn't have firing squads. Just a single bullet from an AK behind the head.

People still take chances and should not be able to get away from the consequences.

With such stiff penalties for drug smuggling, how do you explain the brazenness with which Africans peddle drugs in Guangzhou? There are streets in busy commercial parts of the city where you literally cannot walk more than 20m without being harassed by Nigerians (and others) offering to sell you weed and cocaine. This often takes place right next to the Police who seem either completely oblivious or, more likely, completely uninterested.

Granted, I've never seen this outside of Guangzhou and I've been all over China. It was still amazing though. If somebody told me I had a week to score some cocaine in the US I would be at a loss for what to do. In Guangzhou, I'd simply walk to a street with a Starbucks (ie an area where foreigners congregate) and in 5 minutes I'd have 10 guys walking up to me trying to sell me coke in broad daylight.

No exceptions. Make one exception and then it starts to lose its credibility. TK's post nailed it. I was also going to mention Singapore.

Each country's laws must be respected, right or wrong in your opinion. Arrogance to think you are above a country's law should be punished. If you any of you guys walk around thinking you are better and are going to get away with shit, you will get no compassion from me. I do not operate under the ask for forgiveness later approach. I operate from, you disrespected me by thinking you could pull something over on me approach.

Remember that US kid that got caned in Singapore? People in the US were all upset, I wasn't. Fucking beat his ass if that is your law.

Quote:Michael Peter Fay (born May 30, 1975) is an American who briefly gained international attention in 1994 when he was sentenced to caning in Singapore for theft and vandalism at age 18. Although caning is a routine court sentence in Singapore, its unfamiliarity to Americans created a backlash, and Fay's case was believed to be the first caning involving an American citizen.[1] The number of cane strokes in Fay's sentence was ultimately reduced from six to four after U.S. officials requested leniency.

They haven't forgotten a lot of things that other countries did to them. Maybe they don't wage a physical war, but an economic one, sure. That and owning countries through money. Or at least trying to.
