I'm with Vicious here.

I don't care about that a Lion got shot somewhere in Africa, neither I care about all the people who are putting animals on pedestal and crying out loud because of that.

I simply see no glory in this and no reason why I should praise this guy and give him any extra credits. Doesn't matter if it's a lion,elephant, gorilla or a little deer.
What's the big deal?

I like hunting. Especially elks and deers which suits my crockpot very well.
Ducks are also fun, and tasty.

Nothing against the safari thophy hunters.
But I don't see why I would fall on my knees and bow to them in respect.

Oppah Muchinguri told a news conference that Walter Palmer, 55, was a “foreign poacher” and said she understood Zimbabwe’s prosecutor general had started the process to have him extradited.

“Unfortunately it was too late to apprehend the foreign poacher as he had already absconded to his country of origin,” she told a news conference. “We are appealing to the responsible authorities for his extradition to Zimbabwe so that he be made accountable.”

A bilateral extradition treaty between the US and Zimbabwe has been in effect since April 2000 in cases where an individual is charged with what would be a criminal offence in both countries.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) said on Thursday it was investigating the illegal killing of the lion by the Minnesota dentist and whether any US laws were broken.

Palmer, a keen big game hunter who posts pictures of his kills on social media, is said to have paid around $50,000 (£32,000) for the chance to kill Cecil, a protected 13-year-old lion famous for his black-fringed mane, in Zimbabwe’s Hwange national park earlier this month.

The lion was reportedly lured to outside the park’s boundaries and wounded with a bow and arrow, before being shot dead hours later.

Edward Grace, the USFWS deputy chief of law enforcement, said the service was investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing of Cecil. “That investigation will take us wherever the facts lead,” he said, adding that the service “will assist Zimbabwe officials in whatever manner requested”.

Grace said: “It is up to all of us – not just the people of Africa – to ensure that healthy, wild populations of animals continue to roam the savanna for generations to come.”

The USFWS proposed listing African lions as threatened under the Endangered Species Act last October.

Grace also urged Palmer “or his representative [to] contact us immediately”, noting that “multiple efforts to contact Dr Walter Palmer have been unsuccessful”.

Palmer on Thursday wrote to to his patients to say he he was sorry for killing the beast, but described hunting as his passion.

“I don’t often talk about hunting with my patients because it can be a divisive and emotionally charged topic,” he wrote. “I understand and respect that not everyone shares the same views on hunting.”

Repeating his claim made in an earlier statement, Palmer said he had no idea the lion he killed was “a known local favourite” and said he would assist the Zimbabwean authorities.

The dentist has a kill list of 43 different animals including a polar bear, a mountain lion, an elephant and an African lion he killed in 2005, according to records obtained by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

No. I am intending to start hunting. Although given my location it's a bit trickier.

This guy was a life long hunter, he has hunted all types and kinds of animals, he hunts with both rifle and bow. Trophy hunting is just another arrow in his quiver.

No, likely not. In a canned hunt like this it is the professional hunter (Bronkhorst) who is responsible.

In any event there is 0% chance he will be extradited to Zimbabwe. The Zimbabweans are just grandstanding. Major US sanctions are in place against anyone with any power in Zimbabwe. The US government has exactly 0% confidence in the Zimbabwean government.

I suppose if the dentist is really rich he could acknowledge (from afar) that he mistakenly shot the lion illegally and pay a reasonable fee/fine to the Zimbabwe National Parks, or better a bona-fide wildlife charity in the nation (I think there was one specifically set up to help Hwange Park when the Zimbabwean economy collapsed in the early 2000's).

But it's really the professional hunter and maybe the owner of the land on which the lion was shot who should bear the responsibility.

Then the smart thing to do would be to not speak with certainly on a topic not familiar to you.

A hunter is not just a guy owning a gun that shoots animals. Hunting itself is a monotonous task, consisting 7/10 of waiting, 2\10 tracking (depending on game), 1/10 cutting up the carcass. There's nothing particularly glamorous about it.

Despite what most tree huggers think, hunters throughout history are conservationists, making sure to only bring down game that will not impede the regrowth of a species. There are quotas on quantity, restrictions on age/size and seasonal slots to keep. To go against these principles, many which are older than written language is something other than hunting. Poaching to support yourself and family of course is just as old, though it has mitigating circumstances when it's about putting food on the table.

Trophy "hunting" endangered species for the sake of getting your dick big is however a phenomenon restricted to a blasé upper class, who in turn rely on professional hunters to do the heavy lifting while the tea sipper in the red over coat just pulls the trigger.
There's nothing admirable about this, it's merely a transaction. Not entirely unlike the girls whoring for bags in Dubai and splashing it over their IG. At least they at least are part of a mutually beneficial transaction.

Three things.

- Outraged bleeding heart idiots with a never ending lust for "justice" and blood are way out of control. Demanding someone be sent to a shithole like Zimbabwe to face justice of some sort is the problem with people who think they're more important than they actually are.

- Zimbabwe is salivating about getting a well-off white guy on a noose to show how they are morally superior. Make no mistake, if he ever were to be extradited there it will be a racial issue and nothing to do with poaching.

- The guy is a tool. I've never hunted in my life and I agree with the actual hunters in this thread. If you want to hunt you do it properly and not some canned bullshit hunt where you lure an animal into a kill zone with your several thousand dollar carbon bow taking close aim.

He isn't a stranger to this sort of thing so its karma teaching him a lesson. Personally I would fine him 10-20 dollars for every dollar he spent for the animals he killed.
