You know, it's great these fuckin losers are making such a big deal out of the Inferno, perhaps now more people will read it seriously. It is an AMAZING work, Dante is ranked in the top 5 poets of all time by just about any scholar.

This is a textbook example of presentism, which infects so many people's minds. You CANNOT judge the actions of the past based on what we believe in the present. You see this kind of bullshit all the time in historical study, especially among more liberal/revisionist scholars. Howard Zinn's ironically named People's History of the United States is a textbook example.

Other examples come from attempts to understand the relationship between science and religion, which is one of the worst understood subjects in popular discourse.

This is the kind of thing that really gets my goat. I was very anti-religious when I was a teenager. Now, with a more mature perspective, I can acknowledge and respect the extraordinary amount of art and culture that religion, Christianity in particular, has brought into the world. For example the incredible Gustave Dore artworks that illustrate the Dante material, even though I have always appreciated them as they have adorned many of my favourite "blasphemous" musical works, I guess I have a deeper appreciation of the context and source material these days:

The worst problem with Comedia is that it is too long and too boring, but there is nothing offensive about it. These people are insane. If the popes and politicians of the time could swallow it, then surely so should the modern SJWs.
