Yes. If you are lifting fasted and find yourself short of energy for your workout, try supplementing with 10g of BCAAs and/or 10g of simple carbs pre-workout.

This morning, I was close to having fasted for 24 hours, when I found myself at a Subway. I ended up getting a 6" sub, because food just did not seem appealing. I think I that caffeine and a stimulant medication might have been suppressing my hunger somewhat, as well.

In any case, the 6" sub was absolutely an optimal amount of food and after I finished it, I knew that a footlong would have placed me in a food coma. However, I will surely be hungry by the end of the day, because 600 calories isn't enough for a grown man for 36 hours. I wonder if my body can easily get used to having a single massive meal a day. If anyone has experience with this, please chime in.

I have been practicing IF on (mostly) and off for 5+ years. My typical format has been 16:8, breaking fast at 2 with the big meal post lift around 8.

For the last few weeks I have been running a modified OMAD, still 16:8, set-up for a cut, as follows.

......LIFT Days

Fascinating video about the differences of fasting vs. calorie restriction:

Main points: fasting allows you to burn more fat and keep more muscle mass than calorie restriction, while staying less hungry.

Have the same dilemma, been doing 23/1 for last 17 days, lost about 10lb in weight, but when I eat the feeling is overwhelming. My brain freezes and loses any rationale thought. All it cares about is eating, which can result in overeating. What I will say is I have noticed my senses are far sharper (smell, taste etc) and if I eat anything processed I can feel this toxic chemical flavour which makes me re-coil.

Have started exercising as body getting used to my 23/1 IF pattern. knocked out 100 push ups and 100 squats in 10 mins and surprisingly didn't feel too weak. Hopefully I will keep losing weight, but have a feeling my body might plateau...any thoughts tips welcome?

RE: Intermittent Fasting
In this thread /thread-7062.html I just asked about why casein. Some take it before sleeping because it processes slowly. It sounded good, but I wonder if I were to take it would be it sort of cheating and keeping my eating window open longer because it is slow processing?

I usually try to eat within an 8 hour window. Let's say I drank a couple of scoops of my whey protein at the end of that window. Does it sort of keep it open longer because it is slow processing? I never really thought about how quickly certain foods get processed.

Thanks.

SAM - everyone will interpret it slightly differently, but in my opinion no it does not keep the eating window open as different foods get absorbed at different rates. My view if u stop eating at a certain cut off point that's when the IF begins.

From Victor Pride, How Intermittent Fasting Cured My Allergies Forever.

I had terrible allergies my whole life, but about three years ago they slowed down tremendously. I thought it was thanks to my new juicing regime and healthy RVF lifestyle, but now that I think about it...I started doing IF around the same time my allergies calmed down.

If you have allergies, don't sleep on IF.

RE: Intermittent Fasting
^-- seconded on allergies -- I have seemingly random (non-seasonal, non-specific) allergies, and I started noticing that it's a confluence of factors that tends to have me sneezing the next day:

- crap food right before bed => heartburn / bad shits
- alcohol the night before
- weather changing from dry to humid

If any of the above are higher than normal, or a few of the above are present together, I'll have rhinitis the next day.

So when I began IF in all kinds of patterns, the biggest effect was that I barely had heartburn at night anymore, and my GI tract felt much better and more productive. Over time I realized, inflammation in the GI tract, in the esophagus, sinuses, it's got to be all related.

The rhinitis is MUCH rarer now, from say, one or two episodes per week, to one or two every couple of months.

And when I do have an attack, it was usually preceded by overeating and/or eating right before bed.

Certain carbs (pizza dough) fast track my heartburn, and thus increase the likelihood of allergies over the next 24 hours.

So there's something credible in here, from my n=1 experience.

Edited to note: my IF has been on-and-off, from months of 8 hour feeding windows, many weeks of One Meal A Day, sprinkled with plenty of cheat days and occasional 30 hour fasts.

I feel the biggest internal caveat to IF for me is that I can easily overeat even on OMAD, because I love calorically dense foods (aged cheese, red meats, healthy fats). Throw in a little bit of bread "cheating", and I can gain weight on OMAD if not careful.

All that to say, my IF isn't religious, yet it's still helped allergies, energy, and weight loss when I'm diligent.

One thing I'm wondering is if fasting (or IF) will ease my forearm tendinitis and possibly my back pain?

I've been researching here and elsewhere and haven't found anything.

Yes, but only if your forearm tendons and back have a breakfast allergy.

Your tendonitis is not caused by the food you eat. It's caused by the things you do. The only way to fix tendonitis is to alleviate the cause of the tendonitis (whether it's a tight muscle, bad form, repetitive movement, ect), and then take specific action to heal and strengthen the tendon.

IF is not a panacea.

I watched it the other day. I'm doing IF daily, and a 24 hour fast once a week. I'm trying to work up the nerve to do a 72 hour fast. I know if I can do 72 I will probably stretch it into 5 days.

I've been researching here and elsewhere and haven't found anything.

I've been rock climbing pretty regularly for nearly a year and can feel a bit of soreness / tenderness after workouts. MSM powder and proper nutritional supplementation have helped recovery tremendously. MSM by itself is amazing, and you don't need much. I usually have that first thing in the morning and take 3 ZMA pills at night (recomm. dose for men).

I've also been doing IF very consciously and regularly for a couple weeks now and have seen my body fat steadily decrease. I start the day with several glasses of water then a keto coffee (largely decaf with a splash of regular) around 8a-9a:

My meal window begins around 3p (when I take my supplements) and I aim to finish eating by 8-10p (working on making it no later than 8p). On workout days I will usually have 3-4 soft-boiled eggs around 12p or 1p, eat a bit more but I really do my best to avoid refined sugar. Stayed fasted during the day makes me REALLY taste the sugar/sweets if/when I have it, and I take in far less than I used to crave.

IF and staying in ketosis have been magical for me. I'll workout fasted, whether first thing in the morning or usually in early afternoon then have my first meal. My mental clarity is far enhanced, without extra nootropics (I'm not against them, but I wanted a baseline). My mood is more positive, I feel more creative, and I don't need to think about feeding several times a day as I know I'll just drink water until it's time to feed in mid/late-afternoon. This eating routine may change once I drop a few more lbs of fat but I plan to stay with a minimum 12 hour overnight fast before the keto coffee, then another 5 hours before my 5 hour feeding window. I'm excited to begin seeing and feeling definition in my abs for the first time since I was a teenager!

I recommend following Thomas DeLauer on YT as he seems very tapped in to nutrition and fitness. Another interesting keto drink recipe, for Citrus Matcha Green Tea Fat Bomb, and explaining the benefits of each ingredient:

RE: Intermittent Fasting
Tried a 42 hour fast. Interesting experience. Will probable do it a couple times a month see how I feel. Had certain points during which I had hyper sensation of smell/sound. This time I will break it with something healthy rather than going to buffet after work.
My bodyfat has always been really low so im not sure if there are benefits to going longer.. I'm not looking to loose weight.

Also ate some beets today to track my digestive speed. Its a simple process, eat beats, then count the days till your stool shows evidence of them. 1-2 days is healthy, anything more is a sign that things are moving a bit slow.

RE: Intermittent Fasting
Sorry if this was covered earlier in the thread. The other day I saw a youtube video analyzing whether or not "bulletproof coffee" breaks your fast. In terms of ingesting calories, clearly it does, but they were measuring blood sugar/insulin response and their determination was that no, it doesn't hurt you to drink some high fat coffee during your fast. My question is relating to autophagy. Does the coffee interfere with that process? Thanks.

Quick answer No. Ingesting 10-20 calories will not throw you out of fasting. Fasting is not a on/off switch. However, with that said will your liver break down the fat calories via ketones and use that as a source of energy? Yes.

It's ok to have a glass of coffee or two while fasting. Obviously don't go full retard with creams and such.

Please don't like my posts or rep me. I do not wish to be judged by how many rep points and/or likes I have.

I know this is anecdotal, but I've been doing 16/8 IF for about two years and the problems I used to have with joint and back pain are pretty much gone. I also cut most sugar out of my diet around when I started IF, so that might be a factor too.

From what I've found through research, is that as long as you don't go over 50 calories during your fasting period you won't completely break your fast.

RE: Intermittent Fasting
I've been getting back in shape, it took me a while to find a good gym.

On my workout or lifting days, I first workout in the morning at 7 am or 10 am, and don't bother to eat until 12 pm.

My first meal is a kale/avocado/pear smoothie, I read that on an empty stomach, its best to drink a green smoothie in order to absorb all that awesome vege nutrition.

Later, I usually will eat a grass fed steak around 1pm or 20 mins after my shake to let the body digest the smoothie properly.

I decided to go all Keto,in order to burn off some belly fat. I was at 21 percent body fat.

At 6 pm I will than have another grass fed steak.

Than at 7 pm I would eat a avocado raw and than take vitamin D and calcium supplement with the avocado, to finish the day.

After going through this diet of grass fed steak and green smoothie and avocado.

I was able to to get down to 15 percent body fat in 6 weeks.

Keep in mind I decided to work out twice a day sometimes, but I only go 80% during my workout in order to allow my body to work out twice a day.

I only ride the bicycle at the gym for 20 mins twice a week at a slow rate. I lift 6 x a week.

This seems like a good way to burn off belly fat.

Martin Berkhan, the creator of Leangains (16/8) released his book the other day. http://a.co/d/8VBi9l2

I picked it up on Kindle simply out of appreciation for all the free content Martin has put out over the years. The Leangains approach to intermittent fasting and strength training got me in the best shape of my life. I'll drop a review here once I've finished reading the book. I have a similar regimen during the week but your three meals are pretty interesting. I lift weights a couple hours prior to my first meal, at least, 4 times a week. Some mornings I'll also include a run around my block or jiu jitsu.

My first meal (9 am) is three eggs, a protein shake, and an apple then my final meal (5pm) I will have a couple of single patty hamburgers (ketchup, mayo, and a slice of cheese). Of course, I'm meeting my calorie intact for the day with these meals but have noticed a significant reduction in belly fat since doing this '16/8' IF.
