You're grossly exaggerating the cost of living in River North.
You can find a studio apartment for as low as $1,350/month out in River North. Using the tried and true 36x rule, you'd need to make a little less than 50k to afford an apartment in River North.
70k is more than plenty.
Dude's not going to land some fancy schmancy luxury apartment but there's no need for one anyway.

River North: Great food, usually very attractive women (especially in summer)
Lincoln Park: Mix of college and yuppie, lots of bars and music venues/blues clubs
Evanston: Good restaurants, not much of a bar scene, lots of Northwestern college kids
Lake View/Wrigleyville: Younger crowd, somewhat fratty, great to hang out during Cubs games
Lincoln Square: Up and coming, diverse crowd, interesting restaurants/breweries
Hyde Park: U of Chicago crowd
Oak Park: Nice area, but why bother with the rest of the city available?
Edgewater: Hipster-ish area, father north is more Loyola crowd, farther south can get dicey
Uptown: Great music venues, classic bars (Green Mill), Argyle (Vietnamese neighborhood) has great food, can get a little dicey
Rogers Park: Loyola crowd, plenty of good bars, changing neighborhood that is going more upscale, mix of college/hipster

Wow, I had no idea parts of Edgewater and Uptown were dicey.
I find Oak Park intriguing, since it has the same setup as Evanston (I'm a Northwestern alum). I loved Evanston since it was a nice, peaceful suburban town, but with the logistics of a city (completely walkable with daily foot traffic). Best of both worlds! Over my last seven weeks of college, I went out 46 days, and every single approach I did was in Evanston. Pretty insane. This may have not worked over, say, a six month span; I would have possibly run out of girls to approach out there, haha. I did have some girls that I accidentally approached multiple times.

Eh I guess I misspoke--they aren't particularly dangerous or anything (and certainly have gotten a lot better in the last 5 years or so). Just not necessarily the "shiniest" places in the city. They wouldnt be my first suggestions for people visiting for the first time, but since you spent time in the area there shouldn't be any issues. I lived in Rogers Park through college and even Rogers Park was kinda grimy in places. Edgewater and Uptown have some cool bars and restaurants, but there won't necessarily be a big crowd like Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, River North, etc. Nothing to shy away from, but probably wouldn't be the highlight of a Chicago trip depending on what you're looking for. Moody's in Edgewater would be my recommendation, and Uptown has Green Mill. Probably not the best for day game as they aren't going to be high-traffic areas generally.
I confess I haven't spent much "going out" time in Oak Park, but it is cool. Frank Lloyd Wright House, Hemingway House, stuff like that. It's generally considered to be the "coolest suburb" for what that's worth. I just feel that Chicago has so many different neighborhoods and things to do w/in city limits that branching out to the suburbs isn't necessary. But as an NU alum that likes Evanston, you'd probably enjoy Oak Park.

So Edgewater and Uptown aren't great for day game? Do any of those other neighborhoods not get much foot traffic?
I'm really intrigued by Hyde Park. It's in the south side but it looks really nice and fairly safe. I mainly go for big booty bitches so I think (hope) there'd be a high amount with the high black population, haha. But then again, the total population is only like 25k, so maybe it's not a good bet?

Yeah, I've heard UChicago is dork city, lol.
Interesting, I'm pretty high on both Edgewater (besides the hipster and fruitcake contingent) and Uptown. They seem a bit nicer than Rogers Park, although Rogers Park is by no means bad (and they do have a bunch of beaches, which is pretty sweet).
Lincoln Park sounds like the best blend of scenery and game. River North and Lakeview seem a little too crowded and urban for my tastes. I also hear that Lakeview has a fratty vibe. I don't mind those kind of dudes since I love sports myself but that type of vibe tends to attract women that I'm not really into. I'm more into black girls and Latinas, for whatever reason.
Bro, your advice is much appreciated. I'm likely moving to The Windy City inside the next six months.

Lincoln Park is a good mix of people. College kids from DePaul, yuppies, older $ crowd, etc. No more or less "crowded" and "urban" than Lakeview though, fyi (only about two miles separate Wrigley Field from Fullerton/Lincoln Avenue center of LP). The good thing about Chicago is you can kinda find any type of girl in any type of neighborhood. Black and Latina will have a higher concentration in Edgewater/Uptown. Half of Hyde Park is very nice--U of Chicago, Obama's house (calm down...)--while the other half is kinda shitty. It's also pretty far from nightlife compared to all of your other options.
Rogers Park has gotten very nice. Loyola bought up a bunch of property, old apartments converted to condos, lots of new construction, campus is beautiful (and on the lake), etc. I think you're probably good with any of the options you mentioned save for Hyde Park (too far).
River North will be clubby/yuppie. Lincoln Park and Lakeview will mostly be bars (nicer restaurants in Lincoln Park, less fratty). Lincoln Square/Ravenswood is good "off the beaten path" restaurants, somewhat hipstery bars, one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city (former Gov, Blagojevich lived there, Mayor Emanuel lives there now, etc.). Edgewater/Uptown will be an eclectic mix of city living. Same with Rogers Park, though more "urban college town" with Loyola. Any of these neighborhoods (other than Lincoln Square--Brown Line mostly) are along the Red Line, so you can easily get pretty much anywhere

RE: Chicago
Needed to get away from Munich for a couple days and went to Chicago cause I got cheap roundtrip flight tickets.
Liked the city a lot, everything's walkable or connected by buses and "L" trains within the Loop, Magnificent Mile and River North. Had bad luck with the weather though - grey skies, chilly wind, endless rain (especially in the evenings) - honestly felt so cold that I though how do locals in Chicago endure the winters. Great selection of stores, fast-food places, bars etc., especially in the River North area. Urban feeling, while not as crushing as NYC might feel to a visitor. Actually has a small-town feel as soon as you start getting out of the main shopping/office districts.
City definitely has a traffic problem though, lots of intersections always blocked by cars that can't move anywhere and are stuck in the intersection, also I found driving to be quite agressive for US standards (lots of horn honking).
As for the bad weather, I spent some time riding the "L" trains to all parts of town to get warmed up and get outside of the rain without having to sit in a coffeeshop all day, great views of the skyscrapers as you get away from the center, interesting to watch the apartment buildings built inches from the "L" tracks with you actually looking into people's living rooms.
Some parts of town look really bad, especially around the Pink and Green Lines of the "L". Wonder how people make a living there. Even supermarkets boarded up completely.
As for girls, wasn't necessarily impressed too much. Some eye candy was there, but not in great numbers (probably due to the weather as well), and girls didn't seem more approachable than in other cities of the US I visited before. Got 14 Tinder matches while there, opened 11 of them but none replied. Didn't open the other 3 cause they were not so pretty in the end. One hot girl though on the street: I was walking in the downtown office area during lunch time, and a petite, very pretty girl in her early 20's, white, type "young office assistant" pulled up her dress to bring her champagne-coloured hold-up stockings back in order, right on the street while other people walking by.
Also found some of the black girls working the store registers to be both beautiful and quite friendly. Had no matches with black girls on Tinder though. Is dating white guys for black girls acceptable or a usual thing in Chicago?

Hope, all things considered, you enjoyed your time. You definitely got shit luck with weather--week before you came, it was gorgeous
1) Some areas (downtown/Loop, River North) can get congested and pretty rough for drivers, but that's big city living.
2) Yes, there are some rough areas (especially along the Pink and Green Lines--at least going West on the Green). Some areas are struggling, while other areas a few blocks away are thriving.
3) I'd blame the lack of "eye candy in great numbers" largely on the weather. Plenty of gorgeous women can be found, especially so when it is nice out. Last few days have been crazy rain, cool, and overall shitty weather...
4) Black girls dating white guys: all depends on the type of girls/neighborhood they are in/careers. Professional women, not an issue. Predominantly younger south and west-side? Probably won't see them with white guys mainly because there aren't many in those neighborhoods. But no over-arching issue with black girls dating white guys.

Thanks for your input, I really did enjoy the city despite the weather! Watched the forecasts the week before I went there, seems I just had bad luck with weather turning for the bad so quickly and thoroughly. But you can't change that when you're set on a fixed-date long-distance flight and on vacation leave from work.
Would definitely recommend Chicago for a long-weekend getaway to anybody who lives in the US, or can get cheap flights from Europe.

I called my shot. The King is back! Extremely honored and grateful to make my return to Chicago. In my opinion, Chicago is the best city in North America. The only city in North America that rivals Chicago in terms of logistics, amenities, and culture is NYC.

Can anyone tell me about these winters and their effect on social and night life? Do people still go out during the winter or does the city turn into a ghost town?
For those that lived in Chicago this last year, would you say its still a good bargain with respect to cost of living and what the city offers (culture and women)?
Right now, I am stuck between Austin and Chicago.
I know the city fairly well, have spent quite a bit of time there. Although I'm more familiar with LA & Las Vegas, also consider them far superior cities.
Nothing slows down in winter, if anything, people go out more it seems. If you challenge the bitter cold weather, then you're considered a pansy. Have fun waiting in line when it's -20 to get into a River North club.
For starters, Chicago is middle America, and all the idiocy that comes with that. Civic fanaticism, best food fanaticism, sports fanaticism, just nonstop fanaticism. look down on everywhere besides NY for some reason. They're so fanatical about "the city" they even look down on the suburbs. lol.
Oftentimes, people mistaken the culture of a city vs "culture", all big cities in the US have impressive museums, historical monuments, which fall under the umbrella of culture. Chicago has a lot of that, but the actual culture of the city is annoying.
The city itself has no edge to it, very plain or something & food obsessed to the point Freud would be impressed. Obviously lots of attractive women given the sheer population size, but they do marry younger there, if you're a single guy above 30 you might be seen as strange or closet gay, but that is how the midwest is.

RE: Chicago
Hey dudes,
Finally going to pull the trigger on moving to Chicago. Based on my research, it looks like LP/Wicker Park/West Loop/River North might be cool places to live in. Here's some pros and cons I have outlined for myself:
River North
Pros: Great logistics, strong concentration of night life, close to high traffic day game areas (near MM)
Con: A bit pricier and noisier, seems a little mainstream and stale
Wicker Park
Pros: Good night life (mostly bars), hipster/artsy vibe, which can be cool since I'm a musician
Cons: Further out from other main parts of the city and since its hipster-ville it probably leans far left
West Loop
Pros: Good logistically when it comes to restaurants/groceries (at least the location I am looking at is)
Cons: Not a lot of nightlife, feels like it will be a little dead after work hours
I couldn't really generalize Lincoln Park since I got mixed reviews. I'm leaning more towards West Loop, because I found a cool apartment and it looks like I'll be able to reach River North and Wicker Park easily. I feel like these are the places I'll visit the most. I like both night game and day game, but like to stay diversified when it comes to bitches (dating apps/social circle), so having these game venues close by are not of central importance to me, but will play a part in my final decision. My budget is pretty flexible.
