Instagram bans the hashtag ‘curvy’ and users are not happy about it

The company says the rationale behind the move was the fact that porn companies used the term to share content, reports CNN.

But people have taken to other forms of social media to express their disagreement over the move with some even calling it “absolutely disgusting”.

While #Curvy is no longer searchable in the app or the desktop version, many people have been quick to point out that other, more insidious search terms such as “Thinspo” which encourages girls to post photos of themselves looking skinny, still remain.

Good. The word "curvy" has become the worst misnomer on the internet. "Curves" were meant to be a GOOD thing, but fat feminists stole the word to translate to 'fat'.

I am appalled and disgusted that the term that once signified a luscious, healthy body is now indicative of the exact opposite.

It irks me that so many liberal arts majors can collectively misinterpret the meaning of such a simple word in such a gross fashion. I guess English literacy is no longer a required (or desirable) trait in graduates

Looks like they banned it to stop people from posting porn-ish material (or whatever violates the TOS). Don't give these Instagram people any credit for doing anything. Especially for fat shaming. They are banning it based upon on a pure technicality.

Wait a second.

Actually..... if you think about it. If you posted TOS violating pictures constantly enough with Feminism related hashtags, they might ban some of their precious hashtags.

What a stupid precedent they have just created. I am pretty sure some hackers will notice that, if I did just now.

It was just a technicality, the curvy hashtag was being hijacked by post and photos that are actually against Twitter policy......

This highlights an aspect of social media that is obvious, but many choose to ignore. It isn't there for the benefits of the users, it is there for the benefit of the proprietors. Instagram could have banned the accounts that posted porn, or used the hashtag for promotion of porn etc. Instead they ban a hashtag, and keep the users who are probably generating significant page views etc.

Purely a business decision, not ideological.

Exactly. It's business. This is America. If it doesn't make dollars then it doesn't make sense. Instagram is owned by the Facebook people right? Lots of kids, teens, and other family members use it. If they would ban porn on FB, they will ban it on Instagram. Why? Because the non-porn users will take issue if they see their kids on the stuff, or it's just bored women that do not want to see it, or compete for attention with big booty models. I bet lots of skinny and conventional models want more attention than the latest Latina with a crazy looking booty trending on the side of the browser. Just as easily it could be some sloppy looking feminist that is jealous, and it backfired on their other fat ass friends.

One thing will never change, women will never ever stop competing with one another for attention and resources.

What they're saying doesn't add up. If the curvy hashtag was correlated with porn posters, and they didn't want porn, they should've kept it to themselves and used it as a heightened signal for their user banning system.

I'm guessing it has more to do with PR towards certain underrepresented demographics they want to pull in, plus provoking rage. More rage = more speech = more idiots taking selfies holding some stupid written message.
