I'm a rock/blues guitarist, who is slowly getting into jazz, and have always been interested in jazz songs by rock greats and jazz guitarists. Here are a couple of my favorites:

The great Pete Fountain has passed away at the age of 86, one of the last great practitioners of traditional New Orleans jazz.













In my opinion the greatest clarinetist of all time, his only real competition for that right in my opinion being Barney Bigard.

There will never be another. RIP.

As both a kid and an adult, I played sax/woodwinds in jazz bands. Worked through some of the Jamey Aebersold books, which are designed to let you practice alone with a rhythm section accompanying you on the CD. Good tool. I also did a lot of listening to jazz greats and some live performances, took some lessons.

I eventually dropped the project when I realized that jazz actually has little appeal for me musically. I'm reminded of what the rich kid's dad in Talented Mr. Ripley said: "jazz is just insolent noise". I think contemporary jazz is a bit like a fetish. You need it wilder and wilder to get off. The same could be said of classical.

More recently, I've been focusing on piano/vocal, learning standards, the Great American Songbook: Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter (originally performed by Ella, Sinatra and others). I can read lead sheets and have a set worked up of about an hour. My parents were really into this music when I was growing up, so that's a big point of connecttion for me. Not jazz, strictly speaking, but more to my taste.

A guy that I grew up listening to was Maynard Furguson. My grandpa introduced me to jazz when I was around 6 and I have been listening to it ever since. In fact, I am listening to "Blue in Green" By Miles Davis as I write this.

I've always wanted the time to get into jazz - as I'm a record collector with a small crate full of them so far, I can't wait to get some of the greats on vinyl.

When we're talking about jazz, are we talking about the typical stuff like Miles Davis's Kind of Blue? Or some of the wilder stuff that came out after rock changed the face of music? Bitches Brew, above, angered the hell out of Miles's fanbase, and then On the Corner shook it up even more.

And then there's stuff like this, which sounds like an album full of the freaky free jazz that finds it way onto a Captain Beefheart or a Frank Zappa album...this shit used to legitimately scare the hell out of me when I first heard it as a young teen.

Skimmed Bobby's Wiki after I heard this from a DJ out of Toronto I follow - what a break in life for a young black guy with innate sublime talent growing up in LA in the 50s his older brother was a good buddy of Dexter Gordon and his sister's boyfriend was Eric Dolphy.

Anybody on this thread up for posting recommendations for jazz venues, since it's so much of niche thing?

In Belgrade, Serbia I recommend Sinnerman's Jazz Club, it's on the roof of one of the buildings in the city center and has a two level patio on the roof. Well- known place, decent prices, and they have a fair mix of jazz, rock, and other genres. Can expect to pay a cover of 5 USD some nights.
