RE: The difference walking every day makes
I though that maybe Samsamsam will post here about it, but since he didn't do it, I will.

Every time I go to Lviv (especially on short term trips) my diet consists mostly beer/kwas (local non-alcoholic drink) + pizza. Yet every time I am coming back home I am at the same weight or even kilogram less. Walking is the only logical reason for it. I am not talking like 14km I've done recently in mountains area as it was an exception, just walking every day through the city. Not a surprise locals, especially women, are slim, as they seem to walk a lot too.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
I LOVE walking.

When I was living in the UK in Newcastle, I walked 40 minutes to and from work everyday. On top of that, I often walked another 30 minutes to and from the bars at night to game solo. Damn..I was walking around 2 and 1/2 hours some days! I was in the best shape of my life but my time management had to be good because most of my day was spent walking.

I also went for long walks with a good friend of mine where we discussed life, love, career, family, friendships etc. The improvement in my mood and mental clarity from these long walks and chats was priceless.

One of my big pet peeves about the americas in general, especially here in the DR, is that they hate walking. They don't want their skin to darken from the sun and they think poor people walk and rich people drive SUVs. I try to walk as much as possible and they think I'm an eccentric gringo.

I have some restaurants about 2 blocks from my place and girls bitch endlessly about how far they have to walk. Jeez I feel like slapping them sometimes.

Walking has beneficial adaptations in both fat oxidation and insulin sensitivity. Insulin sensitivty is everything.

No doubt some of you folks have heard of Nassim Taleb (author of Antifragile). Stumbled upon this essay of his 'why I walk' and although he comes from a statistical mathematics background, his ability to disseminate anything based on simple logic is incomparable. For anybody on here with 10mins up their sleeve I'd recommend this. Most days I incorporate a run or walk before breakfast.

I walk 3 miles per day (total) to and from work. This is in a suburb so people driving by look at me like I have a hole in my head. The only downside is I'm starting to get sore calves, though I don't know if this is from walking, running on the treadmill, or flat feet.

It isn't about walking per se. Rather, roughly speaking, it's about any activity that makes you expand more energy that your energetic intake is. Incidentally, there's a very good BBC Horizon documentary, The Truth About Exercise in which the presenter talks to researches who say that walking can be beneficial but it's gonna be a very long walk, ideally every day. Unless you have plenty of time, it's not an option. Instead, they recommend to do high intenstity interval training because it takes little time and affects you much faster than any type of regular cardio (for average man) you can think of. Either click the above link or have a quick look at the excerpt from the documentary below.

I feel like walking moves my organs around and gets my bowels working better. That's worth the 20-30 minutes I put into a nice walk.

Saw that, great documentary. Really punches in the face all the Soviet-Harvard delusional academics of the past 50years who are emotionally and financially invested in the spread of misinformation. i.e. must eat breakfast everyday, only aerobic training will increase VO2 max, etc.

I think the barbell strategy is best, make sure you're active throughout the day at low intensity, don't sit down for longer than an hour at a time, but then light it up in the gym or on the track for a brief period of time and send your BMR into overdrive. Couple this with complimentary diet and you are a goddamn powerhouse.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
Walking everywhere, everyday is easily sustainable.

HIIT isn't, unless it's part of a sport you play.

Every single strength & conditioning nerd I've talked to (and they're a dime a dozen in powerlifting) has said how wonderful HIIT is. None of them has ever followed it for more than a sustained 4 weeks effort. Research studies never show this because they are conducted within a short time frame.

KB/DB circuits, Tabata sprints etc. are boring as hell.

The regular bloke walking daily for a year / for life will do way better in the long run.

The smart bloke who combines both will be the one coming out on top.

I disagree its a lot easier to sprint for 10 minutes a day than walk for an hour or two a day.

Yeah, I would not want to do sprints more than twice a week if I was doing other training.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

If you are trying to lose fat, the fasted cardio in the morning is also very good, for like 30-45 minutes.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
I've walked nearly every day, several kilometers, for the last 3 years to and from work. Sometimes I'd take a break on the weekend. Now I have a job that has me sitting more at home, and I literally feel physical and mental pain if I don't do some form of physical activity during the day. As an added benefit, I never completely lose my tan, even during the winter.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
This kinda goes back to the adages:

Q:What is the best gym?
A: The closest one to your house?

Q: What is the best martial art?
A: the one with the dojo closest to your house?

Q: What is the best exercise plan?
A: The one that you actually stick to.

If you can stick to walking every day or on many days then great! If you have not been able to then you need to interrupt your pattern and try something that has a chance of working.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
I've been walking 10-20km a day lately this past week just from walking around my city either exploring or searching for dimes. A month ago I could barely walk 5km without getting tired. Now i can workout in the morning and do all this walking without tiring. Walking is amazing and a great way to lose weight gradually plus overall be healthier i love it.

I used to walk everyday for about an hour, but now cycle anywhere under 10 miles instead of driving. I find doing nothing other than that keeps my weight pretty constant.

Aside from the obvious physical benefits already listed, walking probably the best form of stress control available to man. Better, and more natural, than formal meditation. I'd walk most of the day if I could.

Also, hiking and mountaineering shouldn't be ignored. More energy, but usually better surroundings and more of a sense of accomplishment.

180lbs man will burn around 200 calories while walking 1h at 2.5mph(normal speed)
To loss 1 pound of FAT you need to create ~3500 calories deficit.

Not changing diet, walking 1h per day will make you loss about 2 pounds per month. It also makes sense that since you will be using more energy, body will signal you that you need more food(hunger).

Cardio for weight loss in general is bad idea imo. Google how it can even impact testosterone negatively.

I personally went from 220 to 175 ( now at 190 but ripped ) with absolutely 0 cardio. My blood results are perfect, my heart rate/BP same.

Deadlift,squat,benchpress,weighted chin'ups
+ high protein diet, with appropriate amount of calories for whichever goal I had in mind (weight loss/gain)

Walking at least 30 minutes a day is a principle I've completely internalized at this point. That alone will give you a baseline of health.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
Now that I live in Europe, I just notice how easy it is to walk everywhere. Where I'm from in America, it's frowned upon to walk places, since everything is so spread out and difficult to walk to. I blame American infrastructure actually. But here, it's impossible not to walk places. Years ago when I last lived in Europe I reckon on average I would walk probably 8km a day back and forth from Uni until I got a bike.

Then of course I rode everywhere, but that still counts for cardio also.

You should consider the possibility that walking, and low impact aerobic exercise in general, has benefits beyond what is gained during the actual period of exercise. Just like weightlifting. It is many people's experience that when they exercise, especially aerobically, their appetite is suppressed for quite some time after.

You see, everyone points out what you have. That walking for an hour only burns X calories, but to lose even just 1 pound you need to burn multiple times X. That's all good and well, but then even a casual observer can...observe that there are almost no people who walk a great deal but are overweight or obese. And of course the converse: That almost no overweight or obese person walks a great deal in any day.

I mean, those are the facts. I'm with you on the calories in vs calories out bit, and don't believe people who say they undereat in terms of calories but don't lose weight. Frankly, I think they are lying. But just like anybody else I can acknowledge the obvious: That people who walk a lot are almost never fat. My guess is that research would show that walking suppresses appetite somewhat, and also that there are thermic effects to walking that last after the person has stopped walking. Much like weightlifters believe that more muscle = more calorie burn = more weight loss/maintenance.

RE: The difference walking every day makes
I live near a trail in Florida where there is a good path that is close to 5 miles.

Since I lift in the garage I usually do this and I went from 320 to as low as 230 but now sit at 240 stalled (6'1"). The 10 lbs. was muscle it's been two years, in fact given my waist size going down over that time it might be more than 10 lbs. Anyway the weight loss came when I started walking now that I think about it. I look above average for a near 47 year old but could be downright studly for my age at about 190 I am thinking. A couple hotties think I am now but they are also closer to my age. My arms are nice sized, I have the neck muscles and good well defined shoulders. However, I still have leftover man-boobs and high-up visceral fat (meaning the very top of my stomach still protrudes out some. There is a hernia in the upper abdomen too.

The weather just changed a little maybe I need to get back on the walking kick. My waist size is the lowest its been since I was about 29, but the two stubborn areas are upper mid area (stomach and man boobs) and inner thighs. I assume some will come off the ass too. Forearms/biceps/triceps/delts seem pretty good. Program was just Push Day, Pull Day, Leg Day type thing and I counted Deadlifts as Pull Day not Leg day (Squats). Nothing fancy I have a power rack, an extra bar with bumper weights and the higher weight PowerBlocks. I also have some kettlebells I don't use and occasionally jump rope with a speed rope to get the muscles hot but otherwise just simple lifts and no more than 20 lifts in a day.

I haven't lifted in 2 months either. Lately I go shoot hoops for an hour and have wanted start doing some batting cage work hitting baseballs (I have one in my yard) but it sounds like getting back to walking and moving the time from 12:00 AM to 6 or 7 AM would be good for starters. Or walk daily but hit the baseballs or shoot hoops on non-lifting days for fun exercise.

I eat strictly low-carb and really credited the weightlifting for weight loss more than walking but maybe it was both. Before reading this thread I've been kicking around:
Boxing places
Orangetheory Fitness
MMA

Maybe just getting back to the walking except in a fasted state would be the thing to kick me past my stall without having to feel like I am killing myself at Orangetheory (HIIT) fitness. Of course doing some sprints 2-3 times a week won't hurt.

A Treadmill might be nice though to watch TV or something. On the trail you have bikers, moms with strollers etc. I've twisted an ankle just stepping off the concrete because I am dicking around on my phone at night. Maybe a $10/month place with a damn treadmill I can multitask a little.
