The message was deleted soon after posting, but not before being captured and circulated on Twitter. Soon criticism was heaped on the organisation behind what a Washington Post reporter called an "appalling, sexist tweet."

"For those of you wondering what twitter would have looked like in the 50s, @england has helpfully obliged," tweets Lee Jenkins. Martin Belam comments: "Imagine the people signing off on that @england tweet and going 'Nope, no problem here. Can't see anyone thinking this is patronising.'"

The @England account has nearly 1.2 million followers, and had been mentioned about 1,000 times within an hour of the "mothers, partners and daughters" tweet being posted on Monday. Not all of those referenced the tweet - many were simply welcoming the Lionesses home after their third-place finish at the World Cup in Canada - but most of the top retweeted messages were discussing the controversy.

The FA defended itself on Monday, saying the tweet linked to an online article on the FA's website about the players being reunited with their families. The line about "mothers, partners and daughters" originally appeared in that story as well, but was later edited out.

"The full story was a wider homecoming feature attempting to reflect the many personal stories within the playing squad as has been told throughout the course of the tournament," says an FA spokesman. "However, we understand that an element of the story appears to have been taken out of context and the opening paragraph was subsequently revised to reflect that fact."

Even now with feminism, and women shouting about being powerful single mothers, raising strong independent daughters, and having equality in the home they are railing against being subservient. Subservient to whom? A husband, their children (non-disciplinary let's all be friends mothers in the absence of passing off discipline to the husband to escape guilt). With their stated end goal of removing any subservience, the above statement concerning subservience speaks of a looming spectre for a need for subservience, or a gross interference in the lives of others whom they claim to be speaking for but have never come into contact with.

Now it's offensive to be related to people. I suppose the message here is that having a family is oppressive and stifles freedom and independence.

If this is true, perhaps we made a mistake signing the gay-marriage bill. Perhaps we should abolish marriage all together. Perhaps we should also remove all culpability for parenthood as well. In fact, all infants should be neutered when born so as not to naturally procreate and produce anymore burdensome offspring that would-be mothers would have to slave over or abandon/abort. That would get in the way of being free and independent to do whatever you want without a care or responsibility in the world. All children born should be born in birthing tubes via synthetic fertilization. Child rearing would be 100% provisioned by the state and no one would have to worry about being a slave to the autocratic and archaic family structure.

It's a good thing that tweet was put on blast. It's about time someone pointed out how terrible it is to be related to people, be in love, have others love you back, and depend on you for things.

1) I thought Footballer was their job. They don't flip burgers on the off season.

2) Most jobs are subservient, more so than traditional marriages. Corporate culture is shit.

Remember a few years ago Oprah was saying shit like "being a mother is the hardest job on the planet" and the female audience would cheer in ecstasy. Today referring to a woman as a mother is "appalling."

Anything associated with being a woman is seen as negative now. Anything that masculinizes women must be praised-- more women pushed into sports, boardrooms, STEM, etc.

Women today are shamed if they aren't striving to be men.
