DEAR ABBY: I am 59 and have a steady, good-paying job. I was married for 20 years, but divorced 11 years ago. I am set in my ways.

I have been seeing a woman, "Melinda," for eight years now. She's 51 and also has a steady job. We live 30 miles apart. Our relationship has been somewhat rocky, but we have also had some really great times.

Melinda has said for years that she wants to get married. It makes me nervous. My hands sweat and I think of every excuse not to when she brings it up. I'm in love with her, but when she brings up marriage, I run and hide.

She feels our relationship should end so she'll be free to meet someone else and marry. She deserves that right, and I understand it. I struggle, though, when I don't hear from her, speak to her or I imagine her with someone else. It drives me nuts, and I end up contacting her. We start talking and things seem fine for a while, until the M-word is mentioned.

I suggested we move in together and see how it works, but it never happened. Abby, what is my problem? Why can't I get married? -- TORN & STRUGGLING IN ARIZONA

DEAR TORN & STRUGGLING: Your problem may be that your first marriage -- and probably your divorce -- left you marriage-averse. Because you're in love with Melinda and can't manage without her, let me suggest that you discuss this with a licensed mental health professional and see if you can get beyond your fears. Joint counseling with Melinda would also be helpful for both of you, to ensure there are fewer rocky patches in your relationship in the future.

Someone give this guy a link to this forum. OR even better, tell him to buy a one way ticket to the Philippines.
Not only will Melinda be out of his mind for ever in less than a week, but most importantly, he'll feel more alive and happy than ever in his entire life so far surrounded and loved by sweet, svelte, feminine and young lovely honies that he could not even day dream about in Arizona or anywhere else in NA.

He senses that it would be the wrong decision, but I guess the therapist will dissipate his fears and claim that a man has nothing to fear from marriage - nothing except a severe deterioration in the LTR, a more demanding and more vicious woman and a final divorce raping that will take 50% of what his first wife left him with. If he is really lucky he may spend his golden years behind bars, because he cannot make the alimony payments.


No - marriage is all empowering and men have nothing but goodies in store for them.

Poor sucker - will be raped again, this time maybe in prison as well.

Part 2 from Dear Abby

DEAR ABBY: I moved away from my hometown 18 years ago. At the time, a friend of mine had found out she was HIV-positive. Thankfully, healthwise she's doing well. To look at her you would never know.

We have reconnected, but I have recently learned that she had several relationships in the past and didn't reveal that she was HIV-positive or use protection. She says she "loves" these men, their families and their children. It makes me sick that she's killing them.

Someone called her doctor and he talked to her about it, but she lied and said that she had told them. These men have no idea! What can be done so she quits spreading this disease? -- SHE'S KILLING THEM IN INDIANA

DEAR S.K.T.: I ran your letter by an old and trusted friend, Dr. Mervyn Silverman, former director of health in San Francisco. He asked me to reassure you that if your friend has been under treatment for HIV, her chances of passing it on are far less than they were years ago. He also mentioned that if these men's wives had contracted HIV from their husbands and become pregnant, that their disease would very likely have been discovered.

You need to talk to your friend and explain that this is both a health issue and one of morality. If she's continuing to have unprotected sex with her partners, there is still some potential risk that she could pass along the virus. So if she truly loves anyone but herself, she will get with the program and be honest about her health status.

Abby died a long time ago, as did her sister Ann Landers. Their family took over and since then it's been specific advice that is usually this bad. Both Ann and Abby usually gave more spiritual advice, they weren't stupid enough to tell a man of 59 to see a shrink because he has cold feet.

As opposed to what? All those unlicensed mental health professionals who have offices but no education and just give out advice willy-nilly?

Wait! I just realized I described Dear Abby, Ask Amy, Caroline Hax and all the other advice-dispensing hacks from medialand.
