Sexual Frustration Driving Kids to ISIS

LONDON—A generation of domineering South Asian dads are being blamed for exacerbating the epidemic of young sexually frustrated kids in the West skipping town to go and fight for the so-called Islamic State.

After two years spent with dozens of convicted terrorists, repentant Islamists and a former fighter known as the Godfather of British Jihad, an Emmy award-winning documentary maker says there was a common theme running through almost everyone she interviewed: immigrant fathers who couldn’t deal with the more open sexuality of the West, and who took out their own frustration on their children by abusing them and repressing their sexual urges.

“Nine times out of ten, look to the dad and you’re gonna find he did something; beat them,” Deeyah Khan told the Daily Beast. “I would blame the fathers absolutely.”

Khan explores this subject deeply in her new film, Exposure: Jihad which is premiering on ITV in the U.K. Monday.

Herself a child of immigrants from Pakistan and Afghanistan, her film explores a host of other factors that contribute to the radicalization of young men and women. But parents who struggled and failed to adapt to the Western world in which they were raising their children showed up time and again.

Strict fathers, and sometimes mothers, often refuse to accept their sons’ fascination with girls, sports and the rest of the modern world—helping to create a situation where they felt isolated in their own homes just as they did as minorities in wider Western society. None of this forces young people into the arms of the jihadis, of course, but it helps to create an environment where radicalization can flourish.

Hate preachers and online terror recruiters are adept at stepping into the void. “These people end up being surrogate dads. So many of the guys, some of whom didn’t want to be on camera, said the same thing. ‘God, they really cared; they would call to see if you got home OK. My Dad never did that,’ one of the guys said,” Khan explained.

One of the former Islamists featured in the documentary is Alyas Karmani, now an imam in Bradford. He said charismatic radicals sucked him into the world of international jihad. “When someone for the first time starts to understand you, emotionally support you—put that arm around you show compassion and love for you—that’s unbelievably powerful and compelling,” he says in the documentary.

One of the most obvious generational rifts between teenagers and their parents is sex. Young Muslims living in the West are caught in an invidious trap; their parents tell them sex before marriage is haram, forbidden, and they want a say in who they eventually marry. And yet they live in the same sexualized society as their non-Muslim school friends.

“There’s a real sense of hate that you have, that I can’t do that,” Karmani says. “And that’s why I find a greater sense of sexual dysfunction sometimes in Muslim communities.”

“You know, I was talking to my wife this morning, and I said: ‘This is all about sex, everything all comes back to sex,’ And she said, ‘Oh you can’t say that.’ But that’s it. These guys just want girls, that’s all they want.”

Joining ISIS promises to release these young men from parental pressure, minority status and sexual frustration all at the same time. Karmani says misguided teenagers fell for idea that heading for Iraq and Syria would make them cool. “I’m there with my gun, which is more or less just a penis extension, out there,” he says. “Look at me, I’m a mujahid now… I’m powerful now, I’m sexy now, girls are going to look at me, and there’s girls who would wanna become my bride now.”

Another British man, who was attracted to jihadism in the pre-ISIS era, told the documentary-makers that even back in the 1980s there was a seductive power of the jihadi warriors.

Munir Zamir became an acolyte of Abu Muntasir, a British mujahid who went to fight first in Afghanistan, then Pakistan and Burma in the 1980s and ’90s.

“This man was famous. Infamous,” Zamir says. “A 6-foot-7 man who can pick up 10 non-Muslims and toss them over a tank—I had to meet this Abu Muntasir.”

“Dressed in black—all black with a black turban,” he continues. “I’d never seen anyone dressed like that in the U.K. Legendary father of jihad—I was in awe of that look. I thought to myself, this is what the warriors look like.”

Abu Muntasir was at the forefront of the jihadi movement in Britain, introducing foreign speakers including the American cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki to the thousands he helped to radicalize.

“I was in the forefront,” he now says. “Saying: ‘What’s wrong with you? Where’s your spirit? How can you be so lazy?’… sprinkled with, lots of emotive terms and words.”

Breaking down in tears during the filming of the documentary, he said he realized he had been wrong when fighting in Burma and meeting young teenagers who begged him for help to quit the conflict and go to school.

“I’d rather live as slaves and have my kids go to school,” he says, between sobs. “What is this honor? I’m happy to be a coward.”

His influence, his projection of righteous and cool fighters, helped send young men to defend their Muslim brothers in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Chechnya in the 1990s. That early quest for jihad was seen by some as more readily associated with conscientious fighters travelling to take up arms in the Spanish Civil War than it was with terrorists and suicide missions.

But, in the words of Karmani: “These were viruses, you could say, that infected the Muslim community…. We infected a generation with that virus.”

The imagery of brave and righteous jihadis was honed and better disseminated first by al-Qaeda and then the even more extreme ISIS, which upped the production values and took their message into the homes of anyone who was interested via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

While the Islamist propaganda has undoubtedly improved, Khan argues that Western society and immigrant families should be doing much more to stop South Asian or Muslim teenagers becoming vulnerable to their videos and social media messages.

“They’re being failed by everybody—their family, their local community and us,” she said. “The fact that somebody is able to sell them death and make death look appealing to them and we’re not able to sell them life… That’s not just their fault that’s also a failure on our part.”

Abu Muntasir - born in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), saw a lot of family members killed in India-Pakistan War in 1965. He vowed to kill Hindus.

Munir Zamir – grew up with a deformed hand and suffered a lot racism when he was growing up. He had heard about Abu Muntasir and joined his group.

Alyas Karmani – tried to fit in, had a white girlfriend, also suffered a lot racism

It seems like they're saying that Muslim guys join these militant groups to attract female attention. It seems like it's a form of peacocking, like bodybuilding or buying a flashy car. Do Muslim girls chase guys who are involved in the whole Jihad/Islamic movement?

Ultimately you can say that everything men do is motivated by sex, so it's ridiculous to pass that off as some profound insight to explain why young Western Muslims choose to become jihadis. Sex is also ultimately the major reason that young men choose to lift weights, buy expensive cars, go to college, take showers, and do pretty much anything else besides lay around and jerk off. So what? Is that supposed to be enlightening? Also, since when do children rebel against ultra-strict parents by becoming even more strict themselves? That's like a preacher's kid rebelling not by smoking, drinking and fucking, but by becoming a monk. If Islamic young men in the West wanted to rebel against their strict parents ("Fuck you, Dad!") they wouldn't be joining ISIS, they'd be joining their local LGBT club.

A more incisive explanation as to why these young men are joining ISIS is simply that ISIS is masculine, violent and fills the spiritual void that is ever-present in the modern West. Young men like to express their masculinity in extreme ways, they are drawn toward violence, and the shallow consumer culture of the West offers nothing beyond pointless hedonism. So it's no surprise that so many young men are drawn to the ISIS banner: it's offering something them something they cannot get anywhere else.

There’s plenty of (barely or sometimes ex-)Muslim guys who say “fuck you to their parents” and get involved in drugs and women. You don’t hear about these guys because they’re not involved in religious extremism and they won’t go out in public denouncing Islam, because they don’t want to get killed.

The parents are usually not hardcore religious nuts, they tend to come from a more liberal sufi Barelvi version of Islam. The kids end up connecting with the fundamentalist preachers and go hardcore into their religion. The kids end up more religious than the parents.

The kids feel a disconnect to their parents and the Islamic fundamentalist organisations give them a sense of community and belonging.

I noticed there's a lot of peacocky behavior among British Muslims. Lots of them own flashy cars, wear bling, put gold in their teeth, etc. There are also a large
percentage of British boxers from Muslim backgrounds. I never made the connection, but it wouldn't surprise me if sexual frustration is making the men feel like they need to stand out.

Those guys get laid regularly & they are not religious, it’s nothing to do with sexual frustration. The peacocking comes from a combination of the local culture and South Asian cultures. All South Asian village cultures are about showing people that you’ve made it.

There’s a lot of British Hindu and Sikh Indians who do the same thing.

The family that lives next to my mum in UK is Pakistani. They have a son who had a kid with a white English girl, who then moved in. He then went to Pakistan and married a girl from there, and she also lives in the same house! I don’t think this guy is sexually frustrated.

I agree. There are a lot of marginalized young guys out there looking for something to fight for, as all young men do. In ages past, healthy outlets for these impulses could be found in joining the military. Before that, governments could send their unruly lads overseas to foreign colonies.

But all that has changed now. Even in my lifetime, the military has become little more than just another social welfare organization, shaped and molded to fit the needs of the precious and pampered Western woman.

It won't be long before other alternatives fill the gap that is being left.

The call for more good girls and marriageable girls in society needs to be tempered. A healthy society needs good girls, but it also needs some practice girl sluts. We just forgot that society has to elevate the good girl and punish the sluts for being sluts- even while having sex with the sluts.

It is a necessary contradiction that makes sense when we go back to the basics that men can have sex with multiple women and still function properly, but women who want to be happy should have few if no other sexual partners outside of their marriage.

Terrorism is a sign of weakness – an group cannot beat an army on the battlefield, hence it “terrorizes” the civilians. If ISIS lined up all of its manpower against the US Army in a face to face battle it would get wiped out very quickly.

Muslims have the concept of “Ummah”, a global community. Anybody who’s at involved with wars with Muslims globally, be it USA, Israel or India is considered the enemy of all Muslims. One of the guys in the documentary says that he wants the “American Empire” to fall.

Remember the movie Fight Club? Bored men start fighting to get a chance to express their masculinity…it came out of a few years before 9/11, the Cold War was over and men were trying to find a way of being masculine, because there were no wars. Of course, after 9/11, there was the War on Terror and things changed. These young Muslim guys are bored, and they get sucked into terrorism because they want to prove that their lives are worthwhile. They think that they will go to heaven if they die on the battlefield fighting for Islam.

It’s easy to get Muslims riled up by showing them examples of Muslims suffering. Some of the guys in documentary joined up after they saw video footage of Bosnian Muslims getting killed.

There are few other religions which are as passionate and violent as Islam about “protecting” their own – what did the so called “Christian” western countries do for the Christians in the Middle East suffering under ISIS? Nothing!

I remember seeing on TV a Muslim Palestinian interviewed in an Israeli Jail. He said something like, “Jesus said that If someone slaps you on one cheek, you also offer the other cheek. I’m a Muslim, if you slap my face, I’ll slap you in the face twice as hard!”

Another aspect, ex-muslims often dislike British Muslims more than most nationalities because they overcompensate how Muslim they are for some reason.
I am not sure if this is entirely accurate but it is consistent with these findings.

Eagerly awaiting the sociological explanations for grooming gangs too!

I think Islam gives them a sense of unity. I remember seeing a documentary in which some Jamaican-British kids remark on how the South Asian migrants used to be so passive against violence from the National Front and white soccer clubs, but now they fight back and it's whites and blacks on the defensive. This increased willingness to fight was attributed to Islam.

True it's a generic observation, but the underlying gem is that high levels of sexual frustration in a population increase their propensity for risky behavior and their vulnerability to cult techniques.

Something that you will NEVER see the MSM admit to is that the pro-fag lobby is well aware of that and is using it to their advantage, both to convert and to enlist sexually frustrated straights as "gay white knights" who will do their bidding in an attempt to appear like good people.

Lets not forget job growth is anemic which makes it impossible to support a family for these young Muslim men. They despair at having to wait for their magic payday in the stagflation economy so they fuck sluts until they make money or join a gang that promises them rewards sooner rather than later - ISIS.

A big unspoken part of the problem? Muslim girls raised in Western Countries have huge expectations of what sort of man they deserve in return for their virginity, which means the average Muslim guy isn't getting Muslim pussy.

Very much agree with this. Coming from a family where my grandfather sold me on adventure and freedom while reading Hemingway to pass the time. Nothing registers well like freedom to a youth. Unfortunately there are very few outlets for that mentality and even now among the youth the soul sucking career lifestyle does not appeal to them.

Some are even praying for a governmental collapse and want to start up their anarcho-syndicalist/anarcho-communist fantasy. The PC world truly does make the average man dissatisfied.

I have to disagree slightly. Because we are seeing members of a religion joining their coreligionists in a holy war.
It can't be purely attributed to the malaise of Western Societies.

It sure can. My compatriots view the world as the fault of the power elite and to satiate their hunger for morality they attempt to look for outlets to do so.

-Drug Dealing
-Hedonistic levels of sex
-Video Games
-Consumption of alcohol and drugs(especially the comeback of psychedelics)
-Raging hardons for alternative style rule and anarchist/communist utopias.
-Obsession with protesting and attempting to start communes.

To name a few. If anything it's frustration at the almost safety and monotony of Western society. There's no colonial wars with lands or plunder. No mercenary companies for convicts and men of fortune or the unscrupulous teen with nothing on his mind except the world is big. If anything the PC power structure in the past few decades have been the cause with college seen as a necessary luxury to live youth before selling your soul.

Edit: Emphasizing hedonistic levels of sex part. I know groups of people(usually 20-25 people) whom irregularly hang around each other where everyone is Eskimo brothers with everyone. The girls get passed around and fucked whenever on the fly. Back alleys, cars at random, etc. if anything those groups exists for fucking and pushing boundaries.

The issues in the Muslim world are related to the youth bulk. This means plenty of young men but no opportunities for them. Their home countries don't offer jobs and a future for them. When you look at the peak times of Europe then you see a young of 3th and 4th sons that go out to conquer their place in the world. Many young men that try to find a place and some of them listen to radical ones. Its the same now in those countries.
And in the west they struggle with the cultural integration. And even if they seem to be integrated they feel that get a job and make a living with it for the rest of their life is not putting any higher value to their lives.

The western societies seem unstable and weak. Insecure and unpredictable. But also boring like you get catch in a hamster wheel. A mix between unstable and boring. This leads to a lot of frustration. Look at the numbers of voters in the elections. People don't vote any more, they are frustrated with the system. And some of them turn into radical fanatics.

If they want girls so badly how come they don't make a trip back to Pakistan or wherever their country of origin is. They could have a bride in no time, I'm sure they've got plenty of cousins back in the country of origin, or they could call on the local mosque for girls who are of marriageable age and bring them back to the new country, any low income parents in those countries would love to have their daughters marry off to people who are richer and live in foreign countries. Sounds way easier than joining ISIS and killing people.

Sexual frustration is a cop out. Throw more sex at them, that's the current motto of the west. Not family formation or good communities just more sex, that will solve everything.

I don't believe for one second that parental abuse or sexual frustration or feelings of cultural marginalisation is behind the flood of western Muslims fighting for ISIS, committing acts of terror or being " radicalised".

If so, those three factors would also apply to frustrated young Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Bhuddist or even Christian males. Where are the Hindu terrorists??? Is there a Sikh ISIS?? Of course not.

I don't see ISIS recruiting the masses, only the fringe losers who are fuck ups, loners, psycho's and those who are bored and like to be romanced by the movement of fighting a foe.

Pick any time in history and you will see the little guys fighting the big players.

You want to know the most hilarious part? These losers who go there are useful pawns to soak up incoming bullets or as bomb merchants in trucks and cars. Look up the recent trend of ISIS utilising foreigners as suicide bombers. Watch the videos and you will see the battle hardened ISIS fighters saying bye bye to the fat, limp wristed idiots who drive to their deaths.

They want them as an endless conveyor belt of slaughter upon their enemies. I'd say the game ISIS is playing is typical propaganda which feeds into the innate animal of man. Nothing new to discuss here.

Those who know how to fight, know the language and are physically able are used as the spear of propaganda. They know a white man from a Christian country who has converted, murders foreigners and locals alike on the whims of their religious creed will rub people up in a bigger way than some Allah Akbar screaming bearded tramp from some shithole village/town nobody ever heard of. These guys are killers first and foremost and are extremely dangerous when cornered.

If someone has to ask why men and women from safe countries go to join movements like this then they need to do a lot more research outside of the subject itself.
