Let's take a minute to appreciate just how many Americans make their living on government largesse, and therefore are by definition anti-Trump.

2.8 Million directly employed with uncle same. Out of roughly 300 million Americans, workforce participation rate is 60%.

Adding in state and local, including teachers comes to about 16 million. So about 9% of the entire working population has a government job.

Now add in how many "private companies" only exist due to the overreaching government. Lawyers, accountants, other professional agencies that help other private companies manage business complexities from government regulation. How many employees of these private companies want less regulation?

Add in companies that get fat off government procurement. What % of working Americans feel they would be worse off with a smaller government? 25%?

Add in people who get a government check every month. (take out Social Security). The number of people sucking on the tit is phenomenal and they are ALL scared of Trump.

My worry is that the independent candidate would be Mitt Romney. As I wrote earlier in the thread, he is the only one who would have the loyal donor network to organize a serious campaign. He has tried to recruit someone else to do it but no one else has come forward so it's just possible that he decided to do it himself. Kristol hinted at this possibility recently:

Trump has defined himself as a strong nationalist who is intent on sealing the borders. Conservatives and libertarians also view the 2nd Amendment as crucial. By being pro open borders and pro gun-control, Gary Johnson is pretty much limiting himself to Bernie voters that wouldn't have voted Trump and might have gone for Hillary, blue pill leftist globalists.

I don't like this. Romney already stated he couldn't find anyone else willing to run against Trump and re-affirmed he wasn't interested in running either. Of course this could've just been some misdirection and political maneuvering to keep both the Trump and Clinton camps from knowing what he (Romney) and his cronies were up to. I don't see how Kristol thinks he could actually do this -- the clock is ticking and time for the purported candidate is already short.
