I originally posted this song in another thread, but I thought it was worthy of its own. I'm not sure if you guys have heard it before, but I was astounded at the lyrics. They even got the tats, "the aloof alpha" figure, and an array of other "slut tells" right.

Artists who come off television shows like "The Voice" and "American Idol" tend to have short-term relevance at-best. Real artists who blow up appear to come out of nowhere.

This chick is some bootleg latin version of Lady Gaga, and none of her songs are placing anywhere relevant on the charts.

This song is hilarious to me. After thinking about this for a little while, I think this song was written by some dudes (based on other posts, seems like the case) who know what carousel implies and all the imagery... the singer is probably clueless and banging her drug dealer... and young druggie girls with a martyrdom complex are in love with this song because it represents that addiction to the alpha dick they can't get their mind off of

Melanie Martinez certainly fills a niche doesn't she? Lindy West disease, yet somehow remains relatively thin. She is a girl that SJWs can relate too. Ugly tats, multicolored hair, non-white but a very threatening non-white that is about as white looking as you can get, and "deep" lyrics that are melancholy and hipster-ironic (SJWs think they are clever but can understand and relate to the sadness of the music.)

This song was just way too truthful for women today, so it's probably more painful for them than fun.

It's actually quite an intelligent song and social critique of modern culture. The woman signer, Melanie, is just a singer. The real artists are the two guys you linked.

After listening (and watching), I don't think this was inspired by the phrase "cock carousel."

The song uses the concept of a carousel as a metaphor for romance. I hear its inspiration in several other places.

First, I think it's musical roots are partially found in a forgotten Keith Sweat hit from 1990 called "Merry-Go-Round." Second, the lyric seems loosely drawn from an annoying old Hollies hit called "On a Carousel," where the singer is trying to catch up to his girlfriend who is riding the carousel.

Finally, the tone -- and her tattoos -- make me think she's trying to cop the gothic/creepy vibe of "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri. Like that song, she used a strained lyrical conceit to make her point.

On top of all that, carousel imagery is far from new in pop. The song follows a long tradition of fairground/amusement park songs, dating back to James Darren's (awful) early '60s hit "Goodbye Cruel World" and carried on by the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and even Bruce Springsteen ("Wild Billy's Circus Story").

As recently as 2013, Kacey Musgraves won a Grammy for a song that used a carousel as a metaphor, "Merry Go Round."

You could even put together a CD anthology of such songs and probably make it a box set since there are so many. My personal favorite is an obscure girl group era number called "I Lost My Heart at the Fairground" by Glenda Collins.

So, sorry but I don't hear the cock carousel as either inspiration or a metaphor. I hear a bunch of cheesy pop songs buried inside its pretention, with the exception of this one, which was pretty cool:

Thought this song/video perfectly captures the modern dating scene. In the short term, we may as well capitalize on the carousel culture and break into that top 20% of men who will be horses on the carousel. While in the long term, fight for a culture that encourages some form of respectable courtship.
