Old Guy is shocked--I can't turn off texting in my iPhone
I'm amazed I can't simply turn off my ability to receive texts on my iPhone.

I must be old.
When I was young phones had no answering machines except maybe at the Pentagon or something.

Phone rings, no one picks up, less detritus than a tree falling in the forest with no one there.

Then answering machines. It COULD record a call, putting you on the hook, but you COULD TURN IT OFF. Many businessses with land line do the same thing now, they simply say "We're open 8-4, please call back during those hours." Click.

Now in the Philippines, with some girls who just can't stop texting "What are you doing?" -- often the most likable and humblest ones. I've realized I can't turn texting off. So they KNOW their message is getting through, and that you're ignoring it.

I searched for hours, and there is no known way I could find so I can simply say "turn texting off" such that I simply never receive a text. You can't turn off your iPhones ability to receive texts.

I find that amazing.

Now I have to block the ones who text too much individually. I send them a courtesy message before I do it, I lied and told them sometimes I block all texters.

I say "going offline now."

There's something really creepy to me in that, that it's assumed I am willing to receive all texts from someone who decides to send.

I am now an unpaid part-time employee of the cell phone system.

A bit behind the times old man. Blocking texting is like saying you can block mail being sent to your email or to your mailbox if they have an address.

A word of advice to newbies. An interested girl will make the effort to reciprocate. You can't fix running bad game if you've already been failing with her.

RE: Old Guy is shocked--I can't turn off texting in my iPhone
Yeah, I am behind the times, because I see a qualitative difference between a--

physical mailbox-- easily avoided

email- somewhat easily avoided unless you leave alerts on, I use webmail and have to log on to it.

texting- cell phone assumes you want to see. That's the key issue-- I can turn an email app off, and choose when I log onto email. YOU CAN'T TURN THE IPHONE TEXTING APP OFF as far as I know.

That stimulates an idea however, I'll turn off all alerts, no number appearing in the testing app icon.

IM SHOCKED that there is now no way to be unlisted in facebook. Anybody can search you up. The fuckers have gone too far. They ignore the fact that some people would like to have an account and just converse with a few people and be invisible to the rest of the population. Idiots.

Settings > Notifications

Disable notifications for texts and only check the app when you feel up to it.

You're welcome.

RE: Old Guy is shocked--I can't turn off texting in my iPhone
I was thinking of this the other day and realized i can just turn off my phone if I don't want to see or respond to texts.

If you have an iphone turn on iMessage and let them see when you have read their text.

That way they will see you haven't read it (if they too have an iPhone). When their text comes in, just ignore until you feel like reading it.

Can't you choose to have most everything hidden? picture etc etc etc, to where it only shows your name and gives people an option to add you as a friend / send a message.

or is that still too much for you?

As for OP, can't you just not view the messages? I know in Japan they use Line to message, and it shows when the mail was read. I just ignore reading their mails until I feel like opening them. I've never had any problems with that.

isn't the basic rule of the game to receive a message an then appear too busy to reply to it the same day?

i can't see how this creates real problems.

There's something ominous about receiving a text from someone you don't know. Have you ever seen When a Stranger Calls with that sexy young thing Camilla Belle?

I apply that concept to my phone when a strange number calls me. It seems, however, that nowadays, regardless of whether or not you do not want to 'pick up' your texts, you somehow still get the message.

It can be draining receiving texts all the time, there is sometimes too much energy wasted in deciding whether or not to get back to that person, weighing the pros and cons of the future conversation on a certain topic. I can definitely understand where you are coming from iKNOWeX..

The best I've found is an automated message response via an app called Auto SMS Lite (Autoresponder), gives you time to think about what you want to say, if you're not in the mood to text.

There's also apps out there that will block a person you select. Unfortunately, no cancel SMS, unless you use airplane mode, but then you can't use the phone to call, text, surf, e-mail. GPS could be separate depending on your phone.

Maybe, we should start a movement to have CANCEL SMS as an option?

The worst is when you have women who gave other women your number, you feel like a sextoy.

Out of the woodwork, into the night, onto the moonlit veranda.

Get one of these.

https://www.jitterbugdirect.com
https://www.consumercellular.com

Some of their plans offer only calls, no SMS capability. So not only will you not see notifications, people actually won't be able to text you.

Permanently? You can call your phone company and tell them to turn off text messages.

You basically have two responses when you send a text message: no response (successful receipt) or some variant of "incorrect number" (unsuccessful receipt).

So if you want her to know you didn't read her message...the alternative makes it look like you blocked her.

It's like mailing a letter. You either get no response and assume it went through or it gets returned to sender.

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

There is surprisingly little overlap between the target market for high-end smartphones and people who don't want to use modern technology?

Turn on Airplane mode or Do Not Disturb, if you have iOS 8.

A long way to make a point.

It takes two layers of Tinfoil to block a cellphone signal.

I have tried this, and it works spectacularly.

Two layers of Tinfoil.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm a grouchy old man-- I want to NOT KNOW someone ever texted me....

But thanks to all for a lot of good ideas. My newest idea: Get some cheap land in Extreme NorCal. As Global Warming progresses, it will become like the Califronia coast climate, hardly ever going under freezing. No Cell phone reception in the areas I can afford.

I APPALLED all these NYMPHOMANIAC Filipinas will not LEAVE ME ALONE. I Need a SAFE SPACE so I won't be TRIGGERED!!!!!!

An Android dual-SIM phone has the SIM Management function. You can use the Settings menu to turn either phone number on or off.

By turning off the SIM, it prevents incoming calls and texts. However, you would still receive Wi-Fi type notifications (e-mail etc). That's more useful than airplane mode for the scenario you had in mind.
