I'm going to watch this video, but I always felt like his fitness videos were just a shameless cash grab for his supplements shop. He was constantly talking about being the first bodybuilder to have 22 in arms, but he kept talking about being 100% natural. But he was lifting in the Steroids era!

21 inch arms, to be accurate.

He wasn't lifting in the steroid era at all, actually. He was injured at 21, and if he's currently 82 (I think he's 82), his bodybuilding career ended in 1954/55. Ziegler didn't figure out how to create a form of injectable testosterone that actually worked until 1958/59 (oral tablets were available before then, but the dosage was too low to have any effect). He tried to use it on some of the York guys (Grimek had retired, but tried it out), with mixed effects. Jim Park claimed that the injections made him incredibly horny.

Essentially, steroids didn't really take hold until the 60s and later, largely because they didn't exist in the West until then. It's believed that the Soviets were using them in the mid 50s, but before then, it's tough to tell.
