When he was in a bad hood, he used the "shirt off move" to avoid getting jacked.

Here is my tip when caught in the hood:

Go find a liquor store and buy a bottle of beer. Preferably a 32 oz.

Pour out some on the curb for the dead homies.

Roll with the 32oz. This does three things:

1. You look like you are down, because you are boozing in the hood.
2. The booze calms your nerves
3. You have a instant weapon for sticky events.

A couple of other things I do:

If it is a warm environ, I will strip down to the wifebeater, kind of a variation on Roosh's "shirt off move".

If it is a cold environ, thrown on a skully cap and pull it low.

One more thing:

I try not to smoke cigarettes, as they give a hood an opportunity to "open" you. Kind of the opposite of The Greatest Opener of All Time /thread-4748.html

Although I don't always follow this advice as smoking can make you look like someone not to trifle with.

Def dont appear frightful and scared.

Gotta walk with a swag of confidence.

I look ppl dead in the eyes and give them a nod when passing.

Shirt off / white beater is good advice. The harder you look the better.

I walked through the centro in Rio in the middle of the night to where I was staying in Santa Taresa and I took off my shirt. When I was also walking around late at night in SP I would roll with a beer bottle to get my buzz on and have a weapon at hand.

Basically if you are aware of your surroundings and don't look scared you lower your chances of getting run up on. Thugs go for easy marks. A girl I was dating that lived in Vila Mariana(decent area of SP) got robbed at gun point for her car and purse in front of her apartment. She's a girl(makes her an easier target) and she probably wasn't paying attention to the people around her.

I walked around Rio looking like a straight GRINGO at night my whole time there! Cant BELIEVE I didnt get mugged. Im afraid on my next visit to SA my luck is gonna run out.... haha

Smartest thing you can do is get the F*$k out the hood.

You can try all those decorations and tactics you want, but you still not gonna get a pass cause you have on a wife beater, or a 40oz (who the f*$k still drinks 40's anyway) and smoking.

Locals know you out of bounds (not from there), so best thing to do is keep it moving.

Faking will get you FUBAR faster than anything. Just be your self and relax, don't try and fit in cause you can't.

This sounds like one of those womens self defense course skits.

Actually if you did all that BS in a detroit hood, you would be attracting more attention to yourself as a HUGE target.

Like I said relax be you, and act like you been there before not like you belong there.

I may step on a few toes here but we have to be aware of who we are when we travel and the impression we have on people.

The international impression of gringos is that they have money. Thugs look for opportunities. There is no point robbing a cat and going through an extremely vicious tooth and claw fight to find out the guy is carrying a few fcuking pesos. That is stupid.

So when abroad, gringos have the most to fear. On the flipside, western countries frown heavily on their gringos being robbed and bodied so if a gringo is reported missing, there has a potential for SERIOUS national repercussions.

Embassy authorities can send out a series of troops to let the foreign country know who runs shyt!

Now, if you are non-gringo, people generally think you are broke. Again, when I am abroad, I will quote that I am from a broke third world country. Now again, I apologise if I am offensive but I might say that I was born in one of the poorer African countries or Haiti and recently moved to NA in the last three years.
Usually, muthafukas back off like the plague when they hear that shyt as they know cats from those particular countries are even more hard up than they are.

In terms of from a distance, I might wear a tight t-shirt or a wife beater. Having a deez (diesel) body is UNIVERSAL in attracting females (triggers off the protection instinct) and in deterring males (triggers off the ass whupping potential instinct).
I might also walk around with a serious screw face with a look of crazed bewilderment and smile oddly at a lizard (a real one) skittering amongst the concrete blocks.

When I went off the resort in DR and deep into DR, I was worried. Although the Dominicans seem nice, they are third world cats and one never knows. Plus, I speak practically zero Spanish so I can't even run any level of mouth game out there.

However, I am a big guy and I don't wear jewellery so there is really nothing of value (I think) to snatch except some big ass threads and shoes.

However, we can only pray.

I wrote this for those circumstances when you "end up" there and you have to go a ways to get out.

That all being said, sometimes it is kind of fun to spend time in Red Light Districts, although I would say those are very distinct from the hood.

Good diss, but this is nothing like a "womans self defense course skits." (Although I have no idea what those even consist of).

Basically what I wrote is from real life experience, coupled with information from a urban survival bad*ass I know.

I agree, the best thing to do is get the F out fast. I'm 6'1 230 lbs and know how to handle myself but fighting would be the last resort. The locals know you don't belong there. Taking off your shirt will not work especially if you have on bleach white or brand new shoes, fresh creased pants or wearing cologne. I've managed to make it through the Kibera slums in Nairobi, a few hostile area in Abidjan and quite a few other places without getting robbed or killed but it wasn't because they were scared of my size it was because i didnt get pinned down into one area. Scan ahead, realize where you are and get the f out fast (before they have time to plan). if its daylight use the sun as a guiding tool out, if its dark use the moon.

Another option: wear a priest outfit.

Shirt off plus a 40 oz should do it unless you're an obvious gringo like my friend. The bottle can also double as a weapon.

Best thing is to get the hell out as fast as possible. Have a sense of purpose and look like you know where you're going.

I disagree with Dash on looking people in the eyes. There's a big difference between carrying yourself with confidence and being outright provocative. You should never make eye contact with anyone as you're passing. If they talk to you, do make direct eye contact. But looking random people in the eyes is asking for a beatdown or at best some unwanted attention.

In the slums of Naples looking someone in the eyes is considered a direct provocation. They will feel compelled to react.

I always do my legwork ahead of time so I know what areas not to get in to under any circumstances. Granted, this is not easy in a place like Rio where the favelas are everywhere.

Yeah but Centro or Santa Teresa aren't 'the hood'. Centro has a few crack heads around and ST, bad reputation that it has is quiet and safe. I walked around both areas, alone, at night many times not one bit of trouble. Having a beer large beer bottle in hand isn't a bad idea in case smething does kick off but you're hardly walking through the bronx when you're in these areas.

Surprised you guys don't mention ethnicity in this thread! It don't matter how big or how ghetto one looks if you're a gringo and find yourself in a black neighborhood (for example Anacostia in Washington, DC) you will stick out and attract unwanted attention.

Shoot, I remember the days when I used to go to Southeast DC in the 90s, homeless bums would approach me like there was no tomorrow and so would prostitutes.

Being a white fob (european) teen with blonde hair definitely attracted unwanted attention and as the crack epidemic was still sweeping most inner cities it was "visitor beware mentality". I used to go to the hood for raves and underage drinking and would come across DC cops wearing bulletproof vests and carrying shotguns in public. Thankfully I had very fast feet, cheap clothes and rarely more than a few $$$ in my pockets. That last line saved me many times!

@ Moma I think you could get a felony if the cops catch you with brass knuckles.(In the United States). I think they are illegal to be in possession of and they could consider it a concealed weapon too.

Santa Taresa isn't dangerous but there can be shady characters near the Lapa Stairs. I was talking about my walk through centro to Santa Taresa. A couple from the czech republic got robbed by some favela kids with a kitchen knife when they were walking back to the hostel at night.

These areas aren't super dangerous but you should be aware of your surroundings if you are walking through the centro in Rio or Sao Paulo late at night. Also I believe the people who get robbed either just had shitty luck or they are easy targets.

What has always worked for me is the "Terminator scan". You look at everyone as you're walking with a neutral expression on your face, and acknowledge that you see them, but you're not worried. You're not eye fukking anyone, but you're letting them know with your eyes, your demeanor, and body language that you're not food for the wolves. But at ALL TIMES KEEP IT MOVING. Your mission is to get out of Dodge. This has save my Black ass on many occaisions while deployed to places like the Philipines, Malaysia, Thailand, Panama, Puerto Rico, and other places. One never knows where one will wake up from a night of strong drink and debauchery.

Yeah I've done the same walk many times and the sketchiest part is actually Lapa, I met so many people when I ws staying in Santa Teresa who attempted to walk home from Lapa to the hostel in ST and just wandered up a side street or quiet walk way up the hill and got robbed, was mostly in the same place every time and it's a street I would not have walked up. I did take the stairs though many times and at all hours with no problem, sometimes blind drunk and alone so would have been an easy tareget. Ended up in a horrible sketchy as fuck Love Motel in Centro on the last night of Carnival, what a dump.
