I couldn't find this here. Wanted to know what you guys thought..

Now I'm all for being able to carry a gun, but some prick who is going to be walking through a neighbourhood with an openly displayed gun, as the officer claimed, which the student did not deny and in fact expounded on it, especially in this day and age with retards shooting up places for their 'emotional' issues, the kid could have at least showed his I.D.

I understand the police brutality issues, I have it in my country too, but jeez.

Why should he need to show his ID? I'd prefer dudes open carry than concealed carry too (as long as it's not brandishment). No different to men wearing a sword back in the day. There's also less odds of an open carrier shooting people up - bad guys tend to hide their weapon until they use it to commit crime.

The video is ambiguous of what the term "carry" is meaning.

The common usage of "carry" would refer to him walking down the street with his handgun in his holster. (concealed or in the open, depending on the specific state he was in)

However, it could also have been the case that he was walking down the street with an unholstered handgun and his finger was on the frame or the trigger. Unlikely, for this reason..

The former is perfectly fine (depending on the state's law) and the latter gives the police the authority to detain him because he just broke the criteria needed for probable cause. The use of a firearm should always be defensive and reactive in nature, an unholstered gun absent the actual infliction or perceived threat of unwanted force against that individual is aggressive and provocative.

I agree with the OP, why does a Law student need to walk around with a, Im guessing, loaded gun? I know it is legal to carry a holstered gun in some states, but is this common in some parts of the USA? I never saw it when I was there.

'Rights stretching'. The more people who do unnecessary things like this, merely for the sake of exercising rights, the less mainstream exercising of rights is infringed upon.

I agree, I think these people have an element of social awkwardness to them, but what they do pushes the envelope for normal people to be left alone as well

...because in the USA we aren't simply peasants doing what our lords dictate as many Europeans have chosen or allowed themselves to be. We have natural rights enumerated by the Constitution and choosing to exercise those rights doesn't allow the king's guards to detain you. Firearms are the greatest individual power equalizer and possession of them is the biggest symbol of freedom people can have.

Having spent seven years of my life in Iraq; why the fuck should I have been able to carry machine guns over there and be completely disarmed in my own city when certain parts of it have higher or similar crime rates? Why is a police officer who often has little to no education allowed to carry when the person paying their salary is not?

I don't regularly carry a gun around -- but if you want to take it away at least attempt to take it away yourself instead of cowering in the corner while you send agents paid via my taxes.

Unfortunately after doing a bit of reading, a lot of open carry states do not exempt gun owners from being detained and arrested for disorderly conduct or disturbing the peace whenever someone who gets offended/triggered by the mere sight of a firearm decides to call the police. A lot of time it looks like it depends upon the arbitrary nature of the cop on scene, unless there is a county ordinance/state law one can point to that permits how firearms are to be treated. This is a rarity, since often times the laws are written to be intentionally ambiguous so as to appease everyone.

I truly believe that allowing open carry with extremely minimal to no exceptions would make our society more antifragile, meaning less likely to experience an event where a nut with a gun is able to slaughter a bunch of innocent people. Restricting the use and carry of firearms just turns you into a target.

I'm not saying I'm against carry guns or anything, I'm not a fan of open carry, but in your country's second amendment you can. Guess I just come from a different culture. Pretty much every household in my area has at least two guns.
Just saying, in a day and age that is basically dominated by fear-injecting media and what not, carrying an open gun in a community is without a doubt going to get some people questioning and calling 'Big Brother' to come to their assistance.

Didn't explain myself properly, and no, I don't agree with the fact that the officer took away the gun, in fact it kind of puts me off thinking what would have happened if he wasn't recording the situation? It's the guy's property and he doesn't have the right to touch it. But in this day and age with regards to all the shootings, people tend to have fear when they see someone other than a police officer with a gun.

But I really have no problem with the officer asking the man to see his I.D. to ensure that he is a licensed firearm holder. It's not hard to get an illegal gun and it would not surprise me if someone was 'badass' enough to walk around with an illegal gun openly.

I believe this too, but it would require a lot of new social upbringing which frankly, would not happen. There are too many different opinions on things and a lot of people are very narrow minded and will not even sit to listen.


I also commend the student for knowing the law, but it could have gone another way and have been avoided. Your life and health are the most important things.
